Stumbled accross this on twitter. Matt Walsh, an American political commentator is on a chat show and confronts transactivist to define a woman and tells him that he is appropriating womanhood.

Then after being told that he has 'traumatised' the activists... He provides this response!!

Wow. He says sh*t straight.... Haha!

Feels like blind spot tbh.

Yes there is Cheese. For a good proportion of this thread I and others have pointed out to you that it is what Walsh has said in this instance as being important. It doesn’t matter how right wing you or anyone else wants to categorise him. You have consistently and persistently failed to answer the questions about what he said, and are fixated on who he is. I don’t know why, and I don’t know why you are now insisting on rehashing the same tired arguments. It’s a huge blind spot for you, that you can’t see within yourself how you allow your own prejudices to block out important events and stories because all you see is identity.

CheeseMmmm · 22/01/2022 22:44

USA left is righter than our right.

Totally different ball games.

CheeseMmmm · 22/01/2022 22:43

I'm not understanding how someone with fundamental religious views, far right on political views compared to here, is being characterised as standard right, conservative (with either small or big c).

His stance is vv extreme by UK standards.

Also not sure why the idea nonono no way in same zone as those with similar views who aren't USA.

Feels like blind spot tbh.

OperationDessertStorm · 22/01/2022 20:37

You’ve nailed it there OP. Somehow now Right wing and Left wing are binary and immutable but Sex is fluid and complicated. Identity politics to the extreme.

FOJN · 22/01/2022 19:07

See also James Lindsay - if you want to know just WTF is really happening he is the man to be listening to. Also Douglas Murray. I don't care to argue with anyone about this and won't be, but I think we are swiftly approaching the pendulum swinging back and I can only hope it doesn't swing as hard back to the right as it did to the left.

That is my worry too. There is only so long people will tolerate "the right kind of politics" being so untethered from reality, the backlash will be a reaction to this rather than the lid coming off something the left have been trying to control.

I'm left of center but also listen to many political commentators on the right, I may disagree with them on many things but they are not spewing hat in the same way the left is at he moment, I feel very alienated from many I should have lots in common with and I'm so tired of the tribalism which leads to name calling and dismissal of the views of anyone who comes from a different place on the political spectrum.

We are in dangerous territory, it's time to grow up and engage with those we might disagree with and stop behaving like children who are frightened they might get a bit of conservatism on them.

allmywhat · 22/01/2022 18:30

I just went to look at Walsh’s Twitter and saw this.

This year I will be waging an all out assault on gender ideology. We have been working on something that will make the Dr Phil episode seem tame and boring by comparison. I can’t say anything else about it but it will change the conversation. We can win this battle.

I’m not taking his bumph at face value, of course. Smile

But he seems to have a lot of reach and some influence on the right wing in the States. So it sounds like there will be a lot more sunlight shone on everything over there and it will certainly be an election issue. I am somewhat hopeful. He’s got way more reach than radfems do at least!!

LondonWolf · 22/01/2022 17:58

I like your posts @MalagaNights.

I don't consider myself conservative but I listen to Ben Shapiro every day. He talks about things that others won't and I want to know about them even if don't usually agree with his take on them.

MalagaNights · 22/01/2022 14:57

@londonWolf the trigger warning was tongue in cheek, but many on here on seem to find right wing views distressing, and can't beleive people actually have them, or are allowed to say them out loud, so I did want to prepare anyone who followed the link Grin

Personally I love the jarring experience of listening along thinking people are reasonable and agreeing with them and then they say something that makes you go WTF, and you realise there is another topic where you find their views oppositional to yours.
It really challenges your thinking.

So I enjoy the Daily Wire discussions between that group. They are clever, knowledgable & funny, but unashamedley right wing and religious and I think it's really unusual to hear those types of discussions in the UK.

MalagaNights · 22/01/2022 14:50

The American right are realising that the culture wars are a vote winner and that most people do not support this gender nonsense and they've decided to go agressive on it.
And it will work.

The right in the UK hasn't yet picked up on the winning stance of hitting back hard against this, but hopefully they will.

These threads are weird in the assumption that the left is still correct about everything execpt this, and 'we' all agree on that, and only happen to agree with the right on this issue and need to say that.

The fear that someone on twitter thinks you are RIGHT WING is hilarious.

Yeah, maybe I am a bit right wing. So's half the country, it's legal.
Calm down.

