I thought this was interesting.

So, what's the TRA argument against this going to be? Surely a backlash against this ruling from the Home Secretary by insisting these criminals, including rapists must by named as Women would simply shine huge amounts of sunlight on an unpalatable issue?

@Cactu

There are estimated to be 200-500,000 trans people in the UK (male and female). We know 423 transwomen have been convicted of rape alone since 2013. Rates of offending are extremely high within this group. Why is this just being brushed under the carpet?
That's a very good point. I hope there is more and more coverage of this in the media.
FindTheTruth · 24/10/2021 05:41

Fair Play For Women have worked tirelessly on this issue for years talking to the home office, the ons, courts, IPSO the press regulator, politicians and recently a factual speech by Dr. Nicola Williams at the Conservative party conference which you can watch here

Dear Politicians. Before you get asked to say “transwomen are women” make sure you know what you are signing up to

Stop conflating sex and gender identity – they are two different things!

“Female” sex offenders and “women” committing sex crimes: why can’t the media get it right?

Words matter: The press must stop misreporting a person’s sex

miri1985 · 24/10/2021 02:35

Shon Faye was asked about trans women in womens prison the other day and I think its the most nonsense answer to a direct question I've ever heard.

twitter.com/Channel4News/status/1451601453022330893

The whole interview is here , absolutely no push back on the fact that most women are in prison for non violent crimes but that there are huge numbers of trans women in prison for sexual offences, even at 08:30 KGM says he doesn't know any figures and so relies on SF and theres absolutely no push back.

@MishyJDI

GreyhoundG1rl Yeah you do. In the same way you dont pre-judge anyone else. Transwomen are no more a threat then cis women. Punish wrong doers, not innocent women.
@MishyJDI that statement is straightforwardly untrue.

There are around 120 women in prison for sex offences (a handful of whom are males with a GRC) from a population of 33 million.

There are around 80 transwomen (most recent stats given to Parliament) in prison for sex offences from a population of around 100,000.

If you'd like to offer your explanation on how that doesn't mean that transwomen offend at standard male rates, I'd be interested in hearing it. In its absence, I'm going to work on the basis that you are in ignorance of the facts.

Male people are larger, stronger, and infinitely more prone to violence, especially sexual violence. How they personally identify has no effect on that at all.

Transwomen sexually offend at the same rate as any other male. Which is roughly 2,000 times the rate females offend. And given that we have separate spaces not because we think all men are icky, but because they pose a significant and proven statistical risk, it's quite breathtaking to say that all those safeguards and rights should be stripped away the second a male person says, "I want".

It's men's rights activism, plain and simple.

Isn’t your statement factually untrue? 400+ (and that’s only those convicted) transwomen rapists and 0 women rapists. Therefore transwomen are CLEARLY more of a threat than women??
TonyThreePies · 24/10/2021 02:08

Say what now? It's 2am, I've had a couple of drinks and I seem to have found a balanced article in the DM about Priti Patel saying that TW are not W when it comes to criminal offences. I'm drunk and should just go to bed, right? Or... did a prominent MP actually just say this? Crikey. The tide really is turning.

LangificusClegasaurous · 24/10/2021 02:01

Once again, transmen conspicuously absent from this discussion which is ostensibly about "trans" criminals, sex criminals in particular. I wonder why on earth that could be, and if that could have anything at all to do with this?

@Warmduscher

Finding common ground with Priti Patel is proper doing my head in.
Yes finding out that Priti Useless is not quite as useless as I thought is taking me some time to process.
dotoallasyouwouldbedoneby · 24/10/2021 01:37

@EdgeOfTheSky

Ms Patel needs to read what her Civil Servants are saying to those of us who signed the petition demanding that sex-based records be kept….
I think/hope maybe she has. I was going to complain to my MP about the wording/knockback but the murder of David Amess stopped me.
Dontgetyerknicksinatwist · 24/10/2021 01:15

Finally, some good news

dotoallasyouwouldbedoneby · 24/10/2021 01:15

@gamerchick

Thing is, the shit that bothers me. All this has been happening under Tory rule. Why do they care now?
If the T was only added to LGB in 2015 by Stonewall, a lot has happened 'under the radar' really quickly under 3 different Tory PMs whilst everyone was distracted by Brexit (2016). I suppose they care about the potential votes of 51% of the population in a way that Labour, LibDems, SNP, Greens etc quite clearly do not.

