Women died for my right to vote, but......

.... who in God's name is a sane gender critical person supposed to vote for if they can't bring themselves to vote Tory?

Imagine said member of the electorate also cared a lot about the environment and loathed Brexit with every bone in her sane GC body. Who could she vote for? Asking for a friend....

I'm in a somewhat similar position. I have absolutely no idea who to vote for. I haven't voted Labour since 2005. My vote since then has been split LD/Tory depending upon the election. In theory as I don't have a principled objection to voting tory I should vote for them. But a) I dislike Boris and b) I still can't forgive them for Brexit (yes, I recognise that it is done now - but I still don't feel able to vote conservative).

In the last election (London mayoral) in the absence of any major GC candidate (yes we had the SDP and a few independent, but they were small fry), I decided that I had two choices a) abstain or spoil my ballot paper and b) vote on a purely local issue which would severely impact my life. As it was a local election I went with b and voted on an anti-silvertown tunnel ticket which meant voting LD and (for the first and possibly last time in my life) Green.

But for the next election I haven't got a clue. Whichever way it'll probably be with my nose held. In terms of the General Election I live in an extremely safe Labour seat. The current (male) MP is a careerist and won't espouse anything too controversial to party dogma.

ArabellaScott · 04/11/2021 16:30

I would be the first in three generations to do so, but I'll vote Tory if the other parties don't see sense.

ProudMaiasaura · 04/11/2021 16:22

@JKDinomum

My Labour MP is GC (and massively criticised for it). If she doesn't get hounded out I'll continue to support her.
I'd be the same but sadly whilst my MP doesn't always follow party policy she's actually resigned from a post to do so she is TWAW so I cannot vote for her.

I know people are amazed that this is enough of an issue to make it a single vote decider, but frankly if we lose the sex based protections and definition of "woman" we'll never get it back, nor will our daughters or their daughters.

Frankly I don't give a shit what else is happening in politics if my existence doesn't matter.

twentnine · 04/11/2021 16:19

A discussion about the British political system.

Mrsorganmorgan · 04/11/2021 16:16

I feel exactly the same. I did look at the SDP manifesto, and it looked fine. In Wales, the Education syllabus for next year is absolutely ridiculous, and you could call it - teaching children lies.

twentnine · 04/11/2021 16:13

Social Democratic Party ( not the Lib Dems).

BloodinGutters · 04/11/2021 16:09

@LumosSolem

That's so poor *@BloodinGutters*.

I actually had a lengthy conversation with my MP on my doorstep about it all. Apparently Jacob Rees Mogg is very supportive of the GC cause 😬

I hate being in company with him but even a broken clock is right twice a day.

It really is.

We are in a very very safe Tory seat, in an area that has an organisation that’s in stonewalls top 20 funders, maybe even top ten possibly. Schools are frighteningly pro gender ideology.

All of which I find really strange because anyone I talk to personally gets the problems with little explanation from me. I don’t talk to everyone about it, I can think of a couple I avoid for the sake of the kids friendships-although even then I don’t lie when it’s came up, just don’t bang on like my usual style- but I appear to talk about it more than a lot judging by what I’ve read on here/Twitter about how scared people are to bring it up. Like I’ll bring it up at kids hobbies/dog park/hair dressers and so on. Not all the time, more like if asked how I am and I’m stressed about schools and this shit. And maybe people just agree to shut me up, but there’s certainly plenty who get it here. Yet there’s obviously a lot of stonewall influence also. So maybe mp is captured, or maybe he assumes the bigger funder/schools policies are representative of opinion here. Or maybe he just doesn’t gaf because he knows he keeps his seat by a big chunk each time.

I’ve never had anyone come to the door here either. So never get to rant face to face.

Blibbyblobby · 04/11/2021 16:08

@BloodinGutters

Makes no difference to my vote, I’m single issue voter, but I’ve never understood the vote conservative if you want a strong economy because the ifs & imf strongly suggest the opposite is true.

Oh I agree with you on the wider economy, which is why I vote (or rather, had been voting) as I do. But I'm a high earner in a global industry likely to inherit 6, maybe 7 figures. So for my personal financial interest, I'd be voting Tory.

Sixtycats · 04/11/2021 16:02

I'm just new here today (STB mum) so I'm totally shocked and pleasantly surprised this discussion is happening. I've been worrying over this too. Luckily, I could vote Alba but it feels like a wasted vote at the moment. Keen to hear others thoughts!

