And just like that - females squeamish at male public masturbation

Has anyone watched the new Sex and the City show yet? I got really annoyed and switched off. Carrie is on a podcast, lots of chat about cis het. Whatevs.

But what really made me furious was when the male podcast guest said he couldn’t think of anywhere where he hadn’t masturbated in public. And Carrie said she hadn’t and they laughed at her like she was such a prude. I suppose it was trying to show how behind the times she is. I suppose she didn’t want to “kink shame” .

When did it become ok for men to masturbate in public?

Yes I know it’s a shit show BTW.

@CheeseMmmm

Lobster- yes! It's shit I had have a slightly different take though.

And would add Dr who to the list!

What I have seen is-

Simplification of characters and stories. Very little establishment of even main characters.
Any establishment is through scenes to spell out one or two points. And they are standard.
Eg

Person in clothes old/ battered etc. running from, fighting people in uniforms.
Determined, goodie, wanted by baddies, brave, hero.

People (often with non USA accents) in uniforms, marching in groups. Generally doing something BAD. Are baddies.

No nuance, no complex individual stuff, no doubts, dilemmas. No personality essentially. Nothing. No insight into internal life, complexity. Nope.

I mean sure this isn't highbrow stuff but still!

To my shame I saw part of one episode where a creature (huge spider?) was dying a slow, agonising death, and Dr Who was aghast that someone had thought to pit it out of its misery.

"We dont kill living creatures".

No nuance, no discussion over what the most humane action is. Terrible message and there was no need for the scene.

@RockPaperScience

The above post made we realise that this show could put their US centric view of gender ideology into the living rooms of many people (likely women) in the UK.

I wonder what the reaction will be.

The general feeling from telly addicts is not impressed.

@DuckDuckNo

I've seen it claimed that the show is still transphobic because there's no trans woman character. I suggest the writers rectify this immediately. Harry can transition! She can then take the place of Samantha as the sexy one and the others can gush how gorgeous she is in her dresses and Manolos. Charlotte can become even more of a sanctimonious perfect little lady by standing by her (wo)man.
Excellent idea! Harriet will be a much better woman than those boring cis bitches.

Nope it’s gone from being a lighthearted but if fluff to trying to “educate” - not how I want to be spending my evenings!

frogswimming · 17/12/2021 15:17

I'm not going to bother watching it now. It's not entertaining.

PankhurstConnection · 17/12/2021 15:12

I remember reading that SATC was written by gay men. The premise was that the female characters were basically gay men. This made it all make sense to me. I liked the fashion but never related to the characters or stories.

Suddenly a great deal becomes clear. I didn't know this.

Ugh. 'Gender In The City' isn't really doing it for me but like a PP I'm hoping Anthony will continue to be the voice of sanity.
Oh come on now, you know as well as I do that Anthony will be "educated" and will see the error of his ways in no time at all.
WorriedMumsDontSleep · 17/12/2021 14:29

I feel like woke is the wrong word for this. As originally woke was a bit of a synonym for recognising structural racism I feel like it is more akin to feminism (which also recognises sex based inequality) than gender ideology, which is more about weaponizing characteristics.

Isn't there a word for that? Because there should be. I know there's luxury beliefs, but gender ideology can be harmful in a way like other luxury beliefs, like veganism, eco warriors, left politics aren't.

Scraggythang · 17/12/2021 14:03

Cynthia Nixon is super woke and a parent to a trans child, so I don’t think she’d sign up to her character being critical.

To be fair, most people I know are very much not aware of the gender problems. I became aware as a double pronged thing of relative with poor mental health changing I'd, and jk Rowling. I cared enough to research it but am very much in the minority. Am very clued up thanks to fwr and all my peers and family are largely ignorant, falling into two categories: expressing mild GC concerns but not understanding the scale of it or full on be kind.

I could definitely see it passing by Carrie(self obsessed anyway) but I would hope Miranda would understand the legal implications.

DaggerIsle · 17/12/2021 11:24

What I don't get is how the 'ladies' (I guess they are not girls anymore) are acting as if they haven't heard anything about the current gender debate.
Surely people over 50 still use social media? Surely some of Rose and Lily's classmates might have expressed different gender identities, they would have discussed trans awareness at school etc

Instead all 3 of them acted as if they had been transported to a magical land where queerness was basically like being part of a huge love orgy where everyone fucks everyone else.

Wanderingowl · 17/12/2021 11:10

@middleager

Entirely predictible.

