He's come out as saying that he regrets taking the part of Lili Elbe in the Danish Girl, as he thinks it should have gone to a trans actor.

That's another issue, surely it's called 'acting' Eddie?

He has affirmed that TWAW and they 'just want to live their lives out peacefully and it's time to allow them to do so'.

So no-ones being harassed out of their jobs then Eddie? Children aren't being medicalised? Women aren't being told to shut up and be kind, and allow men into their safe and private spaces?

What makes a bloke like Eddie think he has any right to an opinion in something that does not affect him, just because he put on a dress and some lipstick for a role that he now regrets?

The film wouldn’t have gotten made though. Eddie is a ‘name’ and the funding will have come through on the basis of that. There are no trans actors who bring in enough of a following and money with them.
It’s all very well saying who else should have been cast, but there are economic reasons for casting, it’s why Andi McDowall was in 4 Weddings, she brought the money, but wasn’t right.

ScrollingLeaves · 22/11/2021 16:33

I have just been looking up the real Lili Elbe and it seems possible she was someone who was born with a DSD - she was found to have shrunken ovaries in one operation. Apparently there is a rate DSD where a person, usually female, has both testicular and ovarian tissue. Lili Elbe might have been female from the start. Apparently even as a man she was taken as a girl dressed as a man.

So a trans woman may not necessarily be right for the part.

GreyhoundG1rl · 22/11/2021 16:07

BUT wouldn't this also mean that trans actors would not be allowed to play non trans parts? I bet it doesn't mean that....
No, you can bloody bet it doesn't...

“Ghostsintheshelf

At least we know he wasn't appropriating when he he took the part of hypocritical, sexist Angel Clare in Tess of the d'Urbervilles.“

Yes smug, self- righteous Angel Clare.

He is evidently doing the amalgamated trans fender plus Critical Race Theory intersectional pick me dance. White actors shouldn’t black up for Othello…. so a an actor shouldn’t pretend to be transgender man transitioning to be a woman.

But it would be ok for a man to say he is in fact a woman.

WomenTalkingAboutARevolution · 22/11/2021 15:07

He should regret taking part in a movie that romanticises the murder of one possibly two women to supply Elbe with ovaries, Fallopian tubes and a uterus*

Why do men never ever wonder what happened to the women whose organs were harvested for Elbe?

  • At the time transplants were from living individuals and one assumes they used women with viable reproductive systems. Also at the time most women died from hysterectomies and they were usually carried out without anaesthetic It was also recognised in this time period that healthy ovaries should not be removed from women except as a (very) last resort for disease as they are necessary for healthy functioning of female bodies

@rabbitwoman

As a even further aside, it does irritate the heck out of me that the Cheery character is being held up as a trans icon. Nowhere in the books does it say or even imply that Cheery considered herelf a male dwarf and then decided or realised she was female when she moved to AM. All she did was start wearng some things that were culturally worn by human females but considered inappropriate by the dwarf community.

..... Even more off to the side, I would not have minded the 2021 ideas so much if it hadn't turned out to be such a mangling of a fine piece of writing.....

And did you notice, it was ALWAYS cheery who saved the day? Hmmmm.....

....off in the far distance and merely waving at the original thread....

A friend who is also a TP fan watched The Watch before I did and said to see it as 'inspired by' TP's novels rather than expecting a direct adaptation, which I thought was good advice. I got a bit bored of it towards the end tbh, but I think I was finding it hard work to not be comparing the characters, plot and sequence of events to the books the whole time, so didn't really clock that Cheery was the hero.

LaetitiaASD · 22/11/2021 14:49

@LadyCampanulaTottington

It's called acting. People pretending to be people they're not.

Not that difficult is it, Eddie?

Interesting... is Redmayne saying that people should not pretend to be something they're not, even when they are literally acting, which is the literal job of pretending to be something they're not?

If even actors shoudn't pretend to be something that they're not, then how on earth is it OK for normal men on the street to pretend to be something they're not? Surely that much be much worse than what Redmayne did?

LobsterNapkin · 22/11/2021 14:38

It's stupid, but it's the logical conclusion of tying acting to identity characteristics in other areas like race, along with the concept of cultural appropriation.

As soon as you do it with one identity area it logically follows that others are problematic too.

Eyesofdisarray · 22/11/2021 14:04

He should have thought of that before he took the part
Maybe someone has got to him? Or has he decided to be kind now?

Piss off, Eddie

Exactly! Smile ( Mumnet truism: when a man shows you who he really is... )
HoardingSamphireSaurus · 22/11/2021 13:43

Or a transman, maybe!?

OneEpisode · 22/11/2021 13:41

But I think I am gender-variant? Most of what I am wearing today (wfh) is clothes my son has outgrown. Pretty much everything except pants and bra. So am I a transwoman?

