Quite a balanced article, I think. Doesn’t Metro normally steer clear of this type of topic too?

Not many comments so far, but as yet, they’re all Team Joe.

Thread from last year about the preposterous Hollyoaks storyline with Annie Wallace's character being attacked by women in prison ( it's implied they are GC).

SamphiretheStickerist · 01/02/2022 08:29

Oh, it was balanced all right. Look at it again. A HUGE amount of self serving drivel from one side and , in the absence of Joe's Twitter feed, a bold, red list of the insane shit Annie is referring to as 'bad things'.

A quick read of the article gives you:

Wah! Wah! Wah! WTAF?!?!?! Wah! Wah! Wah!

And when I was a small kid I must have played out with Stephen and sister Clare, knock down ginger and general running away games, for about 5 years, whenever we went back to grandparents and were thrown out of the house to play.

And yes, Paul McGann as Percy Topliss Smile

KittenKong · 01/02/2022 08:24

It’s also a pretty well worn tactic. Actor who isn’t well known, career isn’t exactly on fire, takes public swipes at well known successful actor to get their name on the paper.

AndAnotherNewOne · 01/02/2022 08:23

So much whining.

That person has become even more ridiculous as it goes on. Laughable.

waterlego · 01/02/2022 08:14

@Datun

Impossible to check who restarted the row on Twitter, but I’d be willing to bet that it was Wallace and that McGann did nothing more than continue to express quiet support for women’s rights.

Yes, wallace appears annoyed that Joe retweets 'without comment'. Presumably because the tweets in question aren't something wallace is confident dismantling, so wanted joe to write something himself.

Not a good look.

Yes, definitely! Sounds like Annie took umbrage at what Joe was quietly supporting, and that Joe made great efforts not to engage with Annie’s attempts to discuss it face to face. Perhaps because Joe wanted to ‘be kind’, (as we all know this is what we must do) or because he realised it would be pointless and that Annie would likely turn it into a big thing in which Annie was a victim.

So Annie is attempting to be a victim anyway, even without any evidence of bullying or wrongdoing on Joe’s part. How frustrating for Annie that Joe’s response was to simply delete his Twitter!

Also chuckling at the arrogance of Annie’s ‘None of it sank in’. He just wasn’t interested in your attempts to whip up drama, love.

Yes, Joe gave nothing for Wallace to be able to say joe said mean things because he hasn't.
He simply agrees with female rights.

Call the midwife is a feminist marvel. I watched it accidentally once and was flabbergasted by hard core feminist issues & racism were being tackled head on, on a 'cosy' Sunday night bbc show. I reallly recommend it. Good to know the connection to the McGanns. Paul McGann in the Monocled Mutineer gave rise to my first stirrings of lust.

TheCurrywurstPrion · 01/02/2022 07:29

I reread it again after my first post where I gave my first impression that it’s a balanced article. It struck me, when I read it again, that it is only balanced in that they expressed no opinion on whether Wallace’s position was reasonable or otherwise. They presented the arguments made and allowed the reader to draw their own conclusions.

The lack of self-reflection is fascinating. My guess, from what IS said, is that McGann was quietly supporting women, and Wallace chose to raise it. McGann chose not to make an issue of the request, but continued to hold and express his views (as is obviously his right).

So quietly retweeting women’s rights activists, without in any way directing it at Wallace, or drawing it to Wallace’s attention, was sufficient grounds for Wallace to push him to stop doing so.

When McGann, without fanfare, continued, Wallace (presumably realising that any official complaint would be dismissed for obvious reasons) stopped commenting directly to McGann. And rather than moving on (as most normal people would, over a political difference with colleagues) Wallace frames that as “calming the waters”. If the waters required calming, it was entirely due to waves Wallace had created.

Impossible to check who restarted the row on Twitter, but I’d be willing to bet that it was Wallace and that McGann did nothing more than continue to express quiet support for women’s rights.

So this is not so much balanced reporting, as giving someone enough rope to hang themselves. I hope the openness to do so continues.

I can't find the comment under the article, when I click the speech bubble it just takes me down the page to a loads of links to other stories?

