As well as the awful 'chest feeding'.

It makes me angry and sad although I can't really articulate why. What percentage of the population are we appeasing by sacrificing the word woman?

@ReluctantNurseMaid

Are pregnant women not also pregnant people? What about including transgender men and non binary people do you dislike? Inclusivity isn't about appeasing anyone.

Can understand the dislike of the term chest feeding. Everyone has breasts, regardless of sex or gender.

You mean what about including all the other females who could get pregnant, regardless as to how they identify? It’s easy - call the services ‘female’. @ReluctantNurseMaid you know what the issue is. It’s the erasure of females at the hands of males who wish to be seen as female, or females who identify as ‘non-binary’ as a means of either avoiding being seen as female, or appeasing men.

Interesting that your user name includes the word ‘maid’. A female servant.

rosiepickle · 13/01/2022 07:28

I loved becoming a mother and being treated as such in hospital what a shame this has happened.

Mother is a term given to the female sex only. If you don't want to be a mother or described as a pregnant lady/woman/women I'm sure you can express your feelings at your booking appointment without suppressing the other 99% of women who do fit these terms.

334bu · 12/01/2022 23:30

Women should not have to give up their language to suit a tiny minority who want to deny what they are.
Except that is not why we are being asked to give up the word which describes our sex. It has nothing to do with the minority who want to deny what they are, but rather the group of male people who want to say that they too are women and if woman refers to a female body, then they cannot be women. If inclusion were the reason, then all men would also have to be referred to as people with penises/ prostates/ testiclrs etc. However, they are not because it was never about inclusion but rather the removal of the word woman meaning adult human female, because it excludes this subset of males who wish to identify as women.

Well trans people will know if the word woman applies to them. If they are pregnant then the health info is relevant. Why must some take it upon themselves to be offended by everything? Just use woman, same way everyone still uses the word man without batting an eyelid

It's my preferred term and should be respected :)

ScribblingPixie · 12/01/2022 22:50

Women and other pregnant people. Totally 'inclusive'.

Snugglepumpkin · 12/01/2022 22:25

I know they are all just women, but some of those women don't want to be called women.

As that's the case, they should be the ones to have the different name as they want to be mentioned separately.

Women should not have to give up their language to suit a tiny minority who want to deny what they are.

Linguini · 12/01/2022 22:03

@Snugglepumpkin

I read an article today on msn by Refinery 29 which used "Women & people with wombs".

I thought that was a good solution actually.

Pregnant people etc... is just offensive & dehumanising to women as it denies their sex.

The people who don't want to be called women still have wombs though or they couldn't be requiring maternity services.

Women and people with wombs

The same group are women and people with ovaries.

The group is also women and people with a cervix.

The group is also women and people who menstruate.

Also women and birthing bodies.

Also women and people of the female sex....

Or let's try without the "and".

It still makes perfect sense to everyone concerned without resorting to referring to humans as someone with certain organs.

Waftypants · 12/01/2022 21:22

The erasure of women marches on. Ffs. Completely unnecessary woke wokeness. Human females get pregnant. The word they're searching for is woman. Woman woman woman. There I said it.

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 12/01/2022 21:18

Organised attack my arse 😒

timeisnotaline · 12/01/2022 21:15

Here’s a great example: using people completely hides his actual opinion and the dangers this approach poses specifically and only to women, which is that convicted male prisoners should be sent to women’s prisons if said male prisoners say that’s where they belong. Tell me that the word people isn’t hiding the reality here.

YouSetTheTone · 12/01/2022 21:02

@timeisnotaline great post. And the article linked to above also points out that pushing Queer Theory in third world countries can be perceived as oppressive/ colonialist.

timeisnotaline · 12/01/2022 20:35

@RufustheFloralmissingreindeer

people seem to be incredibly offended about something that doesn't have any real effect on them...