I don’t believe that statistic that there are that many trans people in the UK.
Rhannion · 24/10/2021 01:04

@JudyGemstone

I’ve been doing some thinking and I think maybe I’m ok with transwomen in female spaces until it comes to any trans women who have offended, especially against women/children
No, thank you. You might be ok with that, but I’m certainly not! No woman or child should be in the position of feeling vulnerable in a space that is meant to be exclusively theirs.

[quote EmbarrassingHadrosaurus]I find reading DM articles online very difficult to read, they’re so full of pop ups, ads and links to totally unrelated content

Would a service like Push to Kindle work for you (free for personal use)?

Very possibly, Thankyou, although my technophobia extends to still preferring actual books to kindle and the idea of trying to use some kind of proxy service to access…..well, I’m really not sure I am keen enough to read DM articles to overcome that! Grin Thankyou for trying to help though!

DefineHappy · 24/10/2021 01:00

So “Trans criminals are not women”, but Transwomen who are not criminals, are? What a minefield…

Cwenthryth · 24/10/2021 00:58

Much clearer article, and from a feminist platform to boot, although still not being clear on what/where this “official response to feminists” is

dotoallasyouwouldbedoneby · 24/10/2021 00:56

@ArabellaScott

If the Tories will properly stand up for women, I will vote for them.

I mean, given that much of this mess was their doing in the first place, it's not going to be enthusiastic support, but I will not see women sacrificed for the left's purity mission.

Yep. I am finding it easier and easier to vote Conservative even though originally I was just trying to stop the SNP.

I find reading DM articles online very difficult to read, they’re so full of pop ups, ads and links to totally unrelated content (and why is it always Peter bloody Andre!!).

I cannot see from the article their actual source on where this has come from? If says “The change was revealed in an official response to feminist campaigners calling for an overhaul of the rules.” does anyone know what that is actually referring to?

Its very poorly written, not least because I can’t see any evidence that Patel has said the apparent quote in the headline, but also seeming to say that the figure of 436 individuals recorded as women prosecuted for rape between 2012-2018 (not convicted or in prison, btw - prosecuted. There is a ~5% conviction rate for rape, IIRC) was calculated by Prof Sullivan - actually she simply highlighted the governments own statistics on this, I believe when submitting evidence to the Scottish Parliament recently. Thread discussing that here www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4360759-More-than-one-woman-a-week-prosecuted-for-rape

I do think the Tories are purposefully getting ahead on these issues now, in a calculated fashion. Whereas Labour and other parties who self-identify as “progressive” only comment either in Stonewall pre-approved slogans, or react when really given no other option to by Andrew Marr etc (and then tend to make a tit of themselves showing up their poor understanding of what the issues actually are), the Tories are carefully putting out very uncontraversial things like “keep up the hard work LGBA” from Johnson and now “police should record offenders by their actual sex not self-ID gender” from Patel - anyone who would find these statements problematic would never vote Tory anyway, so they really don’t have to worry about anyone who would find these moves offensive. But this is how the Tories hold the middle ground, the centrist swing voters, this is how Labour lose the next election and the Tories stay in power. Which is overall still bad for women. Although at least maybe crime stats may be vaguely accurate when it comes to offenders’ sex.

OperationDessertStorm · 24/10/2021 00:42

It’s disappointing she didn’t say anything sooner. The whole point of having someone vicious and uncompromising in these roles is that they are supposed to pick this shit up early.

DefineHappy · 24/10/2021 00:40

So what will happen to any trans-identifying people in prison currently? In future sentencing regarding allocation to prisons? To the statistics that have been so fundamentally skewed by the recording of male crimes within the female category? And why only for crime recording - why not in all facets of life?

dotoallasyouwouldbedoneby · 24/10/2021 00:38

@FannyCann

436 rapists recorded as women. That would be women with a penis as in law rape requires a penis. Shock
Staggeringly ridiculous.
dotoallasyouwouldbedoneby · 24/10/2021 00:33

@FreeBritnee

This is why the conservatives will stay in power. They are the only party that have the balls to voice an unpopular opinion.
Priti - thank you so much. This after that lame response about that petition on the same issue. They also need to look at stopping the devolved administrations from skewing UK data.
