Jess Phillips says no constituent has ever raised this issue with her?

So Jess says, in this live debate, this is not an issue which is ever raised by her constituents.... I find that hard to believe 🤷🏼‍♀️

Any constituents on MN?

@IvyTwines2

I am also utterly fucked off by the way some people unthinkingly call this a 'progressive' issue. What's progressive about pushing children back into the sort of rigid sexist stereotypes my mother's generation fought to burst out of, and telling children who don't fit the behavioural template laid out by the pink and blue toyshop aisles, 'reality tv' and porn, they're nature's mistakes and need surgically fixing? Turning young people at the most vulnerable, impressionable age into lifelong dependants on big pharma and the surgery industry in pursuit of a Tumblr-induced fiction? What's progressive about stripping women and children of safe spaces in so many areas of our lives, and even our own language? Jess should pause and think why it is that actual progressive, left-wing adults are leaving the party and polling booths in droves over this issue. It's not because we've all suddenly become right wing conservatives.
This!

There are other options.

Realistically, what?

People should and will vote how they choose. Personally I will not be voting for Tories through supporting them. I will however be voting in whatever way it takes to keep Labour out of power. (Or getting Green or LibDem MPs into power.) Any of those three represent an absolute disaster for me personally and for women in general, particularly lesbian women. And for child safeguarding.

Currently that means that the safest realistic bet is to vote to keep Tories in power.

liliainterfrutices · 05/11/2021 12:56

She had a momentary hesitation about whether KS's name was Katherine. That doesn't seem like a particularly heinous crime.

Agree that people should vote as they see fit. But quite a few posters seem v uncomfortable about moving their vote to the Tories, so no harm in being reminded about what the Tories stand for beyond this issue.

FlossieF · 05/11/2021 12:54

I and two other women actually had a face-to-face meeting with her about this at her constituency office. We all live in the Birmingham area, but none of us were actually her constituents however.

Our initial e-mail / letter did make it past the office gatekeepers though.

AlfonsoTheUnrepentant · 05/11/2021 12:51

@antoniawhite

Please, please don't vote Tory though because of this and because Labour are a mess. They have done so much damage, caused so many deaths and misery, and will cause more. There are other options.
People should vote according to how they see fit.
TrainedByDinosaurs · 05/11/2021 12:45

Sounds like even if Jess Phillips is having her email filtered by ideology led office staff enough people on this thread have raised it personally we know Jess Phillips is lying. She is shameful. I desperately want to vote Labour but each time I edge towards thinking one of their MPs has some merit they disappoint.

If Rosie Duffield was my mp I would continue to vote for her but she isn’t. I spoilt my ballot saying why last time, it will be that or Shock Tory.

As an aside an ideology where office staff filter issues so they don’t get passed on to MP’s is deeply deeply suspect. MPs are the bosses for their office staff, they need to grow a backbone and deal with the office staff problem.

RoyalCorgi · 05/11/2021 12:45

She's told an obviously provable lie. Of course constituents have raised it with her.

As for forgetting Kathleen Stock's name, it's just about plausible that she could have forgotten her name, even though it's been all over newspapers, radio, tv and Twitter for the past two weeks, but a normal person's response would be to be apologetic about forgetting it, whereas she is dismissive, as if saying "this person is barely on my radar so I'm not even sure who you're talking about..." So that looks like another lie to me.

Artichokeleaves · 05/11/2021 12:35

This is the issue with selective reality isn't it? People keep coming up with really unhelpful evidenced facts like:

Yes, I raised it with you, and here's your email reply.

@Shedbuilder

I have raised this issue with every single canvasser and candidate for every party for the past two elections and none of them have told me that it's news to them. The Lib Dem candidate who phoned me for a personal chat told me I was disgusting for my GC views: he was a TWAW gay man and he was shockingly rude and dismissive of a lesbian constituent's views.

It think it's widely known that many MPs are having GC letters and emails quietly 'disappeared' by young, Labour-party-paid assistants. I am aware of at least one Labour MP who is GC-inclined but is very aware of being 'monitored' by their staff and is quite nervous of them.

Mines a Tory mp and I’m pretty sure that’s happening.

Thank you, I have to go out so haven't read the whole article but she sounds just like me. I tell you it makes some films really confusing when you mix up the goodies and the baddies. Oh for the old days when the goodies wore a white stetson and that baddies wore a black one. It was such a help.

Something I’ve been pondering is this.

MPs are only allowed to respond to their own constituents. For this reason, if your write to an MP, you are supposed to put your name and address in the letter, so they can check that you are their constituent.

But, it is not safe for anyone - but especially for a woman - to raise concerns about trans ideology. Women who do so are targeted with hate campaigns from aggressive nutters who bombsrd them with pornography, threaten sexual violence and try to get them fired. This has now happened to many women.

I am scared to put my name to a letter about protecting women’s rights when I don’t know where it will end up. MPs have previously quoted their constituents by full name.

