I did a search of The Times website and I can confirm that Sarah has accomplished the first inclusion of the word “fingerbanging” in the history of The Times 😆.

WarriorN · 28/01/2022 10:50

And this:

from a section dismissing the idea of any substantial evolved differences between men and women): “Crisp slices of genuine scientific inquiry are battered in the heavy crumb of convenient fictions, deep fried in received wisdom and smothered in the special sauce of popular prejudice so they’re easier to swallow for those who already have their mouths full of comforting lies.” (Perhaps this is also about a currywurst.)

Cruet-set pot calling the IKEA cast iron kettle etc

Sarah Ditum’s review. Worth it for this paragraph:

Because whatever you’re doing, it’s important to remember that Penny is doing something much more exciting and avant-garde. Do you think that you, in your unenlightened state, have ever had good sex? Penny would like to inform you that it can hardly compare to “the thrill of the single weekend I spent in Berlin in 2018”, which I suppose could refer either to an expert fingerbanging from a stranger in a fetish club or an outstanding currywurst.

🤣🤣🤣

ArabellaScott · 28/01/2022 09:45
  • from S Ditum's Times article.
ArabellaScott · 28/01/2022 09:44

'Penny claims not to be a woman, and claims furthermore that women have no shared qualities as a group, so why identify with feminism at all?' - exactly.

Thirtytimesround · 28/01/2022 09:41

What a fabulously written article! She’s so witty!

DialSquare · 28/01/2022 09:30

I enjoyed the article too. I've no patience for people like Laurie Penny. Laurie doesn't support Trans rights, Laurie advocates for the removal of women and girls rights. And then has the audacity to write a book on feminism. As many have said on here over the years, what rights do Trans people not have?

Will be interesting to see how popular the book is though compared to Trans by Helen Joyce.

Rainbowshit · 28/01/2022 09:26

That is a brilliant article. Having read the comments I was expecting it to be nasty, but it's not.

The fucking audacity of defending the right of a sex offender to flash his semi erect penis at a 9 year old girl in a female only space. Then saying the 9 year old shouldn't have looked as it's rude. Then writing a book on feminism. 🤯🤯🤯🤯

UniversalAunt · 28/01/2022 08:24

Hurrah Suzanne Moore!
Moore please.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/01/2022 08:23

Penny needs to stop making such a cringeworthy twat of themself.

It's all Penny knows how to do. Like a pp, I think Penny is a manipulative, nasty piece of work, who lives for attention of any kind.

Clymene · 28/01/2022 08:23

Begging for likes now 🙄

I loved these few lines in sarah ditum's review:

'The biggest question left by this book, though, is: “Why?” Penny claims not to be a woman, and claims furthermore that women have no shared qualities as a group, so why identify with feminism at all?'

ScreamingMeMe · 28/01/2022 06:49

@timeisnotaline

Laurie lost me completely with that wii spa incident where she announced if your 9yo daughter is confronted with a naked penis next to them at a female spa session, shame on you for not having taught her to look politely away. not an exact quote She didn’t have the guts to revisit it either when the perpetrator was revealed to be a known sex offender. She’s no feminist, I don’t care whether she’s queer or not but I do care that she’s a handmaiden to child abusers who has the incredible cheek to call herself a feminist.
Here it is in all its disgusting glory.

Doesn't look likely: twitter.com/PennyRed/status/1486802512195821571

Stealhsquirrelnutkin · 27/01/2022 22:23

You know it has become ridiculous when lesbians like Bindel have to kowtow to a white, bourgeois, married woman in the name of what, radicalism? Give over. You cannot misgender someone if you don’t believe in the concept of gender, however suck-ass the business of publishing now is.

Give over indeed. Penny needs to stop making such a cringeworthy twat of themself. Until they does, the rest of us, who have had more than enough of pandering to the overprivileged, are going to point and laugh.

Actually, thinking about her attitude towards the WiSpa flasher, the exploitation of vulnerable women in prostitution, and her complacency about men stealing women's sports awards and rapists sharing cells in women's prisons, I'd be tempted to go full monkey. Point, laugh and fling a turd at her head!

DifficultBloodyWoman · 27/01/2022 22:17

Sneering and aggressive? I found the article highly entertaining!

ArabellaScott · 27/01/2022 22:01

@boardbored

‘ I probably differ from Bindel on pronoun use — mostly out of laziness — and will call people whatever they like to be called. “What did you do in the great pronoun war?”, my grandchildren will ask me. “I largely could not be arsed,” will be my reply. If Penny wants to be plural, plural they can be. It’s no skin off my several noses.’

Given that LP called me a clueless white feminist on Twitter this week

Hilarious projection.

allmywhat · 27/01/2022 21:54

That was great. Extremely precise about some of the ways in which Penny is irritating. And I have no sympathy at all for the flasher apologist. In fact, I’m hoping Julie Burchill joins in.

Helleofabore · 27/01/2022 20:57

@Gumbomambo

Does anyone remember LP’s classic from the WiSpa incident? Tell your daughter to stop looking at other peoples genitals. She’s bloody dangerous.
Yes. And it says a great deal about LP’s brand of feminism and just who it centres.
BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 27/01/2022 20:49

I clicked through from that to the original Julie Bindel review of they's book. This paragraph was at the bottom

In response to this review — “Penny seems blissfully unaware that any feminist activism happened prior to the #MeToo movement” — Laurie Penny’s publishers said the following: “I wanted to highlight that Laurie Penny’s pronouns are they/them (as indicated in the book and press release). Could the review be updated to reflect this, please?”

you are Laurie

SantaClawsServiette · 27/01/2022 20:02

I am not a huge fan of SM, I find she sometimes misses the point spectacularly, but I thought that was quite funny, and not only towards LP.

I suppose it may be slightly leaning toward mean, but I think complaining about being misgendered, especially with they/them pronouns, is completely ridiculous, so of course ridicule follows.

I’ve loved Suzanne Moore since she smiled at my baby on the tube ten years ago.

I love her more now.
