I thought this was interesting.

So, what's the TRA argument against this going to be? Surely a backlash against this ruling from the Home Secretary by insisting these criminals, including rapists must by named as Women would simply shine huge amounts of sunlight on an unpalatable issue?

Wonder how the Labour Party will play this? Duck and hide presumably after their recent Cervix disaster movie? But maybe not?

FreeBritnee · 23/10/2021 23:23

There was an interesting documentary recently where they discussed companies like Facebook having changed their algorithm so that the most controversial/active comments stayed at the top instead of most recent. They explained that this one action had changed how people communicated online but also how topics were perceived. This is now filtering down into the real world. Twitter unfortunately is stepping out of the screen and coming to the workplace, the school, the uni and the knitting group. It’s scary shit.

OrangeJuiceAndNoodles · 23/10/2021 23:20

Yes!

Zero fucks given Grin Well done Priti!

BoreOfWhabylon · 23/10/2021 23:18

@FreeBritnee

This is why the conservatives will stay in power. They are the only party that have the balls to voice an unpopular opinion.
No, it's because they know it's becoming a more and more popular opinion as people are finding out what has been going on.

Labour needs to wake up fast. I hope they do, but I fear they won't.

Iggly · 23/10/2021 23:18

@FreeBritnee

It’s certainly an unpopular opinion currently and good for her for tackling it.
I don’t think it is actually. In the Twitter-verse then yes. But almost everywhere else you look, no.

That’s the problem with the internet and social media - finding a representative population is tricky.

And why, pray tell, haven’t the Tories tackled this before? It’s been years in the making.

MishyJDI · 23/10/2021 23:17

You might make that decision for yourself but why are you content to make that decision for other women and children? Particularly the women of faith who might need to withdraw from public spaces?

Just because you are a person of "faith" does not mean that faith is not bigoted and inclusive. What would Jesus do?

drinkingcherrywine · 23/10/2021 23:16

@IdrisElbow

Good news. Now they just need to get them out of the women's prisons where they have absolutely no business being.
Agreed.

Fluffymule · 23/10/2021 23:13

Wasn't that question explored on one of the panel sessions at last weeks LGBA conference?

With them saying that the Tories have been slow or reticent to push back against this stuff until now as they are carrying residual guilt over being on the 'wrong side of history' before, particularly clause 28. So were keen not to be seen as being the 'nasty party' on another similar issue?

It’s not unpopular.

The Tories are not all evil. Sadly a lot of their policies impact on very vulnerable people so even though they’re doing the right thing here, they take an approach that starves disabled people and children 🤷🏻‍♀️

aweegc · 23/10/2021 23:12

It'll be interesting to see the responses of certain police forces! Especially as this impacts - I'm guessing - how the individual is recorded and where they're placed from arrest onwards and what sex of officer would search them when/if required. Will there be a mutiny from the Stonewalled forces?!

SpindelWhorl · 23/10/2021 23:11

Bollocks.

SpindelWhorl · 23/10/2021 23:10

All this massive mess has happened under David Cameron, Theresa May and Boris Johnson.

So let's please put the blame where it lies.

The fact that the Cabinet can now see which way the wind is blowing is down to the amazing grassroots women of the UK.

Labour are a fucking useless Opposition.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 23/10/2021 23:09

@gamerchick

Thing is, the shit that bothers me. All this has been happening under Tory rule. Why do they care now?
I reckon they thought they were being kind and inclusive. Remember Stonewall has its claws firmly embedded in the civil service, even the cabinet office and it's only now that they've realised what's been unleashed. Complete failure to exercise due diligence of course with catastrophic impacts on women and children.
Scraggythang · 23/10/2021 23:08

I feel like this is a bit of trying to cover some tracks before the inevitable public enquiry into stonewall.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/10/2021 23:07

@LizzieSiddal

I’d really love someone to ask Kier Stammer what he thinks about this change to recording crimes.
Yes. It really shouldn't be a difficult for anyone with an ounce of sense and integrity to answer.

@GingerAndTheBiscuits

I think that 400+ figure may include some joint enterprise prosecutions and possibly also other forms of penetration? Trying to find original reporting of the figure
Yes I’d like to see the figures on this if you find them, very useful evidence to have available when talking to people who deny the issues. Also as a percentage of the total rape convictions.
EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 23/10/2021 23:06

@Cactu

There are estimated to be 200-500,000 trans people in the UK (male and female). We know 423 transwomen have been convicted of rape alone since 2013. Rates of offending are extremely high within this group. Why is this just being brushed under the carpet?
One of my difficulties with this is a consequence of the poor reporting and lack of data collection.

1 The low number of prosecutions and the low number of convictions, means that there is no way of knowing how many rapes have involved transwomen as a perpetrator and have not been prosecuted/convicted.

2 A number of rapists tend to discover that they have a trans identity part way through a trial; once convicted and awaiting sentencing; after they are imprisoned.

I’ve been doing some thinking and I think maybe I’m ok with transwomen in female spaces until it comes to any trans women who have offended, especially against women/children

What level of offence would it have to be? Something that is dealt with in a Magistrates or Crown Court?

You might make that decision for yourself but why are you content to make that decision for other women and children? Particularly the women of faith who might need to withdraw from public spaces?

ItsRainingProstateOwners · 23/10/2021 23:05

Why do they care now?

Maybe like so many people, they just didn’t know? It’s all been done so quietly and the people in charge probably just let others get on with the nitty gritty and don’t know what’s happening at the coal face.

MishyJDI · 23/10/2021 23:05

GreyhoundG1rl Yeah you do. In the same way you dont pre-judge anyone else. Transwomen are no more a threat then cis women. Punish wrong doers, not innocent women.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 23/10/2021 23:03

Taps feet waiting for the pronouncements from the Secretaries of State for Health and Education..

Deliriumoftheendless · 23/10/2021 23:01

I really doubt “male rapists should not be in women’s prisons” is as unusual or controversial an opinion as some folk on twitter would have it.

I have no statistics for it but I would imagine it’s what most of the general public would call common sense.

gamerchick · 23/10/2021 23:01

ArabellaScott · 23/10/2021 22:59

If the Tories will properly stand up for women, I will vote for them.

I mean, given that much of this mess was their doing in the first place, it's not going to be enthusiastic support, but I will not see women sacrificed for the left's purity mission.

OldCrone · 23/10/2021 22:57

@GingerAndTheBiscuits

Some of them could be joint enterprise, but other forms of penetration aren't recorded as rape - they're recorded as sexual assault (assault by penetration).