SpikeySmooth · 01/02/2022 07:05

My husband used to ve Joe's postie, and can concur, he's a good, friendly bloke. When he's stressed out he polishes his car, so it must be gleaming right now.

Annie is very entitled.

NancyDrawed · 01/02/2022 06:51

This comment below the article nails it:

"I told you to stop agreeing with people I disagree with. But you didn't cave in to my bullying, and that makes me the victim."

Datun · 01/02/2022 06:47

It's telling how Annie has no idea that they come across as an entitled bully who Joe should defer to. Zero self awareness.

Grasping · 01/02/2022 06:43

@CompleteGinasaur

Just looked them up, they're all still very much alive. Bit of a dynasty, actually. Paul was once a Doctor Who and Stephen's been in Call The Midwife since it started. Probably not a good choice of victim for a bully, you don't get much better connected unless you're a Redgrave, I think!
Stephens wife, Heidi Thomas, writes Call The Midwife
Whatsnewpussyhat · 01/02/2022 01:05

All the usual emotional blackmail.

Supporting women is 'rolling back trans rights'?
What rights are those then?
As opposed to men demanding the removal of the existing female legal protections for their own benefit, because THAT is rolling back women's rights. The ones they pretend we don't have, need or deserve.

Joe can see through the bullshit. Good on him.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 31/01/2022 23:40

He's a good guy, he has retweeted lots of feminist stuff, he really gets it. He used to follow me. Sad that he's had to leave because of someone's attention seeking and crybullying behaviour but I don't blame him.

1stWorldProblems · 31/01/2022 23:33

There are indeed 4 McGanns - Joe, Mark, Steve (currently in Call The Midwife) & Paul. Brother, not twins or triplets or quads. Met all of them apart from Paul as a spotty, specy teenage fan & they were all lovely - polite & considerate and coped so nicely with my stumbling attempts at adulthood. From the article, Joe seems to have merely disagreed with Wallace - surely that's allowed as adults / humans? This sort of thing is why one of our house rules is "Never join Twitter" (along with no naked photos, never type what you couldn't say out loud & only take organic drugs) - no matter how good intentions / desire for debate, it's just not worth it.

PaddleBoardingMomma · 31/01/2022 23:27

Entirely off topic... but until today I've spent my entire life thinking all the mcgann brothers were one person / actor 🤣 there's 4! You live and learn...

donquixotedelamancha · 31/01/2022 23:27

The worst thing about her tweets is that she make it sounds like he was bullying her at work. Someone questioned her and she was clear that wasn't the case but if you didn't read all the comments, you would definitely come away thinking that he had been unpleasant to her.

Indeed. It seems like his 'bullying' was that he supports women's rights, she told him not to but he carried on anyway. Bastard.

CompleteGinasaur · 31/01/2022 23:22

FOJN · 31/01/2022 23:21

A difference of opinion seems to be his only crime and Annie has signalled to the mob, no wonder he's deleted his Twitter account. Annie may claim there was no bullying, Jo might take a different view. It's very unpleasant behaviour.

Yes I thought Annie admitted in a tweet they seldom even had scenes together. It's absolute nonsense.
Enough4me · 31/01/2022 23:18

Dear MN, my toddler tantrum demands their own way, is rude and bullies others when they don't get their own way, not good at keeping friends and the worst thing...he loves lying.
The advice would be to set clear boundaries and he will improve, yet here we have an adult who is doing this and should have grown out of it decades ago.

Some men shouldn't be humoured and have lots of growing up to do.

madisonbridges · 31/01/2022 23:14

I think there were actually four of them - Mark and Stephen as well!

Is one dead? Yes, Mark McGann looks the same. Were they triplets?! That's amazing.

CompleteGinasaur · 31/01/2022 23:11

Wallace may have ended up shooting herself in her size 12s here; as we've noticed the tone of the press coverage is nowhere near as uncritical as it used to be and a lot of the people who watch Hollyoaks and follow related media stories will be getting much less sycophantic press coverage than used to be the norm. Little chinks of sunlight..
