Just a heads up if anyone is interested. Includes Profs. Jo Phoenix and Rosa Freedman.

I was struck by the reactions of the punters at the trade fair, which seemed solidly “is this marketable/on brand” rather than “wtf is this nonsense” or even a more circumspect “what are the ethical/logistical ramifications of running a company where grammar needs to be tailored to individuals feelings”.

Cailin66 · 03/12/2021 08:50

@MynameisWa

Please don’t slate the medium that is giving you the freedom to express your opinions. Gb news from what I see is willing to accommodate a broad range of viewpoints that otherwise wouldn't get aired. But everyone who goes on it does a little speech to justify themselves first. I think they deserve more than that.
I'd imagine Jo was taken in by the Spin on GB News initially. Certainly I was. I think a lot of the media were very hostile to them and it put a lot of people off. That's because the other channels don't want competition. Anything that is getting across our views has to be a good thing. Plus as you've said accommodating a range of viewpoints is very important. Up to now all the rest of the media have been full on trans rights and painted us women in a negative way.
Rightsraptor · 03/12/2021 08:48

I do hope it pops up later on All4, I missed the first 10 mins. On the whole I thought it very good and we were allowed to see some woke idiocy in its full glory, as pp have said the juxtaposition of Jo Phoenix's speech about child exploitation with screaming banshee outside spoke volumes.

I loved the trade fair with the DIE organisation. One toilet for each sexual orientation? How did those 2 actors keep straight faces?

Signalbox · 03/12/2021 08:46

@JoodyBlue

Still appears to be unavailable to view on All4 :(
Yes... Stuff usually becomes available quite quickly on all 4. Hopefully not cancelled!
highame · 03/12/2021 08:38

PostgradGC loved your post especially
There is a growing grievance amongst my PG cohort about being taught "right think" rather than taught "to think" when questions are so obviously loaded with the "right" answer or prefaced by "contexts" that stifle discussion (not just on this issue but wider political/sociological/cultural/economic topics).
and

There is a shift taking place. We (the previously silent majority on my PG course) are starting to speak up, to challenge and thanks to Maya know we can't be discriminated against.

@FrancescaContini

I’ll be watching this on All4 - thank you! My entertainment for the weekend!
Is it on All4 now? I looked a bit earlier and it still wasn't up. Wishing I'd recorded it now, but I've got out of the habit of doing that as most programmes are available on catch up.
ProfJoPhoenix · 03/12/2021 08:19

@Mollyollydolly

Watching 'Cancelled' it's ok up to now .. And Jo don't apologise for going on with Andrew Doyle, GB News or not, he's great. Look forward to watching it.
Quite right. Quite right.

Please see other messages above (or below - I haven't figured out how this thread stuff works).

As I said below. I apologise. I was immoderate. Andrew Doyle has been a real champion. Please see my comments below.

Yesterday was a tough day and you are very right! GB News is airing more points of view than The Guardian, let's face it.

ProfJoPhoenix · 03/12/2021 08:16

@PostGradGC

@ProfJoPhoenix you should have no fear in watching this.

The juxtaposition between clips of your speech and the angry, threatening demonstration outside was very powerful.

Have NC'd for this post and it's sad I feel the need to do so.

On the positive side I'm a mature PG in an RG Uni and whilst I'm still careful about what I say in "public" re: gender ideology there are many, many of us PG's who are talking in friendship/seminar groups and finding that contrary to what we expected the majority are gender critical.

What happened to Prof Stock was a gateway into discussions that allowed many of us express our disgust about how she was treated (on a "neutral" freedom of academic speech basis) to then be open about our GC standpoint.

Ironically, at my Uni faculty, the most ardent trans ideology evangelists are some of the academics someone is making a lot of money from rainbow/pink and blue lanyards, badges, face masks and scarfs.

There is a growing grievance amongst my PG cohort about being taught "right think" rather than taught "to think" when questions are so obviously loaded with the "right" answer or prefaced by "contexts" that stifle discussion (not just on this issue but wider political/sociological/cultural/economic topics).

Apologies for the long post and if you have got this far, thank you.

To you, Rosa and Kathleen Thanks

Students are listening and it's absolutely true that "courage calls to courage everywhere" especially on campus.

Thank you. I LOVE the trick of palimpsest. I might have to use that occasionally. Please let me know if there is anything I can do.

ProfJoPhoenix · 03/12/2021 08:14

@GrandmaMazur

Richard Bacon did say something at one point about both sides being as bad as each other which I thought was odd after we’d just been shown the calm speeches of the GC women on one side and the death threats against JKR and the TRAs screaming obscenities in women’s faces outside the Women’s Place meeting on the other side.
I have only ever heard the 'hurt on both sides' argument in two places:
  1. Once by Trump when a deranged man drove a car into a crowd of protesters
  2. By the VC at The Open University in his statement about the establishment of the OUGCRN.

I'm saying nothing.

ProfJoPhoenix · 03/12/2021 08:12

@BitMuch

I love Free Speech Nation! Will be great to see you on TV. Looking forward to the update on your case. The GC 'OU Inconvenient Feminists Club' has been officially approved by the OUSA which is a small step forward. It is a shame they wouldn't let it be called the OU Gender Critical Feminist Club because they said the term 'Gender Critical' was too inflammatory.
Going through these messages today. I love the support shown. Thank you everyone.

I also need to apologise for saying not my favourite - that was NOT in relation to Andrew Doyle. Academics get a lot of stick for where they appear and only yesterday morning I watched a young academic whose message is VERY important receive pressure from some of my contemporaries (i.e. academics of my age) for appearing on GMB News.

Please also watch twitter today. Yesterday was a particularly tough day for me and I made a few mistakes in messaging.

I would not want to offend any of my supporters. We all agreed on the issues at stake and I need to remember that we will also have a lot of quite different views on other issues.

I had trouble accessing it from my phone live last night and now the website is saying ‘no episodes available on catch-up’. Does anyone know does it normally take 24hrs or so to appear, or does some content not go on catch-up at all?

@rabbitwoman

I am looking for it on All4, but it says it is not available.

Has it...... Been cancelled?

Also, was Richard bacon any good? I remember when he was cancelled. And he once retweeted me.

He was good, let people speak, didn't;t show any bias, I used to really like him on 5live. I think he's making a fortune now coming up with quiz show formats in the states.
RedToothBrush · 02/12/2021 23:22

I watched it with DH and that was interesting in itself.

He commented on the anime everywhere... Which is relevant to my family.

He was shocked at screaming transwomen and unimpressed at ashleigh.

I managed to keep a straight face and not say 'have you actually listened to half of what I've said for the past 10 years?'

Still. Its progress.

Rummikub · 02/12/2021 23:22

It’ll be on plus one now

You annoying vipers....

I was planning a relaxing evening watching escape to the château with a glass of Wineand instead I'm watching this and wasting said Winewith every snort that I seemingly can't control in the face people talking ideological bollocks.
