And just like that - females squeamish at male public masturbation

Has anyone watched the new Sex and the City show yet? I got really annoyed and switched off. Carrie is on a podcast, lots of chat about cis het. Whatevs.

But what really made me furious was when the male podcast guest said he couldn’t think of anywhere where he hadn’t masturbated in public. And Carrie said she hadn’t and they laughed at her like she was such a prude. I suppose it was trying to show how behind the times she is. I suppose she didn’t want to “kink shame” .

When did it become ok for men to masturbate in public?

Yes I know it’s a shit show BTW.

Sorry to revive an old(ish) thread but this made me laugh and all I know about the show is what I've read here

Episode 1 parody with Jimmie Fowlie

It was just a cringefest in Carries apartment tonight. No one does that when their friend is sick in bed! I thought Harry and Charlotte where very good though.

EachandEveryone · 24/12/2021 13:05

Well carrie is back in the ciggies now and Im kind of glad as it reminds me of when it was good. I wonder if shes a smoker in real life it looked so realistic 😃

SantaClawsServiette · 24/12/2021 00:28

Is it just me, or is casual pot smoking more common on tv than it was? What is it supposed to mean?

I find it funny that smoking cigarettes is out but weed is cool.

GCAndProud · 23/12/2021 08:04

I find it funny too. So so true.

I actually find this very funny!

That woke bingo is a bit shit. There has only been 3 episodes on and there are 25 'bingo' squares on it. Its just a bitesize breakdown of each episode really. You could do that with anything.

Whilst I will admit, it's not great and some parts are problematic, I do find it watchable.

Just been thinking about the Chris Noth thing with several women coming out of the woodwork and calling him a predator. I believe them and one of the women talks about how he was notorious for it when she worked in a bar he owned and also on some sets. Basically I don’t think it’s the sort of thing that would go unnoticed by his co-stars this whole time. No doubt it was an open secret like Harvey Weinstein. I’m just wondering about SJP, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis releasing that statement. I find it quite hard to believe that they had no inkling of the rumours yet SJP as a producer obviously went on working with him but then releases this when she realises that standing by him isn’t going to help her image. I may be being overly cynical about it all but it bothers me.

Yes, Stanford and Anthony would never have got together.
But then there are very few characters in satc that ended up in relationships I would consider fulfilling and healthy.
From what I recall Stanford's only other relationship was with Marcus the male model, who was seen as a power play and generally ridiculed by the other characters.
Steve and Miranda were incompatible in so many ways and I hated how they justified his cheating by saying she'd let herself go.
Carrie and Big, just awful. Aiden was nice, but put up with way too much from Carrie.
Trey, clueless but not uncaring. Steamrollered into marriage by Charlotte and then his ed made to seem like her fault.
Samantha and Richard, obviously toxic. Samantha and Maria and Smith had a sell by date because she wouldn't let herself be monogamous after that. Which was a bit of a shame as the character stopped growing.
But at least she didn't go backwards like Carrie and co.

Wanderingowl · 21/12/2021 11:44

Is Anthony still married to Stanford (I know the actor died, but not how they explained his absence) if they're not together, I imagine that Anthony might fall for a trans man. They like pushing that Anthony is superficial, and needs to overcome it, so that'd fit with past interpretation of the character. Except obviously not. Because he's gay.
Stanford is still in it but I have read that ep3 was the last one he filmed. Tbh, Anthony and Stanford being married was the first big WTAF moment of the franchise. Anthony and Stanford did not like each other at all. Not in a 'hate but really sexual tension' kind of tv trope way. They just did not hit it off and Anthony was contemptuous of the idea of dating Stanford. And the both made it clear to Carrie and Charlotte that just because they were both gay and single didn't mean they would be attracted to each other or even have any interest in being friends.

Then came the movies, and what do you know. They are in love and getting married. With Liza Minelli, natch! I get actually really angry thinking about it.

Old satc would have done, or at least sought to cover the issue in a less black and white way.
I can't see them doing anything other than total affirmation, otherwise Nixon will think it is a comment on their parenting. Anthony is just there to be 'educated'.

Kotatsu · 21/12/2021 10:59

There's still little rays of stuff though - Charlotte's friend at the sour dough place having no truck with it, Che (who is insufferable) saying at the end of the special that if she had a penis she'd have got it 5 years early.

I feel like I'm being taunted that there could be a big reveal of people actually being sensible (yes, I know it's SATC, but still)

Franca123 · 20/12/2021 11:10

I can't watch anymore. But I am curious to know whether Charlotte's daughter, sorry, son, will take the drugs and get the surgery.

