@BaronessEllarawrosaurus obviously pulling your child out of something that benefits her is not an option. Could or would you raise this as a concern, though?

@wiltonian

I've written to them anyway. One thing I raised and would be interested if anyone else knows the answer, is how their inclusion policy for trans works with Guides from Muslim or Orthodox Jewish backgrounds, where they would not be allowed to be in a group with boys.
I’ve often wondered this.

No DD at GG but I’d be pulling her out immediately if so.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 23/11/2021 16:07

I'm torn. I hate what is going on in GG but my dd gets so much out of it and loves it plus the leaders I've known for years and have full trust in them, I wouldn't let my dd go on a camp because of this but I don't really want to pull her out then again am I doing harm overall by not pulling her out and saying I won't accept this. I really don't know what is best.

@MNFHD

Do we have to wait for something terrible to happen and the old chestnut. "Lessons have been learned" !
Sadly it looks as if we do have to wait. Although when the NSPCC had a dodgy staff member found posting photos of them exploring their fetish all over the internet, they did eventually remember that they're a child safeguarding charity and stopped calling everyone complaining bigots (and quietly sacked the individual). We can only hope that GG will eventually remember their core purpose and prioritise the wellbeing and safety of the girls they work with rather than this person. But I'm not holding my breath.
ANewCreation · 23/11/2021 15:57

What is all this safeguarding training for? Because it isn't working.

This individual displays multiple red flags in terms of what they think appropriate to post online.

Their gender identity is irrelevant - the fact that they are male statistically increases their risk of offending behaviour.

Safeguarding frameworks are there to protect children and vulnerable adults. GG, by appointing this individual and by seeking to obfuscate their appointment, have demonstrated that their safeguarding frameworks are not fit for purpose and have failed in this instance.

Artichokeleaves · 23/11/2021 15:22

It is hard not to remember another individual who worked extensively with the Scouting movement, was known in the community as a bit of an odd bod, liked taking pictures of themselves with guns, and in the end used them. It all rumbled on for years, and it was only after a disaster that people mumbled about well yes, probably something should have been done.

Honestly, how stupid do people have to be before they wake up to what they are enabling? Let's be specific. How stupidly naiive and unwilling to judge do women have to be before they realise. What is all this safeguarding training for? Because it isn't working.

MNFHD · 23/11/2021 15:00

Remove your child. The world (especially the UK) has gone raving bonkers!

Ttoomany · 23/11/2021 14:57

If those photos get into the press, it'll cause massive reputational damage, surely? It's quite incredible.

Scraggythang · 23/11/2021 14:56

@GatoradeMeBitch and the media would eat them for breakfast.

I have sent this!
Hi,

I a writing as a concerned parent regarding the recent appointment Monica Sulley, a male who identifies as a woman, who became the lead Commissioner for the Southwell division of Girl Guides U.K.
The social media posts Sulley has made recently I think fly in the face of the GG volunteer code of conduct- "Be a good role model with behaviour and an attitude that are in line with our values and the Promise" I do not think an individual posing in fetish wear and using guns and ammunition is a good role model for girl guides and I am at a loss as to why such a person holds this position within the GG institution. Can you explain? It looks and feels like GG looking to be inclusive and woke, and instead it is putting girls at significant risk of harm being influenced by Sulley who has further shown unsafe behaviours in their support of Amy Channelor when in 2018, Monica Sulley signed his name to a letter penned by Aimee Challenor – a trans-identified male who is best known for hiring his father into a public role within the Green Party despite him having been convicted of raping and torturing a 10 year old girl. Challenor is in a polyamorous relationship with a man who admitted to sexual fantasies about children, and another trans-identified male who has an adult baby fetish.
I am concerned that the safety of girls is being put at risk, and that Sulley is in this position. If she had not posted her fetish all over social media, and did not hold a public position for a charity, this would be a non issue. However, she has and must be held accountable, as well as being relieved of their volunteer duties when it clearly contravenes your own Code of Conduct.

GatoradeMeBitch · 23/11/2021 14:41

A biological woman would have lost her position at lightning speed on the discovery of a social media account like this...

Spottybluepyjamas · 23/11/2021 14:40

I don't think complaining to GG will do anything. I think a concerned email to our MPs, and maybe writing to the Times/Daily Mail, both of whom haven't shied away from the Trans debate. Keep it factual and to safeguarding concerns to help the case not be dismissed as 'scaremongering', 'pearl-clutching' and 'anti-trans'

foxgoosefinch · 23/11/2021 14:39

One of the pictures on social media was of this person dressed in a leather dominatrix outfit with a cane/riding crop, referring to themself as a “mistress”.

Given the history of the pornographic dominatrix “mistress”/teacher vs schoolgirl/schoolboy trope, how can anyone think this is appropriate for someone working with 10-14 year old girls?

“Mistress” BDSM roleplaying and gun play displayed on public media. GG think this is all right?!

Helleofabore · 23/11/2021 14:33
@KaleKebab - a GG leader has posted here somewhere that they cannot take the girls to laserquest because no guns is GGUK's policy. So photos such as this person posing with a massive fuck-off gun, even if a replica or 'toy', must be out of bounds. And if not, why not?
I think you will find it is not a 'no guns' policy. But a policy regarding what the gun is pointing at.

Our local guides and scouts both go rifle shooting at paper targets at an indoor rifle range.

The issue with this person is how they are handling guns and posing with them etc. Not that they own guns, or that they shoot.

KaleKebab · 23/11/2021 14:31

(also - seems pretty naff to be posing with [assumed] Airsoft guns in GG uniform. Thanks for letting me know that was the uniform featured)

KaleKebab · 23/11/2021 14:29

I absolutely don't claim to be an expert on GG and what they do/don't allow - my DD is too young for that sort of thing.

I was just aiming to provide context as to what the photo the GG leader with a firearm >may< be, for those unfamiliar with Airsoft. The point I was trying to make is that it could easily be more innocuous than 'maniac posing with real rifles', which is what the photo could appear to be.

On @VelvetChairGirl's point - I kind of agree and kind of don't. For example, DH has photos of him posed with his kit. Admittedly they taken because he was posing for art to be featured in board game, but downloaded from his DropBox and stripped of context you may assume he's unhinged!

FWVLIW, I agree with the broader points being made. I just wanted to say there may be more nuance to the detail than the most extreme possible readings one could make of those photos.

averylongtimeago · 23/11/2021 14:27

The previous poster was right, we are allowed to do target shooting in Guides, but only as long as the target is human or animal shaped.

4 & 57-62 are these relevant?

Someone posting sexualised pictures/comments combined with charities legal safeguarding duty?

I’m so upset by this thread. I keep refreshing it and I’ve got nothing to say. I don’t even know what I’m allowed to say. The part where they know about the issue and all they’ve done is hide information on their website!

Adult males who openly post fetish material on their social media, intermingled with photos of the kids they’re volunteering with, shouldn’t be volunteering with kids.

Rightsraptor · 23/11/2021 14:21

It was written by a feminist in an ironic way. As in they are giving us so much ammunition it’s unbelievable!

But I’ve seen a few TRA denials of their own in the twitter pit.
@QueenSue there was an article recently listing various batshit crazy stuff that’s happened and ironically asking whether the Terfs had planted these individuals to strengthen our position because you couldn’t make it up! That came to mind when I read this. I’ll try and find the article.
Oh yes, that miniscule minority of Terfs who are irrelevant, don't know what they are talking about and yet somehow manage to infiltrate and plant people in various places to strengthen our position, couldn't possibly be that our warnings were right, could it.

The lengths and depths some will go to to deny what is in front of their eyes never ceases to amaze me.