I now disgaree with the left on a lot of things, and I agree with Matt Walsh that the biggest issue here is the truth. That is bigger than women's rights as it's the basis for them, and all other rights. Once you lose the ability to state commonly held and unedrstood truths anything can be done, it's tyranny.

DrDinosaur · 22/01/2022 13:41

I loved the clip, think it is great to see anyone standing up on mainstream tv and exposing gender ideology as the complete codswallop it is. And I think he did this very effectively, undoubtedly helped by his authoritative male voice and presentation.

sacredfemina said upthread
He does sadly say that his number one priority is truth, over women's safety

I actually agree with him on this as well. Obviously I am concerned about women's rights as well, but I'm even more concerned that a political movement has somehow managed to get people to believe, or pretend they believe, in a totally unscientific delusion.
Humans are a dimorphic species, humans can't change sex, a man can't be a woman.
I don't think these are political opinions, they are simple statements of fact. I don't need to agree with everything someone thinks about other political matters to agree that truth is important.

I think the kind of purity spiral promoted by Cheese above is part of the problem. There appear to be many people who are either unable, or too afraid, to think for themselves, and instead spout what they think are the 'correct' opinions, because they hear them from the 'righthinking' people. Its the most terrifying thing I have seen in my (long) life.

sacredfeminina · 22/01/2022 12:23

What is powerful about what he says, it sadly the fact that he is male saying it. He has a loud, strong voice which holds authority and silences others meaning his point is boomed accross the room and no one can try to talk over him. its a sad fact that males do have this vocal power, but i do think it is a reality, and is why i think so many yoyng ftm transitioners (initially) feel great when they are taking testosterone - finally their voices hold the room. Also why some mtf transexuals don't reeuce testosterone, like the judge/barrister (i dont remember which he is) who is trans but says he wont change his voice because it is the tool of his job.

Someome like posie parker is as equally direct, as equally fierce as Matt, but tends to get talked over by numpty male interviewers.

So i think, fucking great go for it Matt, go around pointing out the emperor is naked, and hopefully you might change your mind about some otherstuff whilst your at it too

I find the whole polarization of political stances (left/right) really stifling. It leaves no room for nuance. It's like your either in the club our out of the club. It holds society back, as in actual fact we are all human beings with belief systems and morals over a spectrum, trying to find political representatives which we feel hold similiar beliefs. Its not the fucking harry potter sorting hat and now im Gryffindor until i die. I think im going to start a movement of non-binary politics where i will identify as a party-fluid, fluxpolitic. ''RIGHT IS LEFT'' will be the new slogan for us to waste all our fucking time scratching our heads over.

ANYWAY, jokes aside, in this instance by thinking that Matt Walsh is a 'CONSERVATIVE' like it is brandished onto his DNA, and means we then ignore everything else he says, we overlook the fact that he is human, and may well change his mind on abortion at some point, and in fact is more likely to if he starts spending more time considering women's rights. Its not like he was born being 'anti-abortion' and that that belief is immutable... Like i don't know, say his sex for example.

@MalagaNights

I'm listening to The Ben Shapiro Show | Daily Wire Backstage: WE WON on Podbean, check it out! www.podbean.com/ea/dir-5gdek-123d6517

Matt Walsh et al discuss trans issue and the Canada Conversion Therapy bill on here.

Listen 55 mins in: Andrew Klavan suggests trans and the erasure of women is linked to a modern digust of women's bodies which is often present in dystopian literature and horror films.
Which I found interesting.

Warning: don't listen if you find right wing or religious views upsetting.

I've listened to this. I don't agree with all of it but as you say from that point in - some really excellent and insightful points are made but no one will hear them because the people discussing it are "SO RIGHT WING!" Hmm

I hope the trigger warning was a joke by the way, there's nothing to get particularly steamed up about in that podcast imvho. I consider myself centre left btw.

Ziegfeld · 22/01/2022 11:37

Hard to disagree with what he’s saying.

But Dr Phil should know better, what’s all that nonsense about “sex assigned at birth”?

“What annoys us about the trans debate is having to agree with people we’d normally disagree with about other issues. But if someone says it’s snowing and you look out of the window and it’s snowing, what else can you do?”

VelvetChairGirl · 22/01/2022 09:38

excellent, they will never define what a woman is because they know all their definitions are rampantly sexist stereotypes created by men to appeal to men.

rather then claim to identify as women they may as well claim to identify as a blow up doll as that would be more accurate to the image in their heads.