Franca123 · 20/12/2021 11:04

Tried episode three out of morbid curiosity. Jokes about sex with minors. Really feels like they're trying to re-engineer my boundaries in order to normalise paedophilea. Really made me queasy. Why do women collude with this stuff? Surely that 'Che' character or SJP don't want sex with children! Incidentally, I don't think a character has ever given me the rage like that 'Che' whatever has. Absolute rage. Smug condescending c-word.

Fuck, I just saw this on Twitter: twitter.com/anonacademic_uk/status/1471497994335768578?s=21

Seems all predictions were correct re the trans kid.

I love the commentary in that Twitter though Grin
GoodieMoomin · 20/12/2021 09:06

Not sure if this was already posted but I was surprised to see it in the (usually terrible) Independent: "While Sex and the City celebrated women’s voices, And Just Like That seeks to silence them"

SO the people of the past must be wrong in some way?

That’s very interesting. I’ve often noticed they seem to be in a fight with strawman versions of the past. The one that stands out is Ash Sarkar Tweeting about how trench warfare is bad, actually, in Remembrance Day. As if the Siegfried Sassoon perspective was a new revelation.

But they do it all the time in less memorably egregious ways. I guess it’s hard to deny that “wokeness” is part of the Establishment now, so true believers are having to explain to themselves why it’s not actually making life better - and their way of dealing with that is by making the past out to be worse than it is.

SantaClawsServiette · 19/12/2021 20:39

Maybe it is because of the progressive commitment to the idea that history is leading to some free utopian end? SO the people of the past must be wrong in some way?

SantaClawsServiette · 19/12/2021 20:27

@CheeseMmmm

It's all spoon fed, background and characters established though linking to standard film stereotypes. Not script, not acting (they aren't given the opportunity to do so). All about visuals and action not the actual character, iyswim.

Constant heavy handed messaging. Done well you shouldn't notice it. Done well it should be subtle, nuanced, you only see it if you look for it.

now?
BAM! environment! Stop animal cruelty! Rainforests! Gay person! Etc.

This is NOT the best approach in any way shape or form.

And when not delivering MESSAGES everyone is killing everyone casually and constantly.

Yay!

Fucking appalling.

But then I am the right age to moan things were better in my day!

Yeah, I totally agree with this. I watched The Rise of Skywalker and right after the original Star Wars. Both popular fiction, very much genre pieces directed to a wide audience.

But Star Wars had so so much more talking. And storytelling.

But there is something about this desire to make the old, established characters into people who have the exact opposite qualities of what we admired about them. I think it may be a nihilistic impulse. No one is really good, no one has any real nobility.

DuckDuckNo · 18/12/2021 23:01

I saw some interviews of the main cast. They were taped around the same time the show was filmed and yet the cast looked 10 years younger. Why is the show overdoing their age?

Grimbelina · 18/12/2021 22:54

I have watched three episodes and can't watch anymore. It actually left me profoundly depressed. In the original series the woman felt centred in the drama, now I just feel the hands of writers using the characters to make a series of ageist and woke points. The characters are so 2 dimensional, puppets, the clothes like dressing up clothes. It doesn't allow them any dignity somehow. I am shocked the actors signed up to the scripts frankly. The hole left by Samantha feels like a chasm when there is nothing good to fill it.

This could have been such an interesting show which showed the complexities of their lives, ageing etc. but this is not it.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 18/12/2021 19:48

balked at Che's suggestion that Carrie will get labelled as "the boring vanilla cis het married lady" or words to that effect. Gosh, what a terrible thing to be! There did seem to be a bit of pushback from Carrie and Miranda on this, but it's hard to tell if there is any criticism of the new woke "sex positivity" or if they are just going to be shown to be out of touch old women. So far I'm not impressed. It all feels a bit sexist and ageist, actually.

///// Absolutely this.

The podcast lady and chaps "banter' actually reminded me of Ira and the Douche in Parks and Recreation, only less subtle Confused

Snoozer11 · 18/12/2021 18:37

I used to listen to a Buffy the Vampire Slayer podcast on Spotify, led by two gay men who claim to analyse it from a "feminist and queer perspective".

The puerile "wokeness" made me switch off.

They once spoke of a fantasy character in a TV show that wasn't buffy, who was played by a woman and generally meant to be female. They wouldn't refer to her as "she" simply because this character's pronouns had never been explicitly stated.

The refer to JKR as "trash" and her having awful feminism, the "wrong kind of feminism" etc etc. And five minutes later, they're discussing the misogyny of Whedon and the villains of the show.

It's mind blowing that two men seem to think they can dictate the correct way to do feminism. Their immaturity and lack of self awareness shines through.
