metro.co.uk/2022/01/30/joe-mcgann-leaves-twitter-after-trans-row-with-co-star-annie-wallace-16014900/

Quite a balanced article, I think. Doesn’t Metro normally steer clear of this type of topic too?

Not many comments so far, but as yet, they’re all Team Joe.

@DonnieDark

I can't find the comment under the article, when I click the speech bubble it just takes me down the page to a loads of links to other stories?
The comments are quite a way down, but worth finding as they are very supportive of Joe in a reasonable and rational way, no emotion, no drama, just common sense.
LondonWolf · 03/02/2022 14:12

I was pissed off to see this. I like JM, he's liked a couple of my tweets and seems like a lovely bloke.

As for AI really hope their career is over now. Who's going to want to employ such a trouble maker as this? They'll steer well clear if they've got any sense.

RoaringtoLangClegintheDark · 01/02/2022 23:44

What an absolute narcissist Wallace comes across as.

BootsAndRoots · 01/02/2022 23:37

@KittenKong

Metro steers right at such topics and is rarely balanced.
Absolutely, one of their regular columnists works for a TRA organisation, argues that violence against people who disagree is justified (and calls them all far-right extremists).

Moderation of Metro comments is very forceful around the subject too.

Particularly, donquixotedelamancha, were they to let slip, that they had held off on this public attack until said former colleague’s marriage breakdown (something that happened before lockdown 1 in 2020, no less) was being dragged through the gutter press.

That’s not just kicking someone who’s down; it’s booting the bloke right in his balls with steel toecapped footwear-of-choice on.

Annie has now shown a level of emotional fragility (this thread to the time of her tweet being considered by her to be “doing a real number on” her) that demonstrates she has a very real need to develop some resilience rather than expect others to bend to her. If anything, being a women generally means doing a lot of the bending, even if it’s just to keep your cats happy.

Also: trans people have the right to express that certain people, places & situations are making them uncomfortable; & if they are actually being bullied or harassed in any way, to stand up to & speak out against the person[s] responsible. But on the same terms as everyone else, which include being told [in officialese] that you’re just being wet & need to betake yourself to one of this nation’s many fine purveyors of grips & clues & avail yourself of their services. Potentially making a purchase next time a door-to-door shame salesman knocks, too... You can’t try to get someone fired because they Wrongthink; if you commit criminal damage it is, er, a crime; don’t use smoke bombs at Grenfell; don’t draw obscene graffiti; don’t make death threats (or rape threats, or threaten any other kind of violence)… Please note I’m NOT saying Annie has done anything on that last list, it is a more general comment on a pattern of problematic behaviour that hers is linked to.

Even now I am still slightly staggered that so many people are apparently untroubled by the cognitive dissonance of “I have the right to dictate what others discuss & with whom they associate + these books are wrong & shouldn’t be read/this line of research is forbidden/academics who advocate for ideas I do not like deserve to live in fear” vs “I’m an anti-fascist!” Hmm

Crybully, Crybully, look at meee...

donquixotedelamancha · 01/02/2022 20:18

Gosh, a thread with 57 posts, of which at least 10 are discussing the merits of the McGann brothers and/or call the midwife is "doing a number"

In fairness, a quick Google suggests this is the most famous she's ever been.

donquixotedelamancha · 01/02/2022 20:17

We "did a real number" on Annie this week, apparently.

Annie thinks she's being criticised because she's trans but anyone on MN who posted that they publicly told off a former colleague with MH issues because he retweeted things she doesn't agree with would get bloody short shrift on here.

You being a dick is nothing to do with you being trans, Annie.

Let's hope no one offers a grip or a biscuit. Thoughts and prayers.

Annie Wallace uses a terfblocker as I'm blocked and I've never heard of Wallace until this thread.

All woman until there are women expressing unpleasant truths

KittenKong · 01/02/2022 16:18

No self awareness whatsoever. Hopefully people are looking and actually seeing now.

BraveBananaBadge · 01/02/2022 16:17

MN is trending on Twitter because we're all awful after the webchat, and this was a doozy among vast swathes of wilful misunderstandings.

@JustcameoutGC

Call the midwife is a feminist marvel. I watched it accidentally once and was flabbergasted by hard core feminist issues & racism were being tackled head on, on a 'cosy' Sunday night bbc show. I reallly recommend it. Good to know the connection to the McGanns. Paul McGann in the Monocled Mutineer gave rise to my first stirrings of lust.
I have THe MM on DVD. Always a good reminder of my early teenage crush. I had a scrap book and everything! I've struggled to find anything Joe M has done wrong. Stephen M is the king of mansplaining on call the midwife. Maybe Annie would like to take the argument there...

