Damian Barr TRA suicide slur *(title edited at OP's request)

Have just been having a heated conversation with DH. We agree on some things, but he insists he has seen a comment by Glinner about a TRA who made a failed suicide attempt, which was deeply offensive and gloating. I am sure he isn't right about this, but have a memory that someone like Bergdorf may have?

[quote NecessaryScene]It is remarkable how common this is. Someone a few months back summarised the dynamic quite well.

Wow, that sums it up perfectly, thank you.

TambourineofRighteousness · 31/10/2021 13:09

@maslinpan

I wasn't "sent off" to find the proof, he was saying that while there's a great deal of horrible hate coming from the TRAs, there is also mud slinging from elsewhere. I have now proved him wrong on that. He sees FB posts from both GC and TWAW friends and is trying to think things through. I get very angry about the enormity of it so have decided to point him towards the right research.
From your OP it reads as you have had to provide evidence for an erroneous statement from your DH, the woman doing the work again, plus it required the efforts of more women (on this thread) to remember the original source and provide links to prove he was wrong. If he is going to confidently make these types of assertions, I think the onus should go back on him to back up his arguments.

I'm sorry if my tone comes across harshly, this was the first thread I read this morning and my tolerance for men dumping on women in this fight is very low until I've had my second cup of tea. After that I try to accept that this is just the way it is.

Thanks for changing title of thread.
It is amazing just how many transactivists are guilty of horrendous transphobia. Others have displayed crass examples of homophobia, racism etc. It seems that ok bigotry has fashions and misogyny is the acceptable bigotry today.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 31/10/2021 10:42

Yes I've also got a screenshot of that one. Perfect description. People need to get to grips with what is really happening and who is pushing it on an individual basis, because the purity spiralling denouncements and online toxicity will continue until they do.

This is a helpful summary of exactly which “side” on this issue tends to use the “T” word.

I have reported.

this whole thread is unintentionally smearing Glinner and associating him with Barr’s terrible behaviour without any malice on anyone’s part intended.

Exactly. You could change it to "confusion over TRA suicide comment" or similar OP.

MidsomerMurmurs · 31/10/2021 10:06

Yes that would be a good thing to do.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 31/10/2021 10:06

Yes they will change it for you, especially as it's potentially defamatory!

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 31/10/2021 09:57

Report your post, and explain in your report why you're reporting

maslinpan · 31/10/2021 09:56

Good idea to edit the title, how do I do that?

OP posts:
PatsArrow · 31/10/2021 09:51

I agree allmywhat.

Also I lot of people just skim the titles of posts and not read on. Glinner has enough false accusations flung at him without (unintentionally) adding to them.

Vanishun · 31/10/2021 09:50

@allmywhat

OP do you think you could request a title edit substituting “Damian Barr” for Glinner? There is some evidence that people’s opinions are affected by false allegations even when they’re told immediately that those allegations are false.

And I’m a bit uneasy with all these comments talking about “even if” the hypothetical where Glinner did a thing that he categorically didn’t do. It seems very unfair to him.

I agree with this!
allmywhat · 31/10/2021 09:46

Though I do understand the points these comments are making and that they’re not malicious! I just am slightly concerned that this whole thread is unintentionally smearing Glinner and associating him with Barr’s terrible behaviour without any malice on anyone’s part intended.

@SunflowersInTheShade

Surely that's a red herring though? If you discussing women's rights then men in women's sport is still wrong irrespective of whether Glinner made a crass joke or not.
Exactly. What relevance would a comment on twitter be to this argument? He either thinks it is right or wrong.

And he has made an accusation about Glinner without any evidence but you were the one sent off to find the proof to show which of you is correct? Good bit of gaslighting.

guinnessguzzler · 31/10/2021 08:19

Yes, sorry, OP, I was somewhat angered on your behalf!

maslinpan · 31/10/2021 07:56

I have show him the DAmian Barr tweet. A GC friend of his forwarded it via Glinner (when would have been making a point about the rank hypocrisy of DB), but DH forgot the fine detail. Now he knows. On prisons, he totally gets it. I pointed him towards Mridhul Wadwa and all the charities airbrushing the word woman from their literature, so it's his turn to do the research.

OP posts:
MidsomerMurmurs · 31/10/2021 06:44

Does your DH know what DARVO stands for?

guinnessguzzler · 31/10/2021 06:23

'Should women have to share showers in prison with rapists who retain their weapons?' 'Well, someone who has spoken publicly about some of this stuff might have said something nasty, or it might not have been him, but someone definitely said something nasty'. That settles that then.

Vanishun · 31/10/2021 06:11

Interesting tactic by your DH to discredit you.

It was Damian Barr, the man who led the witch-hunt against Baroness Nicholson because of her GC and J K Rowling-related campaigning, using the Booker Prize as a proxy.
