'More recently, he said he has faced criticism from “gender-critical campaigners” after he started discussing the human rights of transgender people online. Is he aware of his status as a cisgender man speaking from a position of privilege? “I am very much so, yeah. It’s quite common for me to get called misogynistic simply because I support trans rights, but this is without any reference to all the other issues on which I support the rights of women – on abortion, against male violence.”'

What's the point of supporting women against male violence if you allow male rapists into women's prisons, women's domestic abuse refuges or women's changing rooms?

I feel like that line from Made in Dagenham is needed here...

"That's as it should be!"

ScreamingMeMeSawUs · 29/10/2021 18:29

@terryleather

Oh gawd is this tuneless fud still farting on about things he knows nothing about but presumes he does because he's of the Left and therefore on the side of the angels?

Shut it Billy and stay in yer lane.

Agree with all of this. Especially "tuneless fud" Grin

There is absolutely no reason for men like Bragg to stick their beaks in and speak on behalf of these men against women OTHER than misogyny. He gets called a misogynist because that's what the wanker is.

EdgeOfACoin · 29/10/2021 17:50

@HoardingFloralBuntingInACervix

Y'know what? IDGAF if a man 'supports' abortion. A woman's right to abortion serves men as well as women. And saying male violence is bad is the bare minimum. Bourgeois scrotum-bearer.
Well, quite. Just look at the pregnancy and relationship boards to see the number of women being pressurised by men to have abortions. Usually by men with no concept of the physical and emotional toll of having an abortion, particularly after a certain stage of pregnancy.
TheAntiGardener · 29/10/2021 17:39

@Reptar

Isnt this a logical fallacy - I do so much for X therefore I should get leeway for Y?
Well, it certainly doesn’t work the other way around, does it? You can believe in the rights of trans people to live without discrimination or abuse, you can stand up for those principles - but if you don’t also believe the twaw mantra and have concerns over things like people with working male genitalia being housed with vulnerable women in refugee and prisons, you are a hateful bigot. Blamed for murders and suicides. Lumped in with right-wing nuts.
Helias · 29/10/2021 17:36

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh, Dudebro!!

Is he aware of his status as a cisgender man speaking from a position of privilege? “I am very much so, yeah. It’s quite common for me to get called misogynistic ..."

Well, you ARE demonstrably and demonstratedly misogynist (and homophobic), Billy Bragg, but that's not what you were asked here. The point here is you're blethering at the top of your neoliberal narcissistic self-serving hypercapitalist lungs on "behalf" of trans people, when you are not trans and know nothing about being trans. In addition to the harm you are doing to women, you are also doing harm to trans people by making them look fucking bonkers (and rapey as hell) and provoking a backlash. This is NOT OK for you to do. No one wants your rape apologism except your fellow misogynists, and rich British men are not an oppressed or marginalised class.

Stop.

AlfonsoTheUnrepetant · 29/10/2021 17:31

Billy Bragg: Look you stupid women. I've already supported you on abortion and said that men shouldn't hit you. You're never bloody satisfied are you?

21stDentistryGirl · 29/10/2021 17:29

Any man who says “I support the right to have an abortion” is such a 1980s ally. It’s the kind of a shit a true ally would side-eye as completely fucking obvious.

LastSummerHere · 29/10/2021 17:25

I 💚 Nehanda. Worth a million of that Bragg.

Cuck00soup · 29/10/2021 17:20
Ah, it must be time for the brilliant Nehanda again:
Perfect.

I wish, I wish, I wish you cared

About women and girls.

Grumpyosaurus · 29/10/2021 17:16

@VoleClock

Thanks *@invisiblecats* - great song and video
Seconded. I enjoyed that.
17to35 · 29/10/2021 17:04

Listen to Romford Girls by Riff Raff. Explains it all.

Wildfart · 29/10/2021 16:21

That's funny.

NoYOUbekind · 29/10/2021 16:14

I'm lefty as fuck - this is why I married a centrist Tory. Billy and his bros make my fanny clam up.

InspiralCoalescenceRingdown · 29/10/2021 16:04

As well as his track record on women's rights, Bragg's spoken out against free speech, as well as supported the rights of businesses to fire employees for their beliefs. So anti-women, anti-worker, anti-human rights.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 29/10/2021 15:58

Hi, I'm Purgatory, and I support world peace. Now excuse the following problematic stances of issues of the day from me...

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 29/10/2021 15:56

Being against the bigger half of humanity hitting the smaller half of humanity is a bare minimum as a human being.

Does he think I should get a medal for having said that Year 6s (age 10-11, in the final year of primary school) shouldn't pick on Year 1s (age 5-6) in the playground?

Lottapianos · 29/10/2021 15:50

'A woman's right to abortion serves men as well as women'

Quite right

HoardingFloralBuntingInACervix · 29/10/2021 15:47

Lottapianos · 29/10/2021 15:36

God, he's a plum, isn't he? He reminds me of David Lammy - very proud of his feminist credentials (in his own mind) and wants a medal for giving a vague shit about women, but doesn't actually have a bloody clue. Very tiresome

senua · 29/10/2021 15:34

"all the other issues on which I support the rights of women – on abortion, against male violence.”
It's a good trick sometimes to turn these things on their head so you can see them for what they are.
Has anybody in the history of politics ever said "I do support male violence"?

Idiot.

jiggeryjaggerywoo · 29/10/2021 15:32

He's really disappointed me. I love his music and we're usually on the same politically, but he's clueless with this one Sad

nevernomore · 29/10/2021 15:24

Well all he has done here is state what everyone who supports this gender ideology believes. That you can support women's rights so far but no further when women's rights conflict with another group in society. Then you support that other group. Women's rights are limited to certain circumstances and contexts, unlike the rights of everyone else. Billy Bragg is at least being entirely consistent here.
