I just saw this response on twitter.

In the piece she thinks only pregnant women experience domestic violence. As ever, the transphobia is sickening. You will lose this fight against human rights.

She was responding to the Times article about Nicola Murray, the founder of a specialist charity for women who have experienced pregnancy loss as a result of domestic violence, being visited by police officers.

I'm not linking directly to the tweet because she's received plenty of responses already, and I am certain every single one is pointless. If you can read about a charity being founded to support women who've miscarried because of violence and conclude the founder "thinks only pregnant women experience domestic violence", what is there to say to you?

I've always believed in the power of rational conversation. Clearly I was deluded.

extract
The founder of a charity supporting women who have suffered domestic violence has been interviewed by police after she was reported for hate crime after stressing its female-only services.

Nicola Murray was left “shocked and panicky” when detectives arrived at her door after an online announcement by Brodie’s Trust that it would no longer refer women to Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre (ERCC).

Talking to the officers, Murray, from Stanley, near Perth, was taken aback when she said they told her: “We need to speak to you to ascertain what your thinking was behind making your statement.”

Murray, 43, founded Brodie’s Trust in 2018 to support women from all over the world “who’ve suffered pregnancy loss through domestic violence or forced termination” by directing victims tolocal services for help.

She and a colleague determined its revised policy towards ERCC following statements by Mridul Wadhwa, the trans womanappointed its CEO last year, who claimed “bigoted” victims of sexual violence should expect to be “challenged on their prejudices”.

So what they are saying is, that a woman who has lost their baby due to domestic violence, can’t even have this to themselves cos know “men” and non binary people get pregnant too.

What a load of fucking bullshit

RoyalCorgi · 31/01/2022 09:10

JKR is a good example of this. So, the hard of thinking have been told her tweets are transphobic, and they’re now parroting that all over the internet - yet can’t provide a single example in her own words of what she said that was transphobic. The TRA strategy worked, and so they’ll deploy it again and again.

Yes. A particular low point was when JKR said she had ignored child porn posted on her Twitter thread, to show that she didn't rise to the bait despite extreme provocation. And they used that against her to pretend that she didn't care about child porn.

Every argument they make is in bad faith. You know why? Because they know that the position they hold is indefensible. There are no good faith arguments to support a position that is entirely irrational.

BreatheAndFocus · 31/01/2022 09:02

I agree it’s deliberate trolling. They no doubt understood the sentence about men, but purposely twisted it in order to make their tweet. It’s a form of propaganda. If you can twist or misrepresent a reasonable statement, then you’re well on the way to making sure anything that person says in future is judged through the same false lens.

This is why people are re-writing history - the lies become ‘fact’. “Oceania had always been at war with Eastasia”.

There’s a huge audience of people who aren’t very bright, sitting ready to lap up these lies and spread them far and wide. Useful idiots. That’s why the TRAs say obviously false things. It doesn’t matter that we know they’re false, the vacuous virtue-signallers will take them as fact and distribute them far and wide.

@Voice0fReason

There is no point in trying to reason when they are doing it deliberately.
This. They know most people on their side won't bother to read something from The Enemy.
NonnyMouse1337 · 31/01/2022 07:52

I've always believed in the power of rational conversation. Clearly I was deluded.

You can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into.
This is an ideological / faith based viewpoint plus deliberate trolling / goading by someone who should know better but prefers to follow the herd they associate with.

ArabellaScott · 31/01/2022 07:02

It's a good question, Pots. I suppose it's partly an emotional knee jerk response born out of tribalism and simplistic, binary thinking ('there are two sides and if someone disagrees with me they are bad').

People like this dehumanise anyone who disagrees. And so are happy to attack someone whose work is helping women who must be in one of the most difficult and vulnerable positions possible.

So desperate to scrabble for a point to 'win' they beclown themselves and reveal the shallowness of their thinking along with a dizzying lack of empathy and humanity. It's a childish level of discourse.

Which would all be so much noise, if it weren't for the fact that the police in Scotland now apparently take instruction from people like this. That's the real issue.

Nobody would need to pay any attention to malicious and vapid 'activism' like this if it hadn't somehow become sanctioned and upheld and supported by government policy, NHS guidelines, etc, and enforced by police.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 31/01/2022 01:04

Aha! IchBinEinCurrywurster, now you've highlighted it, I can nearly see her angle. Trying to understand her train of thought feels a bit like trying to do a Rubix cube in the dark, but I think you're right.