This seems a bit ironic

Who said that? It affects me. It affects me as a member of a sex class with across the board poorer health outcomes than men, by removing the focus from the gap and the reasons for it. It affects me particularly regarding medical support during pregnancy and childbirth and reproductive system health, as this is a critical area where only women need healthcare hence has long been neglected. It affects me as a heavily pregnant women who finds inaccurate terms like chestfeeding extremely offputting. Even if you were a lactating man it would be breastfeeding just like it’s breast cancer even if you’re a man, not the chest cavity/chest wall/chest anything. I want healthcare from people focussed on health care not on ok let’s use that made up term that isn’t true to keep some people happy despite those people seeming quite comfortable enough wiht their biology to grow a baby in their uterus, they have to draw a line and that line is women and any related terms, so you have to not be a woman anymore. Have you not seen the recent horrific stats on how much more likely women are to die from surgery with a male surgeon than a female, no similar effect observed for men? Not having to think about women specifically removes the need to confront these realities which have enormous health impacts for women. And let’s not even get into the developing world.
Snugglepumpkin · 12/01/2022 20:22

@BlueberryCheezecake

It is denying the reality of their sex, of what they are which enables them to be pregnant.

Not all women can get pregnant, but only those who are biologically women can get pregnant.

People refers to others of the opposite sex who will never be the target of maternity services.
It is pointlessly inaccurate & makes it hard for those who do not necessarily have a good standard of English or have English as a second/third language to understand.
Forcing language to contort just to fit fantastical thinking leaves it too vague.

TheWeeDonkey · 12/01/2022 20:20

Can someone please explain to me how this is not a men's rights movement? Because if it isn't then why do they act like one?

Theeyeballsinthesky · 12/01/2022 20:09

Yes of course the erasure of the words women and mother in maternity documents is noting at all to get pissed off about. Fgs!!

I do wonder if those posters going “but it’s inclluuuuussive” spend their time slosh beating the donkey sanctuary for not including cows or age UK for not including children

Not everything is for everyone ffs

How on earth is it dehumanising to refer to women as people? Literally the very definition of 'people' is humanising, unless you think there's non-human people wandering around the planet.

Because it's reducing women from women to an anonymous, random, mixed sex human thing.

Adult human female. Deal with it.

Just non male people who aren't entitled to their own name because the male people don't like it. If it were otherwise we would be talking about ejaculating people or people with prostates.as well.

334bu · 12/01/2022 19:54

'Most **men" occasionally fail to get or keep an erection" NHS document on erectile distinction. Nary a transwoman or non binary male in sight.
Erasing women all about keeping the male sex happy. Inclusion is s total red herring.

inclusivity isn't about appeasing anyone.

But that IS what inclusivity is! Of course it is appeasing a group of people.

Strange that you think otherwise.

BlinkingBananas · 12/01/2022 19:35

I very much doubt it. The Chief Exec doesn't have time to sanction everything. It will go through the Comms team.

You could contact them in the first instance but they will probably give you some waffle.

musicalfrog · 12/01/2022 19:23

@BlinkingBananas

East Lancashire?

elht.nhs.uk/about-us/coronavirus-covid-19-guidance/maternity/lateral-flow

Write a letter of complaint to the Chief Exec. Ours is very proactive and would respond to this. There is a lot of politically correct woke bollocks in the NHS at the moment which needs to be challenged.

No and it's not on the actual website just on their Facebook maternity page from what I can tell.

Would the chief exec not already have ok'ed it then do you think?

[quote DaisiesandButtercups]I shared this on the BJM thread yesterday but it really is excellent and the authors are well respected. Anyone making complaints to trusts might like to link this or quote from it.

Thanks for sharing this. It ought to be sent to EVERY NHS maternity trust.

‘female sperm’. Unbelievable Confused

For every ‘but beeee kind’ woman I know who says ‘pregnant people’ I’m going to point out that a new mother and father are both referred to inclusively as ‘birthing parents’ but only one of them will have very specific support requirements after birth in terms of their recovery, breastfeeding support and assistance in the bond between mother and newborn. (As covered in the article). Not talking about this correctly diminishes the knowledge of the importance of these very specific needs of a woman and her baby after birth.
