Male midwife facing 29 charges of misconduct,

NMC hearing started today, expected to last four days, of a senior male midwife accused of, among other things, having taken pictures of two women having caesarian sections without their permission and also filmed himself performing a sex act in a hospital toilet.
He faces 29 misconduct charges.

Will be watching this case this week.

@whatfreshheck

AuntieBumBum because my many male colleagues are lovely people and some on here are being utterly ridiculous and suggesting they have ulterior motives.
Can you read minds?

Can you see into their psyche?

Or are you basing that opinion in your observations?

You think a pedophiles friends knew he was a pedophile or did they think he was a lovely caring guy with no ulterior motives?

whatfreshheck · 26/01/2022 10:42

Also since when was it "attacking women" to point out they they are also being found abusing patients.

Also if there's only 50 male midwives then that 4% stat from earlier is incorrect. It's more like 8 %.

AuntyBumBum · 26/01/2022 10:39

@whatfreshheck

Have a look at the NMC hearings page- there are an awful lot of female nurses on there.
You have to ask why a woman would come onto the feminist boards to attack women.
MrBlobbyLivesNextDoor · 26/01/2022 10:38

Only one of 50? I had a male midwife. I was convinced he was taking photos of me when in was giving birth. I complained about it to one of the female midwives straight afterwards, who told me to escalate it. I never did that as I was exhausted and overwhelmed from the birth, and tried to convince myself that it was probably nothing. I still regret that I didn't take that further, although at the time I just couldn't. I wish she had escalated it for me.

@whatfreshheck

So is yours. Sexist much?
Who poses more risk?

Men against women?
Women against men?

Who would be safer if more guards were put in place surrounding intimate healthcare?
Females or males?

Not sexist to state facts.

AuntyBumBum · 26/01/2022 10:36

Tell you what, no medical professional should be able to treat the opposite sex. How about that?

This has already been discussed on the thread, and it's really not so outlandish as you seem to think. Dignity and peace of mind for female patients without needing to argue and fight for it. And as an indirect advantage for women, much more access to work in medicine: a medical profession made up of more than 50% women (I'm guessing that the female half of the population require on average more medical attention than men, not least because of childcare, and the fact that they take more responsibility for their own health than men.)

doublemonkey · 26/01/2022 10:36

When you consider there's only 50 male midwives in the country that's a lot of dodgy ones..

whatfreshheck · 26/01/2022 10:36

Maryandhernet- not answering my question

My husbands an ITU doc. Should he just treat men then? If he is the only consultant on call should he not treat a woman? He also works for the air ambulance. Sometimes it's an all male crew except for the pilot. Should he not treat women in labour that's gone wrong?
Your bias is showing.

Wow. The sexism on this thread. "Men shouldn't be midwives". WTF? I work with many male nurses and midwives and they are exemplary. Maybe women shouldn't be urologists then? As they deal with prostates and penises a lot of the time. Tell you what, no medical professional should be able to treat the opposite sex. How about that? Get a grip you lot.
When the statistics start showing women perpetrating as many crimes against men as men perpertrat against women, I'll agree whole heartedly that.women shouldn't have access to vulnerable men... Until then, let's focus on who poses the most risk to whom.
MaryAndHerNet · 26/01/2022 10:29

So we have 4% of male MW who behaved inappropriately.
I’m wondering what is the rate for male gynaecologists. Or fertility specialists.

That have been caught...

That's the issue here.

Take a cross sample of 10000 random men, how many of them will be perverts, law breakers, abusers of position?
It'll be a good percentage I reckon.

Men are known and have been proven to take extraordinary lengths to access their 'objects of wankery'
Training to be an police officer to abuse women.
Training in the priest good to access children.
Training as a midwife to access vulnerable women.

So let's say 10000 men, working daily, with vulnerable women with access to women's intimate areas. We'll say 90% of them will be absolutely safe, fine, trust worthy etc. But that leaves 10% If we've caught 4%, that still leaves 6% we don't know about..
600 men left out of the 10000 working without being caught.

In real terms, in real actual numbers of males working with women as described, there's likely a LOT more than 10000 of them and if only 5% of them are uncaught dodgy ones, that could be 100s upon 100s of dodgy men accessing several women every day, 5 days a week.
Maths suggests that could lead to 1000s upon 1000s of potential victims every year. But the victims don't know as the perpetrator hasn't been caught yet.

Think about the other patients of the guy in the OP. Unaware of any wrong doings, telling others how good and nice the guy seemed... Till the guy got caught..

SusannaQueen · 26/01/2022 10:28

I had a male midwife who was horrible. I didn’t want a male midwife but I was in a hospital in an area with a lot of Muslim women. The hospital team told me these women couldn’t have him and led me to believe I’d be left without care if I didn’t agree.

This is why I don't think we should have male midwives, they are taking a job away from a woman, there will always be a time where a patient has no choice in being treated by them. Every male who becomes a midwife will know that he could end up treating a woman who feels vulnerable in the presence of men, at a time when she is most vulnerable, yet the men are fine with this.

ArabellaScott · 26/01/2022 10:25

(and fwiw it's not derailing to talk about how your experiences have affected you)

ArabellaScott · 26/01/2022 10:24

Flowers Blooming and any women affected by substandard care during pregnancy and birth. It's not right. You deserve better. We deserve better. If you're still finding it upsetting some time later, it might be worth contacting a counsellor or therapist to work through the issue. Childbirth often leaves lasting trauma responses for women.

AuntyBumBum · 26/01/2022 10:23

Are you suggesting that all male OB’s are or that like any profession some people are areseholes?

An awful lot of men are like that, whichever profession they pursue.

ArabellaScott · 26/01/2022 10:23

'Your mileage may vary' - I'm saying that it probably depends and some will be misogynists and some not.

BloomingInformation · 26/01/2022 10:22

Warblerinwinter me wonder if that was about the midwife I had? Every now and again I Google him and I think I’ve come up with articles about him before.

I’m a bit teary now. Even though my birth experience was many moons ago. I found it traumatic. I didn’t feel there was anyone looking out for me. I was so frightened, so very frightened. No one cared. I might have had all the right medical procedures but no one CARED. Maybe that’s not about m v f though, so sorry to derail.

Flickflack, my male Ob/gyn was a raging misogynistic arsehole. YMMV.