I'm just hopping on this thread as I wanted to make sure there was a McGann Brothers/Percy Topliss reference. And there is. Good. 😁

KittenKong · 01/02/2022 11:40

Sounds like a bit of jealousy mixed in as well as attention seeking. Who would have a clue who this actor was if they hadn’t been out on teatime telly purely because of their character as a trans woman? Not that anyone can actually act on that show.

Mollyollydolly · 01/02/2022 11:32

Joe is a good guy. He follows a lot of women (including me) on twitter and has been aware of this debate for a good while. Saw him in 'Blood Brothers' a million years ago and was a bit obsessed with it. I hope he comes back to twitter. Being a bloke he's avoided any blowback up to now. Have a lot of time for him.

It came up briefly on this thread the other day:

Gumbomambo · 01/02/2022 11:21

Just no need for this to be done publicly. Don’t Hollyoaks train them how to use their Twitter accounts. Incidentally I did piss myself at call the midwife about two weeks ago when they laughingly sent a man away who wanted his cervix checked. They did point out that only women have a cervix.

Everything else is attacking him for having a difference of opinion which has been perfectly respectful.

Treating someone respectfully simply isn't enough, this is thought policing by the Twitter mob.

RedToothBrush · 01/02/2022 11:03

@CompleteGinasaur

So. He was "perfectly nice", it "was not workplace bullying", but simply "differences of opinion on trans issues". So where is the need, what is the justification for this retrospective chucking of toys out of the pram? Didn't we get rid of "No Debate"?
This is where it should start and end.

Everything else is attacking him for having a difference of opinion which has been perfectly respectful.

NitroNine · 01/02/2022 10:44

Yes, odd that someone with a history of depression so severe he was misdiagnosed with schizophrenia when most unwell might decide to disengage completely from a platform that will allow users to give him a kicking.

Stephen McGann is either in line with the TWAW & TMAM view or pretending to be (presumably as politically expedient for someone working at the BBC). If he is A True Believer* this article could cause fraternal friction, if not an actual falling-out.

The entire article really is “you were RTing people who were defending women’s rights; I made up what your QTs might have been (& they were DREADFUL, HOW DARE IMAGINARY YOU SAY THOSE THINGS?!); I took it upon myself to tell you stop it; & not only did you continue while we worked together, YOU’RE STILL AT IT NOW!” Obviously the “distress” it caused Annie was so severe that she forgot she could unfollow Joe. Or indeed block the accounts he was RTing, having first reported them (obviously I don’t think Maya et al should be reported, but if you genuinely consider an account is producing hateful content that is distressing to you, it’s on you to report & block).

The article certainly insinuated that there was workplace bullying: I hope Annie didn’t only confirm to her fans that this wasn’t the case because she knows other cast members would support Joe & that the absence of any report would look bad.

I note she’s hitched her story to “the HO racism accusations”, too. People who do this stuff need to stop trying to pretend they are anything other than straight-up racist equating black women & trans women. None of this “oh, but it’s a pattern of discrimination”. You don’t know that; & when you’re only ever tying those two concerns together (with the occasional grab at the sex-based oppression experienced by women to try to bolster the idea TWAW) We. See. You. Angry

  • though someone who has an MSc in Science Communication as well as playing a GP specialising in obstetrics really ought to at least have some serious questions about that Hmm
BraveBananaBadge · 01/02/2022 09:04

@KittenKong

It’s also a pretty well worn tactic. Actor who isn’t well known, career isn’t exactly on fire, takes public swipes at well known successful actor to get their name on the paper.
Yes the timing is suspect as I mentioned on the thread in chat. He's already been in the tabloids this week after the Mail put a nasty and untrue spin on a story about his private life. More eyes on him than usual. I wonder if Annie would have tried to go in for the kill otherwise. It seems rather opportunistic.

McGann has always shown class standing up for women's rights. I have previously wondered what opened his eyes to the issue.

teawamutu · 01/02/2022 08:31

@NancyDrawed

This comment below the article nails it:

"I told you to stop agreeing with people I disagree with. But you didn't cave in to my bullying, and that makes me the victim."

Gorgeous. You love to see it.
