all supposition and opinion.

Including this bit?

JS has behaved incredibly poorly firstly by making the initial slander and secondly for then weaselling about trying to put the blame onto Newsweek rather than taking responsibility for his own actions.

ArabellaScott · 05/01/2022 22:56

Aha. Well, that's a bit shitey, then. Will be interesting to see how it plays out. Hopefully, a net positive for JKR.

ShagMeRiggins · 05/01/2022 22:53

@nauticant

I think JS has been very sneaky here. Here's my version. I think once the Newsweek story went viral he realised he had to distance himself from the comments of this they'd reported. There was a risk of legal unpleasantries and he realised Newsweek wouldn't be on the hook because they could say "we were just reporting what JS said" and on the face of it they were. Therefore, he's now going through a pantomime to suggest that Newsweek made up their account of what he said when they actually didn't. In such muddled circumstances where JS has disowned his comments, sort of, there would be little pointl in JKR going after JS legally and so he wriggles off the hook without going through the humiliation of having to apologise to JKR.

Hmmm. All plausible, but also all supposition and opinion.

I’ve watched Jon Stewart for decades (though not recently, I admit). Nothing about him has ever sent alarm bells to me. Nothing ever near the level of plotting that I inferred from your post.

I think he’s funny, intelligent, human, got it wrong, said so.

Sometimes people are just human and honest.

IvyTwines · 05/01/2022 22:52

The Guardian, surprisingly late to the party, published a piece around 10pm claiming Stewart was criticising Rowling, then hastily removed it and replaced it with a PA news agency piece headlined 'Jon Stewart denies claims...'

nauticant · 05/01/2022 22:39

If you look at the original Newsweek article, it appears to have been substantially amended today, while still keeping its original publication of 4 January 2022. The lawyers have been all over this.

Cho Chang is a valid name.

Firstly, it could easily be transliterated in Wade-Giles which is not uncommon in Britain and amongst Chinese diaspora (example Peking rather than Beijing).

Second it can be a transliteration of a dialect, of which Chinese has hundreds.

Thirdly, two character names are not uncommon either. My own full name (not my username) is two characters. Equally when in the West it is common to put the family name last even though that isn't how we do it typically in Chinese. When in Rome...

Fourthly, just because a name is rare or unusual doesn't mean it's not ok to use it. There are weird and wonderful names all over China I can assure you.

Fifthly, if her parents were inspired by other cultures to give her that name, what then? Must she remain 'culturally pure'? My eldest has a Western name that I love, should I immediately repent?

And finally, as another poster has pointed out... there are literally people with the name Cho Chang!

I think someone legal has had a word with Jon Stewart and following that he's making out it's all Newsweek's fault.

I do too.

Cailleach1 · 05/01/2022 21:20

The bit where JS points out the anti semitic drawings of Jewish people and said 'JKR was like, "can we get these guys to run our bank?" '.

Maid Marian was awesome - I didn’t like the toilet-humour type-bits, because even as a small child I was no good with that, but it was (as you’d expect given team behind it) funny & clever.

The theme tune is a bop, too…

Am always bewildered by actual grown adults who are (apparently) Quite Certain there were no black people living in the UK before the Windrush. Just… boggling…

whynotwhatknot · 05/01/2022 21:09

jkr changed marathon to snickers

not mine but greeat

Cailleach1 · 05/01/2022 20:48

Ok, JS on very manufactured ground in that video.

nauticant · 05/01/2022 20:30

Jon Stewart's clarification isn't completely 100% consistent with the original source of the Newsweek article:

Coyoacan · 05/01/2022 20:29

As a Jewish person all I hear is that these people think Jews are like goblins?? Because they're ugly and like money? How progressive

This is what is so perplexing and so awful.

Please tell me that someone was around to point out Barrington’s presence was not an anachronism? Admittedly in the C12/13 the UK’s* (small) black population were heavily concentrated in London, but there’s actually a record of a black outlaw in Nottingham at the end of the C13 (Bartholomew not Barrington; & he’s wanted for doing a bunk from “his said lord Roger de Lyntin” - aka the bloke who dragged him to England from Africa - rather than gallivanting about with Robin Hood, but…).

  • Obviously there wasn’t a UK at the time, but making things even more complicated by putting a wiggle-squiggle will-be in the phrase seemed daft.
I regret to tell you that there was no one historically well-informed enough to mention Bartholomew! We did have a small discussion (IIRC) about black people in Britain at that time, but not in that level of detail.

The detail was saved for episodes of Maid Marian! It turned out many MNers recalled that with crystal clear accuracy, and they spent the evening enthisiastically asking whether Rotten Rose's job selling double-glazing had been true to life in 13-1400s England.

ShagMeRiggins · 05/01/2022 20:23

Oh I think Jon Stewart will cope. In his own way he's uncancellable too. The American right hate him anyway but he's hugely influential on the American left.

I’d say he’s liked by intelligent people in the USA who have a sense of humour and/or understand the concept of free speech, whether they’re right or left.

Mumsnet often dismisses 360 million Americans based on one American or on current leadership. It is—as are the residents of all countries—so much more than that.

ChannelLightVessel · 05/01/2022 20:15

Kotatsu, for what it’s worth, the three British Chinese people I’ve known best all use first name + last name, although they have second names (to differentiate them from siblings with the same first name, I believe).

nettie434 · 05/01/2022 20:12

I was going to post a link to Jon Stewart's response but I see that lots of people have done that already. I can't believe that this is all about the depiction in the films (not the books as Hadley Freeman has pointed out) from people who only the other week were minimising JKR's role in the franchise. Not to mention all those who denied that Jeremy Corbyn and other Labour members were anti semitic who are now seemingly very concerned about anti semitism when it is a stick with which to beat JKR.

ArabellaScott · 05/01/2022 20:10

JKR also stole the missing 's' in assassination in the post above just to make me look like a pillock.

Fimofriend · 05/01/2022 20:10

Excuse me, but if Jon Stewart found that those goblins reminded him of jews then he is the one being anti-semitic. What the actual hell? WHY would they remind him of jews?

ClaudineClare · 05/01/2022 20:07

JKR always leaves the landing light on. This shows quite clearly that global warming is all her fault. And the massive hike in fuel prices.

ArabellaScott · 05/01/2022 20:07

JKR shot JR?

  • and I've heard on good authority it's quite possible JKR was implicated in the assasination of JFK.

Rumours that the J actually stands for 'Judas' have never been denied by supporters of JFC.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 05/01/2022 20:04

What I heard was that JKR squeezes the toothpaste tube in the middle.

YouCantTourniquetTheTaint · 05/01/2022 20:04

John Stewart has eloquently put that rumour to rest, telling News week to "eat my ass" and has told them to "get a fuckin grip" 👏👏👏 I tell you what that was a...
