All of you saying you'd now vote Tory. It is totally up to you and I can see why you would but their support right now is purely cynical. Tories don't care about women or women's rights. They have seen this is an issue where they can split the left and pick up votes and foster hatred of Starmer. They will - and did - swing the other way if that becomes the strategic thing to do to hold on to power.
Don't forget Maria Miller (Tory MP) first introduced the Self-ID stuff and MPs like Caroline Nokes and Penny Mordaunt quite often say TWAW and 'be kind'. They are just trying to appeal to different crowds and strategically covering all bases. Don't mistake that for being aligned with or caring about women like we do. What they have done to women in this country in the past 11 years is disgraceful (from cuts to DV refuges and to legal aid to getting rid of the Universal Credit uplift which hurt single mums the most). Nothing feminist about em.
But of course I am also glad that they now see it as benefial to them strategically to be pro-reality on this - they have the most accurate polling and it must mean that they know we are now in the majority!
Is it?
What about the Tory MP who wrote the excellent article on this the other day?
What about the work that's been done by Tory members of the HOL in the past few years? Or the different posters on FWR who have reported talking to their own MPs and getting thoughtful, supportive responses?
Do you think that the women in the Conservative Party aren't as likely as any others to see what's going on, and the danger?
Maybe you can argue that the LP must really believe they are on the side of right on this, since they are willing to lose elections over it. But I don't think you can extrapolate from that and say that therefore members of the Conservative Party are just cynical and want a winning policy.
Though I also wouldn't necessarily call being responsive to the public view a cynical approach. It's part of actually governing, and in a democracy, it's generally considered a feature rather than a bug.
