Thanks for the share token, McDuffy. I was surprised that some BBC staff did not take well to hearing that they would be exposed to views they did not like. What were they taught on their journalism courses? Or on their induction programmes at the BBC?

Tim Davie knows the continuation of the licence fee is dependent on the BBC being seen as impartial. There are a lot of people in the current government, and some outside it, who would love to end the licence system. Even if they work in entertainment, rather than news, they should know this.

Thank you for token.

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 14/11/2021 09:40

from the Times article

A BBC journalist said: “Fran was totally calm but determined about it. She was reacting to questions from the network that implied people shouldn’t come across views they disliked. To me, it felt like she was having to explain journalism to idiots.”

Davie told LGBT staff he would listen to their views, that he was concerned by the idea that LGBT staff were leaving the corporation over its policies

if people who don't understand journalism and don't care about impartiality are leaving the BBC, that seems like a good thing no? regardless of what gender they identify as

Wow! This is fantastic. And how refreshing to hear for once that (since Wednesday's article was published) it feels that more conversations can be had.
I can almost hear the sigh of relief from the other side of the country!

highame · 14/11/2021 08:09

I liked this piece but it does highlight how much employees think they can dictate their political views in an organisation that is supposed to be impartial.

I wonder if all those threatening to leave, will actually leave and let the doors open for poor kids who will bring in a whole new view Grin.

I just checked out the INvolveUK site and I couldn't find any names of those involved apart from the founder, Suki Sandhu, who is a Stonewall ambassador according to this feature in We Are the City:

wearethecity.com/heforshe-suki-sandhu-ceo-founder-involve-audeliss/

Looks to me like a funkier less visible version of Stonewall. Wonder how many people in Stonewall/ formerly of Stonewall are Involved? It get the impression it's all very corporate and London-centric and it also seems to be flying well under the radar. I'm reminded of the Dentons advice about obtaining influence by quietly using business and political networks and cutting out the general public.

JessHopeThinks · 13/11/2021 13:48

Involve UK was discussed on the Nolan Show, sounds the same as Stonewall www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0b3k99s

Yep Angela rayner et al demonstrating with monotonous regularity why Labour won’t be governing anytime soon
Trans people facing a campaign of hate and discrimination
It's just a (really, really, stupid) tag line, isn't it?

Who is waging this campaign? How are trans people discriminated against?
If anything; they're the most pampered, elevated, lauded group in modern society; whose every whim is immediately granted.
And you still get bloody MP's spouting this utter shite 🤦‍♀️

Puzzledandpissedoff · 13/11/2021 09:23

Time to put the pressure on and hold the BBC accountable for all the stuff they put out when in the clutches of Stonewall

Good luck with that; since they've never been held properly accountable over their decisions around Savile I doubt any such pressure would make a difference

The BBC operate under an unusual "charter", but in effect they're in hock to the government who control the licence fee ... and governments appreciate having a mouthpiece which is conveniently taxpayer-funded

wonder if he'll ask her about this?

34Blueskies · 12/11/2021 16:24

No change to the Style Guide yet. It still defines homosexuality as homogenderism.
The Young Minds website says that it's very serious and illegal to tell a transwoman that they're not a woman. Which isn't true. They also define homosexuality as homogenderism.
Much be difficult to advise on things like sexually transmitted diseases and condoms when you refuse to acknowledge the existence of same sex attraction.

blairresignationjam · 12/11/2021 15:37

That's a relief

MrsJamin · 12/11/2021 14:44

Right. Time to put the pressure on and hold the BBC accountable for all the stuff they put out when in the clutches of Stonewall. Please can everyone complain about the fact that this programme www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p0559vr5/leo-becoming-a-trans-man containing many unchecked mistruths needs to be deleted from iPlayer. It takes 5 mins to fill this out www.bbc.co.uk/contact/complaints.

Gastonia · 12/11/2021 12:00

I think that's a bit misleading.

The article on 14 October says "mother" a lot - 7 times - rather than women. It doesn't say "people" at all.

The second article includes the words: "for the vast majority of people, pregnancy remains very safe in the UK" and
"[Birthrights] remained deeply concerned that black and brown people's .... in pregnancy"

That's quite the change! Would love to see if the style guide (or whatever it's called) has been updated.

Awful statistics re maternity deaths. How can this be happening in the 21st century in the UK?

Probably not actually looking for a lesbian, more to emphasise a woman not accompanied by a man.

GreyhoundG1rl · 11/11/2021 13:43

@Definitelydinosaur

Child of the sixties here, travelled alone on public transport from 9. (Normal in those days) Warned about drunk men, men who wanted you to get in their car, Old Firm matches, Orange walks...you can see where this is going. Advice was to look for a big lady if you needed help, butch lesbian was probably what my parents had in mind.
Why a lesbian, I wonder? I remember being advised to look for a woman with children.

I have no idea why it's difficult to say that some people are attracted to only one sex, others to one gender expression, others to both or all. I can see that some people may well be happy with either a female or an apparently female partner. Fine. It's the denial that others have an orientation based solely on sex that is so bizarre.

MistandMud · 11/11/2021 12:09

@ScreamingMeMe

The Young Minds website does the same.

Oh crap, really? I've supported Young Minds several times Sad

Young Minds do a lot of good. They are quite possibly compelled to stick to the line about homogenderism in order to be funded.
FloralBunting · 11/11/2021 11:51

@dolorsit

I was born early 70's, I can remember some media worries about gay men and children but I think this was mainly the fallout from PIE and the mistaken belief that men who assaulted boys were gay.

The only time I remember lesbians being described as predators was by men who were being dismissive of women needing female only spaces.

Lesbians as predators is on my bingo card from TRA men in particular who seem incapable of resisting this specific lie.

It usually stems from really old fashioned bigotry about lesbians as women who are trying to ape men, and betrays a view from the particular TRA that they actually know men are likely to be predatory, so in their mind lesbian = pretend men = predators.

They show their arse even when they're trying to hide it.

senua · 11/11/2021 10:42

Hurrah for the Beeb leaving Stonewall's scheme.

I'm not sure about Emma Barnett's attitude in that interview. I think that I would have given the BBC a small pat on the head and then asked 'what are next steps?' I don't think that sticking the boot in, when we are only on Day 2, is helpful.
I think that she went into journalistic attack-mode and wasn't really listening eg when he called coverage of TW in women's sport a 'hypothetical' EB didn't pick him up on that.