I read that sentence as, males can't ever experience the combination of "miscarriage and domestic violence" and it didn't occur to me you could read it another way. But as the article clearly explains that the charity aims to support those who have experienced pregnancy loss due to domestic violence, I think you'd have to have an axe to grind to read it another way. I'm veering towards dishonesty now, rather than inability to read... Heartless. This is not scraping the barrel, this is digging through the ground beneath to the basement. Why do people do this and yet consider themselves the good guys?

IchBinEinCurrywurster · 31/01/2022 00:34

I'm guessing the ridiculous tweet is due to this quote from Nicola in the article: 'Men cannot get pregnant, therefore they cannot experience a miscarriage and domestic violence' which is a bit ambiguous. It could be construed as someone saying men can't suffer domestic violence. Whereas she clearly meant they can't suffer a miscarriage as a result of DV.

But I'm sure the tweeter knows this and is just desperately clutching for a(nother) stick to beat her with. Horrible

Redshoeblueshoe · 30/01/2022 23:47

It does cover the essentials.
I said something similar to DH about this earlier this evening. Except my language was rather colourful !

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 30/01/2022 23:38

@ErrolTheDragon

I see that idiotic tweet was replying to *@VictoriaPeckham* which (for reasons which elude me, I'd like to know why) is Janice Turner's handle. Janice is good at writing clearly, has she explained to this person their logic fail yet? (And maybe their 'halfway decent human' fail too...)

She went for short and to the point

Janice: Your lack of empathy for women battered into miscarriage & coerced into abortion, is frankly chilling.

I think that covers all the essentials.

This type of thing makes my brain hurt with the absurdity of it all. Well done to Fair Play For Women.

Nicola is a champ. I hope she gets a proper response from EHRC.

nauticant · 30/01/2022 22:58

It's not about education or the ability to reason, it's how about many people saw Trump and his alternative facts, really liked what they were seeing, and then adopted that approach. Even though the progressives among them would claim to hate Trump and everything he stands for.

Boris Johnson has adopted the Trump approach and it's worked out well for him. So far.

The ease with which some people are able to wallpaper over material reality with alternative facts/narratives/science/whatever, to me represents a monstrous narcissism.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 30/01/2022 22:57

An editor?!

I'm flabbergasted. That makes no sense. Liz's job is reading! So that makes me think it was less illiteracy and more disingenuousness; except why would an editor risk looking illiterate on their professional account to win a twitter argument? How can that be worth it?

I honestly think she really can't read very well.

@PurgatoryOfPotholes

I just don't understand what has gone wrong with British education to produce someone with such limited reading comprehension. Liz has been failed, badly.
I had a look at its twitter bio said account claims to be an editor. If so It's author's display of professional incompetence is (to say the least) stunning.

Not a failure of education
But it looks like the tweet option was to formulate a false narrative to be abusive and rant educate us all about the "rights of penis owners"

SunnyDelite · 30/01/2022 21:39

Daughter full-on TWAW. No reasoning with her (because her tribe). It's so depressing that she won't even let me mention it any more, just pretend nothing's going on. So frustrating, she was such an intelligent girl (woman) but now seems to have lost all power of critical thinking... :( .

Its just horrendous

The police are a fucking embarrassment

Redshoeblueshoe · 30/01/2022 20:51

FFS doesn't even begin to cover it.

FOJN · 30/01/2022 20:48

It's not all about meeeeeee. FFS

Similar to the NB's or TM's who think women prioritised for breast cancer treatment have privilege because they have to wait for "top surgery".

foxgoosefinch · 30/01/2022 20:43

These people always have such poor reading comprehension and basic reasoning.

Our regular ones on this board too, who are also fond of disingenuously misreading any statement they can. It’s impossible to tell if it’s genuinely missing the point, or if it’s calculated stupidity, or just that they think it’s some kind of rhetorical manoeuvre or flourish that genuinely convinces other people, or what. (If they are doing it deliberately, they ought to give up because it just makes them look exceedingly thick.)

You cannot have an argument with stupid or mendacious or both.

bishophaha · 30/01/2022 20:37

It's all they have.
Seriously, it's all they have.
