Also there is the small matter that the name is trademarked be Warner brothers.

But who knew? I certainly had no idea there were to US Quidditch leagues running around with broomsticks between there legs!

I think the name of this activity is the least of its problems tbh.

Thank you FannyCann. Amazing how far this wonderful woman's creativity has spread across the world. But oh dear, some people's lives must be exhausting as they scour the horizon for the latest microaggression / unpure thought that they must leap to respond to.

@crumpet

Am still gobsmacked that this appears to be a real game. Played by adults. Mostly men I see, who seem to enjoy running around holding an extended phallus.

God it’s funny though. Not just the playing but the pofaced seriousness of it all!

Both the league representatives quoted in the article are women, as are most of the pictured players. So where are you "seeing" that it's mostly men?

[quote FannyCann]Thanks for the laugh this morning. 😂

I am minded of the letter from Sir Archibald Clerk Kerr sharing a little light in the dark days of the war.

We mustn't be mean and selfish when a little brightness is shed even by the DM.

I love a bit of insanity on a Sunday morning. Thank you for this shed of brightness Fanny 😂😂😂

I don't understand how changing the name makes a difference, when they're still playing a game she invented.

Perhaps this is one of those occasions when reality is a welcome friend. They demonstrably aren't playing quidditch. They maybe clutching broomsticks but no one is flying. I'm not clear what they do about the golden snitch but either someone is throwing it or they have a battery operated "flying" ball thingy with wings. Confused
So they can reasonably argue they aren't playing quidditch and call it whatever they like.
Then people will soon forget about the association with Harry Potter, refine those broomsticks and before you know it they will be playing lacrosse! Xmas Grin

We play quidditch with our Guides occasionally- (don't use broomsticks!).
It's good fun, lots of running about and laughter.
I won't be changing the name.

SW1amp · 19/12/2021 11:09

There are some Quidditch teams near me..! We quite often walk past them ‘playing’ on a weekend

They are the sort of people who were in the battle re-enactment and Dungeons and Dragons clubs at university, with some very enthusiastic Americans thrown in

Even the competitive frisbee teams look down on them, and they were hardly the cool kids..!

US league?? My brother's friend is at Cambridge, and is on their Quidditch team!

@Sportsnight

Surely they’ll have more trouble than the name? She invented the game, so has copyright of that too. Otherwise I can just launch my new board games Quonopoly and Qleudo with no fear of comeback.
This is what I was wondering, and you expressed it so well. I don't understand how changing the name makes a difference, when they're still playing a game she invented. Confused
IncompleteSenten · 19/12/2021 10:43

They should stop playing it. No matter the name it comes from jkr and since they feel so strongly surely they don't want to keep enjoying it or financially benefitting from it...

Same with the Harry potter lot. Give back the money you earned, stop dining out on your past roles. Don't bash her with your right fist while holding the cash she made you in your left.

ArtemesiaK · 19/12/2021 10:37

What if one of them has a lapse of memory and accidentally misnames it? The shame! It will be like playing Quidditch on eggshells....

VelvetChairGirl · 19/12/2021 10:32

Let them distance themselves from their market and fall into obscurity and go bust.

Taking credit away from the woman who created something is so progressive and not at all in line with all the misogyny that took credit away from women like Rosalind Franklin, Lisa Meitner, Zelda Fitzgerald etc.

FrancescaContini · 19/12/2021 09:00

Made me laugh, thanks Grin

Linguini · 19/12/2021 08:53

Spectacular reference FannyCann 🤣

BraveBananaBadge · 19/12/2021 08:49

Just a hunch, but I think Warner bros. owing the copyright ©️ to the name is really what's important here. Call me cynical.

It's exactly what's important here, as it says in the story - which is hilarious as well as maddening, for the Twitter reaction and the fact the game is described with a straight face as "a contact sport with broomsticks". Grin

These people who want to profit from JKR while pretending she doesn't exist really are the worst little shits. But then again reality isn't their strong suit.

Very true @Rightsraptor but I'm sure a little journalistic embroidery is allowed in the pursuit of fun and denial of reality!

Owning, not owing.

Soontobe60 · 19/12/2021 07:34

It’s pathetic. Both the ‘game’ and the name changing. As my dear mother would say. ‘Grow up and get a proper job’.

Just maybe funding is easier to come by if you're not about to find yourself involved in a court case against a massive entertainment conglomeration.