But if I don’t put my name to a letter, the MP is supposed to ignore it. They are told to ignore anonymous letters.

What to do, what to do…

I don't think that it's strictly true that they are not allowed to respond to non-constituents, is it? They have to be careful not to represent non-constituents. So JP would be in a difficult position if every single email she had received about self-ID were anonymous or from non-constituents and she then wanted to raise the issue in parliament, as she wouldn't be representing her own constituents. But it's clearly unlikely that not a single constituent has contacted her, even with a sensitive subject like self-ID.

AFAIK, there is nothing at all to prevent JP from responding to non-constituents. I have written to MPs about issues that there were interested in, as a non-constituent, and received a reply.

lanadelgrey · 05/11/2021 12:14

She is an ambitious politician and knows what happened to Rosie Duffield. She presumably liaises with Karen Ingala Smith over the annual list from the femicide census, she knows Julie Bindel and her work. She knows, but she is an ambitious politician.

Re voting, the only thing is a mass of spoiled ballot papers and a campaign to explain why. Unless something miraculous or utterly scandalous happens then Labour are unelectable anyway.

I live in constituency of similarly ambitious and similarly silent but male MP. He is a very good constituency MP and has intervened and helped my family but he won’t be getting my vote unless he stops weasling on this.
I am very much looking forward to getting canvassers on my doorstep again. I enjoyed seeing an older green woman shuffle away from the door when I asked her what a woman was in 2019

ShinyHappyPoster · 05/11/2021 12:14

I always wonder why Jess is the preferred candidate of The Times. They're always running glowing articles about her and it makes no sense. She is , to quote a PP, a 'self-serving careerist'. They keep pretending she's the answer to Labour's problems and I cynically wonder if that's because they want to keep Labour out of power forever.

Jess has no principles, no convictions. And she's worse than Lammy because she definitely does know what a woman is and she knows the distress of women who have experienced DV and go to refuges. She knows how many women are killed each year. And yet she pretends TWAW and they're the most persecuted minority ever.

Has anyone ever looked into the funding of the Labour party round this issue? I remember when Jo Swinson forgot what a woman was, it turned out the LibDems had been given a large donation from a puberty-blocking pharma company.

Wow! Its absolutely hilarious.

And interesting to watch after last night reading Dominic Cummings recent piece on 'How Labour could win'.

I literally watched that whole minute and a half without knowing which side she was on, until the last minute when she told that lie. In a way thats an incredible skill to say so little and so much at the same time.

Its amazing really and did bring a chuckle to my day Grin

Laugh or cry, laugh or cry!

ScribblingPixie · 05/11/2021 12:06

I remember her mother berating me in the street when my son passed the 11 plus, 12 months later guess where her 11 year old son was going to school. Jess also went to a very selective girls grammar.

It's terrible that what works for politicians is having a 'schtick' when we are crying out for intelligent, brave, capable leaders.

Sophoclesthefox · 05/11/2021 12:05

I simply don’t believe it’s never been raised in her constituency. It’s just not credible at all.

I am sitting here looking at the replies I have had from my Labour MP on this topic in 2018 and 2019. He said “a number” of other constituents have also raised it with him, and I know at least three women local to me have been to his surgery to talk to him about it. My husband has raised it every single time we’ve had a doorstep canvasser for the last four years. I’ve also canvassed/raised awareness on this in areas demographically similar to her constituency, and there are many women (and men) there who are politically engaged on this topic.

It’s inconceivable that no constituents have written to Jess about this, and if she had the courage of her convictions, she needs to talk to her admin staff and check, because if she hasn’t seen the correspondence, then they’ve kept it from her.

Thanks, but I'll make my own decisions, one of which is that this absolutely encapsulates for me why I can't and won't vote Labour whilst they are in the grip of genderist ideology.
zanahoria · 05/11/2021 12:00

Even if you are bad with names, no need to call someone "what's her name"

It is plain rude

21budgies · 05/11/2021 11:58

There is absolutely no excuse for lying. If she's lying, she's unfit to be an MP. Saying that she's received letters isn't endorsing those letters.
Those who have evidence that she is lying should photocopy it or photograph it and send it to the national and local press. I think that's very important. MPs really need to be held to account.
It's time for us to take a small amount of risk. You can ask the paper not to publish your name. You can blank out your name by cropping the photo before sending it to them.

ShinyHappyPoster · 05/11/2021 11:56

Hopefully the constituents who have raised this issue with Jess will do so again by telephone and record it.

Datun · 05/11/2021 11:54

@PronounssheRa

The thing is, Jess Phillips is an MP and is all about fighting for women's rights. It's her job. She should know.

Unless you are the wife of a man who is transitioning, she's not that supportive of them.

It's unforgivable. Anyone who says the spousal veto, as it is misnamed, is awful, doesn't get it.

They are believing the propaganda that it stops men from transitioning.

She's either ignorant or misleading. Which again, is bloody unforgivable in this issue.

A few years ago, I could forgive someone being relatively uninformed.

But not now.
