PurgatoryOfPotholes

Please tell me that someone was around to point out Barrington’s presence was not an anachronism? Admittedly in the C12/13 the UK’s* (small) black population were heavily concentrated in London, but there’s actually a record of a black outlaw in Nottingham at the end of the C13 (Bartholomew not Barrington; & he’s wanted for doing a bunk from “his said lord Roger de Lyntin” - aka the bloke who dragged him to England from Africa - rather than gallivanting about with Robin Hood, but…).

  • Obviously there wasn’t a UK at the time, but making things even more complicated by putting a wiggle-squiggle will-be in the phrase seemed daft.

@TheGreatATuin

He's going to get abuse for 'defending' her, isn't he? Even if it's him just putting the record straight to say he didn't say what was claimed. I wonder how he'll deal with that.
Oh I think Jon Stewart will cope. In his own way he's uncancellable too. The American right hate him anyway but he's hugely influential on the American left.
AbandonedCharacter · 05/01/2022 19:57

JKR puts the milk bottle back in the fridge when it's very nearly empty.

ArabellaScott · 05/01/2022 19:55

JK Rowling left all the orange ones in the Quality Street box.

'Get a fucking grip'

I concur.

Cue lots of reverse ferreting...

BTW I remember watching an interview with JKR about how she had to really battle for any agency at all in the first film. The idea she would have had the last word on how Gringotts and the goblins looked like is just ridiculous. She did not have the power at that point.

TheGreatATuin · 05/01/2022 19:48

Oh, I just saw Jon Stewart's video. Good for him. It looks like Newsweek ran with a clickbait headline that took the worst take on what he actually said.
Shame on them.

KimikosNightmare · 05/01/2022 19:47

Well done Jon Stewart.

TheGreatATuin · 05/01/2022 19:41

Anyone engaging in good faith would know she's not antisemtic. Gold loving goblins have been a staple of European fairy tales and children's stories for centuries. It's just so incredibly lazy.
I wish her critics had the integrity to at least criticise or address anything she's actually said, but of course, nothing she's actually said has been that bad so they'd just look like bullies.
It's just mud slinging. I have no respect for people who engage in that while pretending they're somehow being the good guys. It's ridiculous.

Of course, it's not surprising as JKR has done nothing wrong. She's not antisemitic or transphobic. These kind of people who say she is will grasp at anything and yet never have any actual proof.
One minute they're saying it's ok for her to be left out of HP as all she did was write the books, next she's responsible for everything in the films.. make it make sense 🤦🏻‍♀️

NitroNine · 05/01/2022 19:38

Am genuinely relieved he’s now trying to rescue JKR from under bus it seems it was a genuine accident that he shoved her into the path of it. I really enjoyed The Daily Show when he was on it; I like his animal rights work; & I like that he goes beyond slacktivism for the causes he’s interested in.

Sadly I suspect that there will now be lots of groundless accusations of JKR having silenced Jon Stewart using her fame + wealth + power (none of which, obviously, Mr S is blessed with) Hmm

KittenKong · 05/01/2022 19:28

I knew a Chang (surname) at school.

yes indeed, just watching this and very pleased that he has been so utterly loving of JKR. Newsweek magazine is "roasted" and everyone has to "get a fucking grip" - wonderful!

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 05/01/2022 19:22

Kotatsu

You've just reminded me of one of my favourite ever threads on this site.

A poster criticised Tony Robinson's Maid Marian and her Merry Men, the BBC children's sitcom for being anachronistic because the character Barrington was black.

But she had had no problem with the Crystal Maze parody episode, the frequent references to Robin of Kensington's GCSE results, or indeed the episode where Maid Marian stages a televised fundraising event to raise money for the release of a chicken called Colin (Colin's Release!)

Sophoclesthefox · 05/01/2022 19:20

That’s very clear.

He says:

“I do not think JK Rowling is anti Semitic. I did not acccuse her of being anti Semitic. I do not think the movies are anti Semitic”

So. Those of you who have hopped on to this thread to say “I agree with
Jon Stewart, JK Rowling is anti Semitic”, I think it would be nice if you followed his lead and retracted that.

Don’t you?

Woodlandwater · 05/01/2022 19:15

I really hope jk has an assistant who filters Twitter for her, I can't imagine the stress she must be under

ScreamingMeMe · 05/01/2022 19:14

*an apology.

Ooh, I hope he gets them to issue an apologise.

JKR news is the biggest clickbait going, isn't it?

Tanith · 05/01/2022 19:10

"Chang is a Korean first name and you don't generally get see that surname translated as Chang from Chinese in the US (because many US Chinese are from Taiwan); so a lot of 3rd gen Korean American students decided JKR was Kish mixing up a Korean first name and got offended."

There are 20+ Cho Changs on Linked In so it's evidently a name here.
Chang as a surname is common enough in the UK.

Mollyollydolly · 05/01/2022 19:03

Nice to see he's called it out.

Sophoclesthefox · 05/01/2022 19:03

I’ve very much reminded of people going to bat for Jewish people by getting het up over JKRs all edged “anti semitism” being unable, apparently to see or hear the Jewish people (on this thread and elsewhere) who do not find the portrayal anti Semitic.

It reminds me very strongly of another set of behaviours we see on here, of people who are not trans going to bat for trans people, but being unable to acknowledge trans people who disagree with them, because they’re the “wrong sort of trans”.

In other contexts, this would be recognised as some sort of “white saviour” thing (a phrase I don’t much like, but it’s descriptive of a behaviour that exists). The point is the do goodery, regardless of if the people being done good to actually want it, or share the same view of what’s happening…

If many Jewish people have been involved in the production, and say they are not in any way offended, and have a different read than you bold warriors for justice, doesn’t it at least give you pause to wonder if you’re helping?

I utterly deplore this social media drive to seize on the worst possible explanation for everything, and the blattering leaden annihilation of any kind of nuance or seeking after truth and meaning.

Kotatsu · 05/01/2022 18:56

JK said once that she tried to pick unusual names because she didn't want a real life child of the same name to wind up being picked on. So we have Vernon, Dudley, Hermione, Ronald and Ginevra. grin

That's actually very kind - one of my kids has a different, but similar style 'character' name, and he does get a bit miffed sometimes. Suits him though.

And I wouldn't criticise based on Cho Chang at all - it's like the discussion I had with my parents over the black actor playing Hansel in a fairy tale - there's a WITCH and a gingerbread cottage, and what you're quibbling over is that one of the siblings isn't ethnically correct for the origin of the fairy tale?
