Jess Phillips says no constituent has ever raised this issue with her?

So Jess says, in this live debate, this is not an issue which is ever raised by her constituents.... I find that hard to believe 🤷🏼‍♀️

Any constituents on MN?

Some women really, really want to believe that Jess Phillips is on their side and supporting them - but sadly she just isn't. She supports self ID. It's as clear as the most squeaky-clean, crystal-clear glass.
I find her working class Brummie ID quite funny. I've read about the family coming from Smethwick, Jess was born after they moved to a rather nice area of Birmingham in a nice big detached house, definitely not in Smethwick.

I remember it well and remember her mother berating me in the street when my son passed the 11 plus, 12 months later guess where her 11 year old son was going to school. Jess also went to a very selective girls grammar.

Makes me laugh to listen to her.

Masdintle · 05/11/2021 11:47

Like what, antonia?

PronounssheRa · 05/11/2021 11:47

@antoniawhite

Please, please don't vote Tory though because of this and because Labour are a mess. They have done so much damage, caused so many deaths and misery, and will cause more. There are other options.
What are the other options? I'm struggling to find them

@Datun Maybe that's why I never became an MP, it is really embarrassing at times and it isn't as if I don't care about it, I really try and people I'll see fairly regularly I make a conscious effort to keep their name in my mind but when it comes to it I frequently can't remember it.

You might laugh when I tell you my career was in HR, I could tell you dates when people started work, what their job was, I'd ask how their kids were doing in the GCSEs or A levels, if their house purchase was going through OK but I would struggle to know their name. Also hilariously I worked for a large police force for some years, I could tell you an officers collar number but not their name.

I wonder if there is a name for it? I googled it, suggestions were Alzheimers - I hope not and as I've been like it for as long as I can remember not likely. The 2nd suggestion was Anomic aphasia. Now if I could remember that I could tell people I have it but as I won't remember it I can't.

PronounssheRa · 05/11/2021 11:39

The thing is, Jess Phillips is an MP and is all about fighting for women's rights. It's her job. She should know.

Unless you are the wife of a man who is transitioning, she's not that supportive of them.

Jess Phillips says no constituent has ever raised this issue with her?
Lottapianos · 05/11/2021 11:39

'Itshould absolutely be on her radar. She should be raising it with them for fucks sake.'

Couldn't agree more. Is she seriously suggesting that her Muslim women constituents don't care who they might bump into in public toilets, or changing rooms, or who might be doing their smear or mammogram, or looking after them while they give birth? She's hoping this issue will just go away, same as Lammy, same as Starmer and all the rest of them. Shame on the lot of them, but she is the biggest disappointment. Lammy doesn't care and doesn't know his arse from his elbow on this issue but SHE DOES. And she's prepared to be a disingenuous hypocrite for the sake of her own career and profile. I'm sick of it

ShinyHappyPoster · 05/11/2021 11:38

Jess has been jumping about on this issue from the beginning. And I'm almost certain some constituents were on the webchat she did with MN when she wanted to be Labour leader and where she said TWAW and that she had been on the original group that suggested reforming the GRA.
Although if someone pulls her up, I guess she'll say that she was referring specifically to the issue of Kathleen Stock being hounded out of her job. Or she will say no-one has stopped her on the street about it and she didn't mean to imply she hasn't had questions on MN; emails from constituents; constituents contacting her on Twitter about it, etc.
She sits on a throne of lies.

ChristinaXYZ · 05/11/2021 11:35

@Langsdestiny

I dont think it was ignorant. I think it was deliberate. Or at the very least her sub conscious saying I dont give a shit about this.
Or she is frightened. I don't blame her for that. But she is still lying.
Datun · 05/11/2021 11:28

I know who Kathleen Stock is, but if you ask me her name in a couple of hours I probably couldn't tell you. I could tell you about her case but her name probably not. I'm bad with faces as well and even worse for men with beards which is unfortunate as my husband has one.