IndigoToo · 22/01/2022 09:26

Re-reading this thread doesn’t make it any less bizarre. In fact, it reinforces that I wasn’t able to follow the tangential wanderings at all. What a trip that was - twice!

NotBadConsidering · 22/01/2022 09:25

@nolongersurprised

And it is good that it aired on dr Phil

He’s trying to get on The View next Grin

You’ll have to explain what The View is, some people have never heard of those multi-award winning chat shows watched by millions of people 😆😆.

I hope he does, but it’s a shame Barbara Walters doesn’t still present it. Walters is obviously extremely famous in her own right but did the now (in)famous first interview with Jazz Jennings.

turbonerd · 22/01/2022 09:07

I am just going to repeat that identity politics is a very unhealthy route to go down: it gave us D Trump as prez in the USA and most likely will do again.

It is not wise to split all things into Left or Right wing politics.
Especially not since both Left and Right in the US, and increasingly in the UK, are in reality rather right of centre (of what the rest of Europe consider Social Democracy).

It IS possibly to disagree on fundamentals, but still find middle ground on other issues. But not if every time someone opines differently to your values you just put your fingers in your ears and go LaLaLa.
Which it seems the US «left» and «right» has been doing to such an extent that we are looking at parody of political discourse. And probably the «right» started it, and it is difficult to take on anything from that side because they are extreme, but it is important to do still.

So even if Matt Walsh is a douche bag, he has valid and important points to make on this. And it is good that it aired on dr Phil.

nolongersurprised · 22/01/2022 09:07

One thread I remember from here was about Posie Parker and it went on for ages, with a few posters vilifying her for her lack of acceptable feminism and how she went on right wing platforms to get her message across.

One poster was fixated how the UK academic GC feminists didn’t like her, and asked, “What happens if all disengage from her”.

One poster answered, “Nothing much” and it’s the same here really.

If we agree with someone about this, nothing bad happens. Ideally, everyone moves towards a common goal and then continues to disagree about other stuff.

rabbitwoman · 22/01/2022 08:59

*CheeseMmmm

I have zero idea what JB or AC have to do with this thread at all.*

Because their influence and advice has been accepted without examining their other highly suspect credentials, whereas GC commentators must be absolutely impeccable.

I often refer to buck angel, and get the reply, 'but he is a PORN actor!!'

Or baroness Nicholson... 'but she voted against gay marriage'

I am happy to examine and subsequently dismiss the credentials of all commentators, ending up only listening to those with the purest provenance, but who do you think that will leave?

Aimee Challenor or Keira bell?
Caitlin jennee or jk Rowling?
Kathleen sock or grace lavery?
Sharon Davies or Veronica ivy?

nolongersurprised · 22/01/2022 08:54

They blew it wide open. So mainstream media then had to pick it up

The scary thing is that that the Left preferred to blame the father, deny that the rape and happened and therefore ultimately exposed another girl to harm by quietly moving the boy to another school and not disclosing what had happened. They preferred to do this than admit that yes, a boy in a skirt had violently raped (anally and forcible fellatio) a girl in the girls’ bathrooms.

And when the girl’s father tried to point out that yes, boys in girls’ bathrooms was a problem, he was arrested and when his top rode up as he was being dragged on the floor, pictures of him were circulated on line and he was mocked for being overweight.

Yet, some posters here are saying - wait - this person exposing this is the wrong one and we need to wait for someone else, someone whose political views are exemplary. How many Loudoun Counties need to happen while we wait?

"If you hate right wing politics you shouldn't be raging against Matt Walsh you should be raging against all the left wing politicians and media not saying what he's prepared to say, because unless they do, we're heading for Donald Trump #2. "

Absofuckinglutely

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/01/2022 08:48

I think Matt Walsh makes excellent points about trans ideology. He is unafraid to tell the Emperor that he's not wearing any clothes and you can see the effect in the activists' responses. They can't handle the truth because they can't believe anyone would say it. They are so used to affirmation that the truth sounds brazen, bigoted and shocking whereas truth is just truth, it doesn't change according to your feelings.

YY. That's why it was so powerful. People aren't used to anyone coming out with that plain truth. It's the same reason KJK gets lots of positive comments when she goes on TV from people not used to this debate.