I think this would have the greatest effect really.

If Labour got in they definitely work towards getting self id in. But I don’t think it would happen over night given all the opposition. I don’t think it would likely happen within one term (could be wrong of course).

An noticeable uptick in votes for openly gc/any self id candidates would be something that’s seen by all parties. If a safe anything seat suddenly goes to a candidate that’s gc then that creates a strong message. If that’s a few seats over varying areas of the country then it has a bigger effect. It says to all parties this matters, and whichever party isn’t in government can see that and use to their advantage. I think bj is all kinds of muppet but he can do math. Any party who wants votes can. They can choose to appeal to an issue the electorate has shown them matters or they can remain the opposition.

dotoallasyouwouldbedoneby · 04/11/2021 15:41

@Tanith

So some posters would vote for Christopher Chope (Conservative), but not Rosie Duffield (Labour)?

That’s really going to help, isn’t it? Hmm

No in that case maybe not if you can be sure a candidate is 'gc' but I am worried Labour will hound her out before the next election.
dotoallasyouwouldbedoneby · 04/11/2021 15:40

@Fariha31

If none of the other parties have reconsidered please consider voting tory. I would have just laughed if someone, even a year ago, told me I would be saying this, but once women is re-defined to mean anyone there is no coming back. The implications are huge, basically if you take it to its logical extreme (and there is nothing to indicate that they wont, the opposite infact) women will lose every right and protection their currently is. A government lasts five years max, women losing the rights to be considered an equal human in society will take centuries to reverse.
This. Also it is the only way to bring the other useless misogynistic parties to their senses. If you spoil your ballot, they still keep their 'safe' Labour seat. Not sure there are any safe LibDem seats but same applies. You have to bear in mind the effect of the 'first past the post' system. It is hard to unseat someone if you vote for a fringe candidate rather than a mainstream one.
BloodinGutters · 04/11/2021 15:39

@LumosSolem

I have to admit actually *@BloodinGutters* , my local Tory MP is actually a reasonable MP, pains me to say it- and has actually listened to me when I've spoken to him about self ID, the gender woo being taught in my DC's primary school. I've got the feeling he sympathises with the cause, as does his wife from what he said!

I actually need to get in touch with him about the school PHSE stuff as he offered to help when approaching the DfE. Life has been crazy lately and I've not got round to it yet.

I don’t doubt other Tory mps are. I’ve heard back from my mp on other issues, brief and fairly useless answers, but still.

Anything gc, which is most of my emails over the last decade, I get the auto office reply and nothing else.

I can't answer your question about who to vote for, but I can tell you that if you want to honour our foremothers, you can still do so by spoiling your ballot. Regardless of whether anyone takes any notice of a spoilt ballot or not, that is still an exercise of your right to vote.

(I tend to look closely at independent candidates right now, although I did have a party to vote for at the most recent election in Scotland.)

BloodinGutters · 04/11/2021 15:36

@Blibbyblobby

I've happily voted against my own economic interest for my entire adult life but I'm no fucking way going to vote against my sex. If a party cannot acknowledge my lived existence as a female person is not fungible with a male's idea of womanhood in his own head, they do not deserve my vote.
I’ve never understood this POV (financial one).

Do you mean taxation?

Because otherwise the ifs and imf have continually said over the last however many years that it’s labours policies that would be best for the economy.

Makes no difference to my vote, I’m single issue voter, but I’ve never understood the vote conservative if you want a strong economy because the ifs & imf strongly suggest the opposite is true.

MiladyBerserko · 04/11/2021 15:36

Why not vote Tory? I don't get why not. I am not a Tory voter but absolutely will vote for them if they oppose self ID. Is not voting Tory more important than preserving women's rights.

BloodinGutters · 04/11/2021 15:33

@Rummikub

Interested too. I go between green and Labour but don’t feel able to anymore.

I also wonder what will happen if labour get in-? Would they reverse The current progress being made eg bring in self ID?

Of course they would

The thought of Labour actually getting in now terrifies me.

BloodinGutters · 04/11/2021 15:29
  • meant the 20% pro self id would be much much lower if the realities were spelled out
whatswithtodaytoday · 04/11/2021 15:29

I will never vote Tory. This is an important issue but not the only issue.
