She’s got a point, the pun in the title is very good. But otherwise Lavery is saying the quiet part out loud.

Allmywhat It sounds like a curse, like when you buy someone's wart off them

That sentence is just fucking brilliant. Lavery should be taking lessons from you!

allmywhat · 10/02/2022 00:43

The whole book feels to some extent like procrastination, like multi-tab browsing.

Grace Laveryself on the book, from that Q&A link.

It's not like I was going to buy it anyway but I genuinely can't think of a worse line to sell it. Like I need Lavery's procrastination and browser tabs to add to my own. It sounds like a curse, like when you buy someone's wart off them. Who could possibly want this?

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 10/02/2022 00:21

Shon Faye got a whopping advance too. For reasons which remain unclear.

Their writing challenge appears to be "having something interesting to say" when their genre is "me, me, me, MEEE MEEEE MEEEEEEE"

DomesticatedZombie · 09/02/2022 22:25

@TheCurrywurstPrion

Lavery was apparently paid a huge advance

From The Lies They Tell review.

Wish the publishing industry would stop wasting the limited money they have for advances on talentless nobodies, whose main schtick ( apart from metaphorically shoving their penis down the reader’s throat) lies in being unremittingly vile because their only chance at getting any kind of conversation about their work is by shock or causing outrage, rather than by demonstrating any writing skill, or having something interesting to say.

Honest to god, this is why publishing is on its arse. Constantly underestimating, patronising and lowest-common-denominatoring readers DOES NOT WORK.

Yes, outrage merchants can cause a shitstorm in a Twittercup. But how many people are actually going to be moved to buy & read a whole book's worth? It's clearly going to be self-indulgent & insight-free. You can read all of this type of navel gazing on various blogs, why on earth would anyone pay for it? It works (briefly) to foment outrage on Twitter, but when there's nobody there to bounce off, it falls flat. And lies there twitching for far too long.

Respect your readers, offer them genuine ideas, don't tiptoe about on wokeshells and mistake pedestrian shock-schlock for a book that is actually earth-shattering. Will be interesting to see if this earns out.

Quite. Or that they had accidentally deleted it.

BettyFilous · 09/02/2022 20:09

And Lavery wrote it all on their phone.

If only it had stayed there…

Gosports · 09/02/2022 20:05

Oh it turns out that us silly people have taken it all too seriously! It was supposed to be tongue-in-cheek. Doh! And Lavery wrote it all on their phone. So that’s nice.

Why is this person being published?
What utter tripe.
What a nasty abusive and non-shocking idiot. None of what he writes is very «edgy».
Has he not read the other books of the guy what wrote American Psycho - or come to think of it he has and it is almost plagiarism.

The miscarriage bit IS sickening though. And his comment to Ditum afterwards shows his stunted intellect.

«I am not mad. I am just disappointed»

SamphiretheStickerist · 09/02/2022 17:00

@Helleofabore

You mean woman by Lavery's definition Samphire. I think that is a key argument.
Oh, erm! I seem to have lost the plot of who is male, female, wife, husband etc. Far too complicated, and nasty, for poor little old me Smile
vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 09/02/2022 16:18

I expected there would be a need for professional behaviour for lecturer's so I had a quick look at where Grace's uni is.

This is in Grace's bio. My bold.
"My work in trans feminist studies is likewise focused on the belief that transition works; that it is truly possible to change sex. This belief may be as embarrassing..."*

Aye. Right.

Another review/summary of Lavery's book:

the-lies-they-tell.org/2022/02/08/review-of-grace-laverys-book/

Read with caution, it features a description (from the book) of what I would consider abuse, among the grossness.

Jesus wept, that’s horrific!

M0RVEN · 09/02/2022 15:21

It’s interesting how the most outrageous/ confusing / new / boundary breaking behaviour all comes back to one thing - misogyny. XY people getting off on abusing XX people and getting off even more on the public attention it brings them.

I’m talking in general about some XY people as NAXYPALT of course. And not about anyone in particular.

I also find it interesting that the woke self identified “intellectuals” who applaud this behaviour would be appalled at similar abuse of Black or Jewish people.

Kick a cat and people all over the world call for you to be sacked. Rape / abuse a woman and you get tenure.

(Not defending the abuse of animals BTW) .

SamphiretheStickerist · 09/02/2022 15:21

Holy shit.. I googled those pictures. Dear god! Why on Earth does that poor woman stay?

Helleofabore · 09/02/2022 15:09

There is a photo around of Lavery doing what is described and I found it very disturbing.

Yes. It is the very public humiliation of their spouse that is supposed to be someone they love that is such a huge red flag. Obviously the public humiliation is part of the attraction. But the fact that this has been lauded and approved and people hit the 'like' button is simply mind blowing.

Yes, that was why I said I was worried about Lavery's husband. Given that Lavery thinks that being a woman is about being sexually passive, Lavery's obsession with Lavery's penis and Lavery's behaviour towards their husband seems very male and exactly the opposite of what they say. There is a photo around of Lavery doing what is described and I found it very disturbing.

And yes, this individual has tenure at Berkeley, meaning they are very secure. The academy does seem to reward outrageousness. If Lavery was on a fixed-term contract things might be very different.

Gosports · 09/02/2022 12:59

How, HOW, has this awful person been given a post at one of the most prestigious universities in the world? I’m absolutely gobsmacked after reading that review.

Helleofabore · 09/02/2022 12:54

Genesis

I couldn't read that review past the recounting of the abuse of the partner. I mean, Lavery posted photos of this. Along with the proud bite marks on Daniel's cheeks.

I mean there is a term for Lavery's type of 'love' but I don't want to have my post deleted.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 09/02/2022 12:09

Well, that was a journey.

Nice to also find out in an aside that Stryker can't even google before writing a review

Susan Stryker’s review goes ‘I met Grace when she was still an egg (trans talk for folx who don’t know yet that they’re trans) and think hers is perhaps the most spectacular, fully formed hatching since Minerva sprang from the head of Zeus,’ which neatly sums up how much sense the book makes overall (i.e. no sense).

And these people are granted the final say over policies affecting the lives of millions of women and children.

DomesticatedZombie · 09/02/2022 11:42

Ah, thank you! I got 'Save Human Life'.

Pluvia · 09/02/2022 11:40

Sorry, that should have been Grace's husband. Who is, of course, female. Despite testosterone, visibly and clearly female. While Grace is clearly and visibly male. There's a bit of my brain that refuses to lie about it and just says what it sees. It'll get me shot one of these days.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 09/02/2022 11:35

DomesticatedZombie · 09/02/2022 11:35

SHL? I googled but am getting several potential acronyms ...