😁

ArabellaScott · 05/11/2021 11:24

@FloralBunting

I don't feel sorry for her. She stands on a platform of 'feminism' and makes quite the song and dance about reading out the names of murdered women, collected by other women for her to read, and then behaves like this when living women plead with her to address this issue?

She's a self-serving careerist who doesn't have the integrity to live up to her self-billing. She is performatively and deliberately dismissing it, because she knows that she doesn't have the courage of Duffield, and she doesn't want to be Kathleen Stock. I, and many other women, would be happy to stand with her if she did stand up, but she's not interested in that, because Brand Feminist Phillips is about what serves Phillips.

I'm not interested in supporting the career ambitions of self-centred women just because they're women. That'd be like calling Margaret Thatcher the first feminist prime minister. That's not how this works.

I'm afraid I agree.
digitalvertigo · 05/11/2021 11:23

Disappointed by Jess Phillips in this, as these talks are very engaging/nuanced, she could've discussed the issue in a less, to coin her, 'd*' way.
Using Yardley as a stick as if to say no-one 'normal' thinks about this issue is disingenuous aswell, as her working class constituents could be thrown under the bus at any moment by HR etc if they're unfortunate to come across any of these progressive 'luxury beliefs' in person and get any terminology wrong.
And perhaps they don't mention Kathleen Stock specifically, who knows, but I'm sure on the doorstep people signal discontent with how things are right now, political correctness and a stifling culture, which encompasses all these issues and people attach to Labour's politics, so it's very much her problem to confront and deal with!
Labour's an utter mess, Ella Whelan's great though.

CovidCorvid · 05/11/2021 11:22

I hope some of the people who know she's lying and can prove she is highlight this to the media.

EmpressaurusWitchDoesntBurn · 05/11/2021 11:20

And I'm sure Jess Phillips was bumped into by a mumsnetter a few years back and told them to keep going keep at it. She absolutely knows.

Yes. Shortly after she did a webchat here, another MNer & I went along to one of her book signings and I asked her about this directly. She signed my copy of the book something like ‘Keep fighting’.

TheMarzipanDildo · 05/11/2021 11:20

...and that is why I could never be a politician Grin

TheMarzipanDildo · 05/11/2021 11:19

I understand why Jess does this, but I don’t understand how. It would tear me up inside.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 05/11/2021 11:16

Maybe someone is filtering her emails?

Does this ever actually get checked? I strongly suspect that in many cases emails about women's rights simply don't get passed onto MPs. There are definitely young misogynistic men working in politics, and the simplest way to stop women's voices being heard is to simply filter them out before they do

I wonder if it would be possible to do a breakdown of email subject matter and which ones get passed on or responded to...

ChinstrapBobblehat · 05/11/2021 11:12

@YetAnotherSpartacus

"people" who have been raped. "people" who have been the victim of male violence "Katherine what's her name?" (Stock) Never been raised with her - never. Right. As well as asking if this is true it does sound like a challenge for those in Birmingham Yardley!
Aah, the ‘people’ substitution … on R4 yesterday there were two commentators (one M, one F) discussing the huge reduction in cervical cancer cases following the introduction of the HPV vaccine for girls. The female commentator did say the word ‘girls’ at least once, but otherwise for the entirety of the piece it was ‘people’. Not once was ‘woman’ or ‘women’ used. Yet the same somehow doesn’t seem to apply when discussing medical issues pertaining to men. Funny, that.

Oh, and Jess Phillips has never had any of this raised with her? My arse. She’s been proven a barefaced liar within the first two pages of this thread …

ancientgran · 05/11/2021 11:11

@Datun

That's at least two people on this very thread who have written, and also two canvassers who've been spoken to.

And I'm sure Jess Phillips was bumped into by a mumsnetter a few years back and told them to keep going keep at it. She absolutely knows.

And yes, of course it's a copout. She appears to be saying that as no one has raised it with her, it's either not important, or not on her radar.

It should absolutely be on her radar. She should be raising it with them for fucks sake.

The reason why this has blown up into such mammoth proportions is because it has been done on the sly. And when women find out, they are livid. Yet she seems to be calling it progressive? The complete erasure of women's rights?

