So, the Hogwarts turncoats are getting back together, sans Rowling.

They have a brass neck, that's for sure.

Happy to ring every last penny they can out of the franchise whilst continuing to sell Rowling down the river.

Zero moral compass between them. Either they back Rowling, and thank her for the fact anyone other than their mum knows they exist, or they renounce and walk away. You dont get to have it both ways.

*WARNING POTENTIAL SPOILERS
PP is referring to the casting of a black woman as Hermione in the HP play. + her daughter as black.
Which would have been great if the rest of the cast was diverse - or at least looked nothing like their movie counterparts.

However
a) Those two were the ONLY ones out of the original cast to have been 'diversified'. Everybody else was made to follow the books meticulously. Down to the Weasley siblings' red haired and Draco's blonde they were clearly recognisable even without their names being said. Why single out Hermione who was the main female lead?

b) There was plenty of opportunity to write in a black character. One of the two leads - Draco's son, whose mother isn't in the books. Delphi, a girl of unknown parentage who later features heavily.

But no, these characters are too important to have a black person play them.

Instead Hermione who is
a) A supporting character in THIS play
b) White (she has bushy brown hair)
c) A well established character whom the majority of people know from the movies

is blackwashed - and to make it 'add up' her daughter is also black, the irony.

It's tokenism and as a POC I find it rather disappointing. They had the chance to have a diverse cast with roles written for them but they blew it.

Arabella I’ve been waiting for at least two years for someone to explain to me the precise details of the robust diagnostic technique used to identify which are the 80-85% of children who will desist from gender confusion post-puberty and which are the 15-20% who will persist (since it would be highly unethical to subject any of the former to unnecessary medication which could have a life-changing impact on them) and still no advocate of puberty blockers has been able to do so, but perhaps you’ll have more joy in your vigil

Have a warming nightcap of your choice while you’re waiting.

@DdraigGoch

Nor did Helena Bonham Carter, or Gary Oldman, or Michael Gambon. Is it only the young actors who you believe should forever be in her debt who should fight her corner? Did any of the three adults you mention join in the lynch mob?

Robbie Coltrane on the other hand said to the Radio Times:

"I don't think what she said was offensive really."

"I don't know why but there's a whole Twitter generation of people who hang around waiting to be offended."

"That's me talking like a grumpy old man, but you just think, 'Oh, get over yourself'"

I don’t usually like "gotchas" as they often aren't or backfire but that's a splendid one !

I am heartened by that.

According to Twitter, it looks like Radcliffe’s redemption owes more to his publicist than to his conscience…

A cream tea vigil is one I can really get behind, by the way. I think we should have these more often. I mean, I can just keep going. If anyone wants to join me you are very welcome but you have to bring your own scones.

ArabellaScott · 19/11/2021 17:25

THATS MORE LIKE IT.

I mean, this is a vigil, not a hunger strike.

MN keeps going down - I keep thinking floods of people have logged on and are posting all the evidence of JKR's sins.

But - there is still nothing.

Love your persistence Arabella - I think we should probably all take you out to afternoon tea at the Ritz by day five. And I bet you still wont have a rational answer!

DdraigGoch · 19/11/2021 13:43

it's not like they can go back in time and turn the job down based on what they now know
@scarpa but what do they now know? Poor Arabella has been shivering out in the cold waiting for someone to tell us.

DdraigGoch · 19/11/2021 13:39

@ArabellaScott

I mean, not that I was there.

I'm not quite that old.

You are Perenelle Flamel and I claim my five livres.
ArabellaScott · 19/11/2021 11:04

That's very kind, FindTheTruth. What a lovely set. I notice the presence of 1. cake and 2. booze are somewhat lacking on that tray, though, if I may venture a small grumble.

Suffragists gotta suffer, I suppose.

Day three of my vigil.

And still, no quotes or evidence to show JK Rowling's 'bigotry'.

There’s an article in the Telegraph today saying much of what’s been said on this thread.

thirdfiddle · 19/11/2021 09:06

And you kind of have to imagine the actor does have bright green eyes, otherwise all those teachers staring into his going "you have your mother's eyes" seem a bit creepy!

thirdfiddle · 19/11/2021 09:02

Characters often change appearance and sometimes sex between page and screen or from production to production. All female Shakespeare for example. Or indeed, any female Shakespeare given the originals were acted by an all male cast. The occasional fictional character even changes sex in their own timeline - Orlando, Dr Who, various sci-fi. Clue's in the "fictional".
Two of the three main characters in HP weren't a good match to their book descriptions. Harry's supposed to have black sticking up hair and green eyes. Hermione's supposed to have frizzy hair and big teeth. I don't think skin colour generally gets mentioned in Rowling's writing. I thought Strike was at least mixed race from the way his hair was described. The only reason I ended up thinking he was white was Galbraith doesn't shy away from grubby realism and realistically he'd have come up against racism at some point if he wasn't.

Vanishun · 19/11/2021 07:47

Why did she even write about polyjuice if she didn't think people could transform into other people? Grin

NashvilleQueen · 19/11/2021 07:24

*btw, just thinking out loud here, how come she doesn't believe a man can turn into a woman but she's perfectly happy for a white person to turn black? (ie Hermione)

A race change is ok for JK Robert, but not sex.*

Changing race and changing sex are both entirely fictional constructs so perhaps your point isn't as strong as you think it is. Anything is possible in the imaginary world. The real world not so much. Sort of why literary fiction is so popular ...

CallMeNutribullet · 19/11/2021 07:06

@MargaritaPie

When you refer to “Ms K”, do you actually mean Ms R, eg JK Rowling?

Whatever she calls herself. Apparently she's also "Robert" for some reason.

Herminone's race isn't mentioned in the books. Not once. What she said is that given there's no description of race in the books, there's no reason why a black woman SHOULDN'T be cast in the play. A play she didn't do the casting for.
KimikosNightmare · 19/11/2021 01:01

That's precisely my point, though - you seem to be saying that because the 3 leads' careers started in the film adaptation of her books that they're not allowed to say that they disagree with her. Which I think is a weird thing to say, they don't owe her that when she was sharing a view they disagreed with

Er no I can't speak for others but that's not what I'm saying. I referred to their lack of any support for Rowling in the abuse she was receiving. I haven't said what you claim I've said.

You then, for reasons which escape me, started referring to Bonham Carter et al. I'm not aware of any of them rushing to condemn Rowling the way this trio did.

scarpa · 18/11/2021 22:42

@KimikosNightmare

Nor did Helena Bonham Carter, or Gary Oldman, or Michael Gambon. Is it only the young actors who you believe should forever be in her debt who should fight her corner?

Well all of them had prestigious careers long before Harry Potter. HP neither established nor defined their careers so not analogous at all.

And I don't recall any of them falling over themselves to weigh in about how much they supported trans rights and how wrong JKR was to say what she said.

A lot of comments in thread seem to be along the lines of "How DARE they, they owe her". And... no, they don't owe her that. If people on the thread dislike them because they think they're wrong, fine, but don't make out like the issue is that they're disloyal insubordinate kids.

Eek those tweets…..

She’s a slimy smug self righteous little fucker isn’t she?

That’s a lot to be embarrassed about later in life.
