I guess they at least note her absence. But can’t help say ‘widely considered as transphobic’. Just why? Why say anything.

I've also just watched this - DP is a Potter fan while I was in the camp of "Lovely for the children" when they came out, because, well, life etc and I'm now in my 50s..... I came on here to see if there was any comment, and because I was quite sad at the lack of active inclusion of JKR, without whom none of this would have been possible.

It was an interesting little documentary to be fair, but I couldn't help but keep thinking how sad that these very successful young people could also be so tone deaf - they banged on about how inclusive and safe and family feeling the whole experience was, and can't see the irony in that...... things that have critiqued the books after JKRs essay have tried to make out it is steeped in exclusion and subtext from the get go - but was it really?

I dunno, I think it's an appalling indictment on the world today that, as far as I'm aware - and happy to be corrected if I've missed it - those young people have not at the very least denounced the harassment, death threats etc against the woman who gave them their springboard into their very successful lives.

Blackbird1234 · 03/01/2022 17:14

So they should no longer benefit from their own hard work because they dont agree with some things the writer of the books has said and have been vocal about that? They're not allowed to celebrate their own hard work, as well as all of their colleagues?

Kanaloa · 03/01/2022 15:00

Other than their unshakeable principles it seems to me like some of them need to move on anyway. Some of them (who are quick to bash Rowling) are still living entirely off Harry Potter, posting about it constantly, talking about it all the time etc.

Talk about something else, you’re thirty something years old. Like yes you were in Harry Potter - so were loads of people. What else did you do?

ginandbearit · 03/01/2022 14:52

Those three snivelling third rate twerps should surely renounce all royalties from the films as an act of true solidarity with the most oppressed ever© , er ..or are they happy to be living off the endeavors of a t**f...
Stonking cowards ..

HermioneKipper · 03/01/2022 12:52

Don’t think so. She says TWAW and that trans Harry Potter fans should block JKR. Also she thinks that JKR shouldn’t discuss this. Perhaps not as disloyal as the others but she didn’t just keep quiet did she?

And apparently “cis women aren’t the vulnerable minority here”

"The actor who played Luna gave JK a trouncing at one point so I’ll not believe any nonsense platitudes from her."

I think you must have confused Evanna Lynch with someone else. She tried to defend JKR and was piled on by TRAs to the point where she had to deleted her Twitter account. I don't recall her attacking JKR at all.

Actually, I was interested in who didn't attend. Jason Isaacs was Covid-positive so couldn't, but it seemed to me that an awful lot of people weren't there.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 03/01/2022 11:32

Self-seeking hypocrisy makes you sick too? I didn't think it could be only me.

IntermittentParps · 03/01/2022 10:31

@Biscuitsneeded

Lucy Mangan most definitely knows what's what.
I agree. And I've no problem with the word 'emetic' either.

[quote SusannaQueen]The Graun's FB post on this has some heartening comments. Was quite surprised as it's usually TRA central.

I think they’ve all decided that JKR is now separate from Harry Potter which is so unbelievably entitled.

Yes they’ve all got no shame in cashing in at all. The absolute bare faced cheek of them.

Chris Rankin, who played Percy Weasley, had a pop the other day, I’m sure to keep himself relevant. And all the while is doing a musical tour based on Harry Potter! It beggars belief!

Kanaloa · 03/01/2022 03:41

I didn’t watch it - although I was amazed so many of them wanted to be involved in a documentary about the work of such a transphobic person that they disagree with.

Some of them seem to think the whole world of Harry Potter sprung from nowhere. It’s just all a bit pathetic and it seems lots of people on the public eye will literally parrot anything back at the public so as not to be ‘cancelled.’

HermioneKipper · 03/01/2022 01:59

The actor who played Luna gave JK a trouncing at one point so I’ll not believe any nonsense platitudes from her.

I don’t want to watch it. They’re a load of backstabbing, ungrateful brats. Padma Patil aside, not one of the “child actors” has stood up for her.

RoyalCorgi · 02/01/2022 20:52

Just had a look at the (inaccurate) Steerpike article on the Guardian's supposedly withdrawing its poll on JK Rowling and was drawn to the list showing the 10 most popular Steerpike articles of the year. The first was the one entitled Terf war embroils Guardian HQ. You can see why the Speccie is publishing so much on this subject - there's a lot of interest out there.

Blackbird1234 · 02/01/2022 17:57

@Justme56 Out of interest, what makes you say that the actors are self obsessed?

Unusual for a tv opinion piece…

Justme56 · 01/01/2022 22:25

I imagine going to something like this full of self obsessed actors all fighting for the spotlight wouldn’t be JKRs thing anyway. I imagine a lot of this is all quite fake.

HoyaSaxa · 01/01/2022 22:25

I’ve just watched it. Very telling that a few of the senior creatives such as producer/ directors make reference to Jo Rowling and the world that she created. The actress playing Luna also was positive.

And the more that the three main actors wittered on about how wonderful the world of Harry Potter is, the more it became glaringly obvious that it all came from the wonderful mind of one woman.

NotBadConsidering · 01/01/2022 22:12

But while “widely denounced as transphobic” may be sort of accurate - widely denounced on Twitter is by no means representative of the world - it is not a neutral statement. If Mangan wanted to be neutral, or even pro JKR then it should have been qualified with “whilst also garnering widespread support for standing up for women’s rights”.

Every time a publication or journalist states JKR is transphobic, or considered transphobic, or has been denounced as transphobic, or publish anti-transgender views with or without quotation marks, without qualifying the huge level of agreement and support she has garnered, they are taking an ideological position against her, and against the basic tenets of journalism.

It’s bullshit.

SantaClawsServiette · 01/01/2022 21:45

If she attended this sort of thing, I think it could be really awkward on a personal level. Having to play nice-nice with people who were basically a bit shit to you. Even if she has no ill will I can see a lot of opportunity for social embarrassment.

I think I might avoid something like that just to get out of what might turn out to be a horribly non-fun event.

KimikosNightmare · 01/01/2022 20:10

The review in The Metro is much worse. I won't post a link- but take my word - you'll see red.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 01/01/2022 18:51

I like Lucy. One of the few columnists I still occasionally read in it.

Omicrone · 01/01/2022 18:50

@rabbitwoman

I cannot honestly believe for one moment that jk Rowling doesn't have complete control over this situation. If she is not involved it's because she chose not to be, for whatever reason, but no one has the power or balls to exclude her from her own creation, she would have made sure of that.

At the very most, some of those actors could have refused to take part if she did, that's as much sway as they have.

Really honestly and with all my heart, I believe we are getting closer to the time when everyone is going to have to apologise and admit she was right. She's just holding on until the optimum moment. If she hadn't become a billionaire through her talent, she would have cleared up at poker.

(of course, I could be wrong. Can you imagine the phone call or meeting where they told her she would not be involved and her just saying OK, tho)

Yep, I have been thinking about this and I think you are right. I think she knew that if she was actively involved in this it would cause a shitstorm and she has probably had enough of that for now. If she had really wanted to be involved in this she could have, or she probably could have just stopped it from happening. I also agree that she knows that the time will come when everyone will have to apologise to her, we are already hurtling towards that time, look at the swell of support that she has had in the last few months and also the general swell of support for women speaking out on this issue. Compare where we are now to where we were in 2018, or even 2020 when Joanne first tweeted on this.

She is playing a long game, she doesn't care what people think of her in the meantime, she knows that she is right on this Smile

Graun is a total basket case and has been for years. As more and more sunlight pours in on this batshittery i wonder what would need to happen for the Graun to change tack? They are going to look even more stupid than they already do when the tide changes.