And that scene where the podcast guy (who had previously bragged to audiences in a 'hip' way about wanking in various NYC destinations) joked on the podcast about having sexual relations with a minor... jeez, it's so depressing.

The arrogance of Che that her family would be so obsessed with her sex life and personality choices re self ID. It really is "me, me, me". I don't care! It's boring, it's naval gazing. The family were probaby bored too to be honest.

Che's "Cheer if you fucked me! Cheer if I fucked you!Cheer if you want to fuck me!" I mean what the actual fuck was that? It sure as hell wasn't funny. It was kind of pathetic in an audience of drunk people, some of whom you may have fucked but this was being recorded for a Netflix special. Who the actual hell would want to sit at home and watch that?

And maybe I'm very squeamish and prudish but I'm a little younger than Sara Ramirez and presumably Che. There is just no way in hell that I would be standing in front of an audience, largely made up of people in their twenties and yelling about fucking them. I mean, I'm not going to yell about fucking large groups of anyone, but certainly not an audience most of whom are roughly 20 years my junior. It would just feel utterly pathetic at best and, considering Che is holding a position of influence as some sort of 'celebrity,' really predatory at worst.

RaisedByPangolins · 17/12/2021 11:07

Watched the first 3 episodes last night - wanted to give it a chance before slating it but what a steaming pile of shit. They’ve made all the characters into parodies - Miranda wtf?! She’s a successful professional woman and has been reduced to a blundering fool. Carrie, a sassy journalist who can no longer string a sentence together. And Charlotte, who was always a bit vacuous is probably the closest to what she was before, but seems to be acting in a school play not a network TV series.

Che’s ‘comedy’ routine was painful. Not one actual joke, just a load of waffle about how many people wanted to fuck Che. At least they reference all the wokeness with the woke buzzer, but honestly, what a load of wank. It’s like they’ve written it to appeal to a whole new audience by taking the piss out of the original audience and characters being so out of touch. Everyone referencing how grey and old they look, Steve’s hearing aids and constant missing what’s being said. Just totally ageist.

And sad to hear that Big is such a fuck up in RL. The little dancing/singing moment made me smile, then I read about his sexual assaults today. Bastard.

RockPaperScience · 17/12/2021 10:46

Having read the précis of episode 3, I’m out.

Absolute load of gender identity pushing rubbish. Wasted opportunity to showcase interesting, complex female characters in their fifties living in NY. The scene where Big died was a rare moment of truth and humanity in a sea of meaningless pronouns and too-cool-for-school gender crap.

I wasn’t expecting Shakespeare, just some escapism in this shitty pandemic. Instead of virtue signalling garbage.

@DaggerIsle

I was coming to say that re Anthony. His advice was wonderfully simple and supportive. As for Che.... that 'comedy' thing was ridiculous. The whole hysterical vibe for a rather banal coming out story? And the 3 protagonists looking on with tears in their eyes.... WTF?
WTF indeed, Miranda had evangelical gleaming eyes
CruellaDeVilla · 17/12/2021 10:28

Totally agree @Wanderingowl

Never liked it 20 years ago - oh just fuck off with your constant wittering on about shoes and whether he likes you or not - and I definitely won’t waste money on this if they’re using the “c” word.

Wanderingowl · 16/12/2021 23:25

Didn’t she at one point pretend to be a lesbian at work and take someone to a work do as her girlfriend? I can’t remember the ending to that.

Yeah, you are right. That happened with Miranda, she was assumed to be a lesbian and invited to dinners by her boss who thought she was more interesting as a lesbian.

So Sam had a short lived relationship with a woman. Charlotte hung out with the Power Lesbians. Miranda once let her co workers think she was a lesbian for potential work gains. And Carrie kissed Alanis Morissette in a game of spin the bottle where everyone was bisexual.

And people say the original show lacked diversity!!!!!

Episode 3 was pretty bad. Everything with Sara Ramirez is just awful. Her "comedy" was more like a bad Ted Talk. There were no jokes, no funny stories, no build ups to punch lines. Just a long, long rant about her gender identity, for the sake of a rant about her gender identity. And it was made sure that we once again got to hear that she's a Mexican-Irish-Non-Binary-Bisexual. And then the awful, awful scene with her shotgunning Miranda. Fuuuuuck! Who thought that was a good idea. That was about as sexy as a bout of piles!

Anthony was fabulous though. He was never my favourite character before. But he absolutely is (for) now.