That clip is awful. This air of being oh so sensible and down to earth about women's issues, but being entirely unaware of who Kathleen Stock even is? Despite the issue being splashed across the papers on a daily basis. If she doesn't know who Kathleen Stock is, it's unforgivable. And if she does know but pretends not to, it's worse.

That's a very damning piece of film, in my opinion. She's either completely ignorant about the situation, or she's pretending to be in order to minimise it.

And, as other people have been given the very strong impression that what she does is very deliberate, I'm going with the latter.

I know who Kathleen Stock is, but if you ask me her name in a couple of hours I probably couldn't tell you. I could tell you about her case but her name probably not. I'm bad with faces as well and even worse for men with beards which is unfortunate as my husband has one.

This in capital letters.
ancientgran · 05/11/2021 11:09

@Thingybob

Did she not mean that no constituent had specifically mentioned Kathleen Stock to her?

She is aware of Kathleen as she retweeted a link to the woman's hour interview the previous day

Quite possible, someone would have to ask her.

I do sympathise on the name thing, I have a total mental block with names, I can't even get my own kids right as they would tell you.

@Redshoeblueshoe

How can she not know who Kathleen Stock is ? I'm certain she will have received a copy of her book.
Sex Matters distributed copies of Helen Joyce's book (not Kathleen Stock's) to MPs etc. if that's the initiative that you had in mind.
rabbitwoman · 05/11/2021 10:52

I first contacted my MP about this issue during lockdown. As she was not doing surgeries i made a telephone appointment to speak with her - the first thing she said was that she was so glad to read my email. She had dreaded opening it when she saw the subject matter (Amendments to the GRA ACT) because anyone approaching her on this issue is usually very aggressive. She told me she had huge concerns about Mermaids and Stonewall; she was going to a parliamentary meeting on the GRA issue that week ; i told her about how i was concerned about students in the school i work in and she was very sympathetic and frankly, seemed to know what i was on about...... it definitely appeared to be a subject she had been approached about before. She definitely knew about it, and the key issues.

More recently, i wrote to her about the Helen Joyce book Trans, and i said:

'Despite what David Lammy said recently, this IS an issue that is coming up on the doorstep - i will be raising it with every politician that knocks on my door in the next round of elections, and i will not be voting for anyone who supports self ID, the experimental medicalisation of children or the erosion of women's safe spaces such as shelters, changing rooms, and our sports. I shall be asking each candidate where they stand on this issue.

The best prepared will have read this book and be ready to engage with the issues it raises. Here, you will learn that despite what David Lammy says, transwomen do not ever have cervixes. Despite what Dawn Butler says, rapists do not belong in female prisons. Keir Starmer has said he will introduce self ID - i will never vote for a labour candidate whilst this is on the table. I will vote for the candidate who supports Liz Truss and Baroness Nicholson.'

In her reply she said:

'You raise extremely valid and important points and I do agree. A construction that denies the existence of biological differences between the sexes has led many women to express serious and legitimate concerns about what it means for their dignity and – when it comes to single-sex spaces - their security. You may be aware that tackling violence against women and girls has been my priority since I entered Parliament and I will always champion women’s rights. Furthermore, expressing a view that women have cervixes is protected in law under Article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights and was confirmed by the Employment Appeal Tribunal in June. I don’t believe that this view is inconsistent with a commitment to trans people that they should be able to live freely, with respect and without discrimination. '

So, how come my MP - a young Tory woman MP - knows all about this issue, has obviously been approached by her constituents about this issue, and has what is obviously an informed opinion after having researched this issue, and Jess Philips doesn't?

How come people from my constituency are approaching our MP about this in obviously significant numbers, but not Jess Philip's constituents?

And i thought Jess was also supposed to be prioritising tackling violence against women and girls? How on Earth can she claim she does not know about this and her constituents aren't bothered?

It hurts me to say it, it really really hurts me - but i will be voting Tory for the first time ever at the next election.