JustcameoutGC · 22/11/2021 13:40

Fine, let the gobby faced arse play posh twats for ever more. There should be more than enough to keep him busy.

HoardingSamphireSaurus · 22/11/2021 13:38

@OneEpisode

The Cheery character is played by Jo Eaton-Kent. Jo is not a transwoman. Jo is non-binary. And enormous. 6 foot. Much bulkier than the actor playing Carrot, who is “dwarfed” as a result.
Sorry, @OneEpisode. According to Stonewalls umbrella making that distinction makes you transphobic!

Crazy, but that's how it goes, acoding to Stonewall!

Trans people may describe themselves using one or more of a wide variety of terms, including (but not limited to) transgender, transsexual, gender-queer (GQ), gender-fluid, non-binary, gender-variant, crossdresser, genderless, agender, nongender, third gender, bi-gender, trans man, trans woman,trans masculine, trans feminine and neutrois

@Brainwave89

Lot of quite harsh opinions here. I thought the film was very well acted. It is a legitimate view for Eddie to say that the role should have gone to a trans actor- as it was legitimate for Russell T Davies to argue that only gay people should be involved in his series Its a Sin. I personally do not agree, but I understand the sentiment as I do when able bodied people have played disabled roles. I am both supportive of trans rights, and the rights of women. We need to get to a point where we look beyond a very small number of areas where we need women only spaces and be more human and welcoming.
Surely the whole point of acting is pretending to be something you are not? What if gay actors don't want to only play gay roles, are they then not allowed to play straight roles? Or is it only straight actors who should stay in their lane? Surely your sexuality in real life shouldn't matter when you are playing a character.

Also: We need to get to a point where we look beyond a very small number of areas where we need women only spaces and be more human and welcoming. This is so patronising. Women are always expected to 'be kind', move over, make room, cowtow.... No. No it is not OK for us to have to give up single sex spaces just because you have decided on behalf of all of us that they don't matter.

Also - 'more human and welcoming' - do you say that to the TRAs throwing rape and death threats at women who object? Didn't think so.

viques · 22/11/2021 13:21

So extrapolating Eddie’s Eton trained logic trans actors should only play roles in which highlighting their trans status is an integral part of the plot. Since most actors find it hard enough to get work at the best of times it seems a bit mean to say to starving trans actors “sorry darling, just no parts about being trans at the moment, but I can put you forward for an audition as a children’s live action cartoon thingy in a gender neutral all in one outfit where no one will have the foggiest what your pronouns are.”

Think about it for a minute Eddie, black actors are just beginning to break through with colour blind casting, disabled actors are pushing for inclusion and for casting directors to see beyond the disability, female actors are taking traditional male roles eg Hamlet. The job is called acting. Not only can trans actors probably cope with playing non trans roles but hey! non trans actors can play trans characters. By your pointless attempt at being woke you are ignoring the push that other less well connected actors have been campaigning for for years.

Double3xposure · 22/11/2021 13:08

Out of interest, do you include the men who work in women's prisons in this?

Are you asking me if the men who work in women’s prisons should be allowed to rape and sexually assault them?

This might be a fun “ out of interest “ banter type question to you but it’s the REAL LIVES of real women who are actually fully human.

I find the way that sone people disregard and despite these women quite chilling.

BraveBananaBadge · 22/11/2021 13:00

@RoyalCorgi

I don't know if people read the rest of the Sunday Times interview, but it was mostly about his new role as the emcee in a stage production of Cabaret. It also quotes his co-star Jessie Buckley as saying how lovely and welcoming it was that everyone in the cast introduced themselves with their pronouns.
I saw the thread the Times put on Twitter and that was enough. Apparently he's getting stick because Emcee is often considered a role for an LGBT actor so guess he's got to appear suitably chastened.

Cabaret is one of my favourite films and shows but sounds like the pronoun-happy brigade can have this version.

weverly · 22/11/2021 12:58

@Double3xposure

What about the right of women in prison not to be locked up with penis havers who rape and sexually assault them?

Is that human right or should they give that right up to a higher class of humans ?

Oh no, wait ..they already have.

Cordyceps · 22/11/2021 12:53

Many posters on this thread remind me of people who respond to a Black actor playing a historical role (like recently when a Black woman played Anne Boleyn) by saying something along the lines of "imagine if a WHITE man played MLK Jr!" as if everything including racial justice and fairness always works exactly the same in reverse. It's childish and it lacks nuance.

Double3xposure · 22/11/2021 12:38

What about the right of children to live their lives without adults telling them that their perfectly healthy bodies are defective and they need corrected by mutilating, painful and irreversible surgery which will make them infertile and seriously jeopardise their chance of having a fulfilling sexual relationship as adults.

Do children have that right ? Oh no wait, that’s already been taken away from them.
