Why isn't The Sun all over this?

I've been a lurker here for quite a while, but I may have missed something. I just wonder why The Sun, with its history of "exposing" "Looney left" policies, doesn't seem to be covering the mess that Labour, the Lib Dems and the Greens are making of self-ID and other anti-women ideas. Are they hanging fire until closer to a general election, or do they really not think their readership want to know about the possibility of men getting changed or whatever next to their wives, daughters, mothers etc?

Or perhaps a campaign to remind people that reproducing intimate photos that you don't have consent to use is both a copyright violation and abuse.
Not necessarily a copyright infringement. There are exceptions and any half-decent lawyer could argue for them to fall into one or more of them.

@barleybadminton

If this was only an issue within these communities it would STILL be one causing distress to a large number of people, wouldn't it? And so would need addressing.

Oh don't get me wrong in those communities it is causing distress. Most of the feminists I know are very concerned about the gender critical movement and LGBT people even more so, especially as it's increasingly leaking into attacks on gay men, gay culture and LGBT institutions. There's a real determination to stay united and resist this, you must have seen all the LGBT orgs condemning EHRC recently - that very much reflects sentiment on the ground.

In my experience barleybadminton is right on this point; the community is certainly coming together against what it perceives as divisive attacks against its own. There is widespread general distaste for what is considered GC anti-trans sentiment, and real anger on the ground, in the UK cities I am in anyway.

I think it might also be because we are all back together again and socialising in person in large numbers which wasn't possible during lockdowns and restrictions and this perhaps made online discussions appear disproportionately and superficially influential.

It's good to know when you're actually amongst everyone again that the anti-trans sentiment is not holding any sway amongst the community and it continues to be a welcoming-of-all and supportive atmosphere.

I have never posted pictures of my children on the internet at all. If I’ve ever shared them it’s been strictly limited to friends or family with full privacy settings.

The internet is not a private space.

Rheopecticfluid · 08/02/2022 22:49

So what? Just because it is possible to be abusive doesn't make being abusive okay.

Theres something else that's pretty abusive going on here.
Here's a clue. It's not showing people pictures of girls who have had their breasts removed and the a big sleeve of skin removed from their arm to fashion some sort of penis.

If it's not the pictures what do you think it might be?

barleybadminton · 08/02/2022 22:40

@PurgatoryOfPotholes

Shock I would never post personal pictures of my child's body on my facebook account, even though I have my privacy settings as tight as they can be.
So what? Just because it is possible to be abusive doesn't make being abusive okay. It is wrong to reproduce pictures of kids which were not taken in public, without their or their parents consent, to promote a political cause in public, regardless of whether the pics are intimate, or were posted on facebook, tumblr, instagram or a personal blog.

Rheopecticfluid · 08/02/2022 22:30

What if I plastered my kids photos out of the private domain of Facebook and all over Google?
Because that's where these photos are dear. Not on someone's private face book page. Not intimate and private.

barleybadminton · 08/02/2022 22:28

@ChazsBrilliantAttitude

If they are intimate photographs why are they all over Instagram and the internet. You can’t post something publicly and then claim it is intimate and private.
Err yes you can. You might post a picture of your kids on facebook, that doesn't mean you agree to someone reproducing the photo, putting it on a placard and walking round central london with it.
Rheopecticfluid · 08/02/2022 22:23

Grin

When are you going to start your campaign then? And how will you do it?

I'm starting to think you'd prefer young people not to know what the surgery looks like until after the event. After all, they might not go through with it if they saw it before. I'm sure you wouldn't want that really. Would you?

Just think, Posie might have actually saved a few kids from going through this procedure.
First do no harm.
That would be good.

Wouldn't it...

Intimate photos that are on google 😂

Please start a campaign to let these people uploading their intimate pictures know they can be seen by anyone.

There were kids present.

Perhaps they should take Laurie's advice and "look the other way".

Indeed.

I didn't take the photos dear. They're out there in the public domain, 'thanks' to surgeons like Sidhbh Gallagher. I'm sure she gained consent to plaster their surgery pictures all over the internet though. Why don't you email her and ask if she did?

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 08/02/2022 22:04

One of the differences between elective bilateral mastectomies and breast implants is that if I started a crowdfunder for my teenage daughter to receive breast implants for her 18th birthday, the people I know socially would have total and utter contempt for me. They wouldn't donate to it, and they would not think I was a good mother, doing my best for my child.

I won't say that this kind of attitude is universal across the UK - there are certainly people who wouldn't see an issue with a mother getting her daughter breast implants for her 18th.

But by and large, far fewer people would donate to such a thing than would donate to a teenager's bilateral mastectomy fund. And as long as that's the case, people will be campaigning to get mastectomies taken more seriously.

barleybadminton · 08/02/2022 22:04

@Rheopecticfluid

There were kids present.

What's your point? Do you think this surgery is too extreme for kids to see or something?

I think using intimate photos of anyone without their consent is wrong don't you?
DdraigGoch · 08/02/2022 22:04

So we can presume that this statement was a complete fabrication

No. Showing posters to educational professionals who are supposed to be safeguarding children is not the same at all as standing outside a hospital (which is what you originally implied, remember) abusing people going in for procedures.

Rheopecticfluid · 08/02/2022 22:01

I came across this the other day. All those photos out there. It's better people know the truth though. Big old trigger warning as usual for those who don't want to see images of extreme surgery on youngsters. I mean, it's not for the weak of stomach that's for sure link

barleybadminton · 08/02/2022 21:58

@ChazsBrilliantAttitude

Barley It wasn’t an event for trans children. It was an event about trans children.

From the link above.
“The Stonewall conference, which advertised standard tickets at £216 per person, was aimed at professionals across the education sector. ”

There were kids present.
barleybadminton · 08/02/2022 21:58

@ChazsBrilliantAttitude

If the images were available on google then they were in the public domain. Google isn’t searching a private space Confused
There is no such thing as in the public domain unless it is accompanied by a Creative Commons licence which explicitly permits public distribution without consent.

Just because someone might have published something on a personal blog it doesn't mean they consent to it being put on a placard and displayed in central London.

Rheopecticfluid · 08/02/2022 21:56

Did the subjects of those photos consent for such intimate and personal photographs to be displayed in public? (the answer is no btw, the images were just ripped off google)

It's not private if it's all over Google is it. After all, gender surgeon Sidhbh 'yeet the teet' Gallagher advertises her 'work' all over Google and tik tok of all places. I mean tik tok, that's not good is it, pushing surgery to kids hidden from parents. Nasty nasty stuff. I'd put a trigger warning on that as well if anyone is tempted to search Sidhbh Gallagher on Tik Tock. It's pretty grim viewing. That's being pushed at our kids.
