Girls night in Campaign targeted for not being inclusive

A group of young women started a campaign to boycott night clubs in the wake of drinks being spiked & women being attacked

The outcome was of course predictable, because heaven forbid women have something of their own

I am apoplectic with rage on behalf of these young women. Only yesterday there were a ton of reports on young womens poor mental health. Do they really not join the fucking dots
"Anti carceral" is where feminists get guilt tripped that it's wrong to want to send rapists to prison.

thecritic.co.uk/issues/june-2021/putting-women-last/
Sometimes I feel there must be a forum - 4chan or some such - where men meet and discuss tactics to push their agenda, psyops-style. "We need something to protect rapists from prison sentences. I know, let's call it anti-carceral feminism!"

Ifonlyus · 26/10/2021 09:47

Also, nightclubs would not exist very long if there were no females in them. I think women know that. It's not the same as them removing themselves from other public life.

Ifonlyus · 26/10/2021 09:42

@LizzieSiddal

What's not clear is what the bars and nightclubs are supposed to do, if they can't increase security. You are just left with women staying at home.

The woman who organised this campaign said initially she’d contacted all the nightclubs in her university City and very few had even bothered to get back to her, the rest said they could not do anything. That’s when they came up with the boycotting idea. They want the clubs to use tops&straws on all drinks, more CCTV, and more training for staff so they didn’t automatically think women were just drunk, when they collapsed in clubs. Pretty basic things really!

Yes, that was my understanding of it. I'm on the Facebook group page for parents whose young people are applying to or starting uni and there have been several reports of spiking, and the door staff have acted appallingly. Always accusing the girls of being drunk and at times throwing them out alone on to the streets.

My daughter has talked of the campaign in empiwrting terms. She feels a sense of solidarity, strength in numbers, agency and sees the power of their group action as taking their money and socialising elsewhere. Her university tried to get it to happen on the Friday but they've said no, they will boycott the Wednesday night as that's their biggest night held at the uni.

When I looked at the campaign, there are very clear and achievable demands being made.

If course it is only part of the solution - the police need to do more - but it is a start.

I'm fuming about the loss of 'girls' from the campaign name. My DD still called it a girls night in, even though it has been changed to [name of uni] night in.

Inclusion was a good concept for some areas of society (e.g.handicapped accessibility, multi-ethnic advertising) but then one group took it so far, we've all been run right over a cliff. When young women's attempts to protect themselves from sexual assault and violence is shamed for not including everyone, we just go backwards. Exclusion is the ENTIRE point of Girls Night In. It won't work if you include men.

Knackered80 · 25/10/2021 21:01

This makes me incredibly sad and angry. I saw another page posting about men and ‘marginalised genders’ no mention of women.

Scraggythang · 23/10/2021 23:24

@FindTheTruth that’s reassuring to hear. Everyone from my age (early 30’s) and below are either be kind-ers or gender ideology advocates. I was losing hope!

MrGHardy · 23/10/2021 23:15

Intersectionality is a cancer. Young people are emotionally blackmailed into this nonsense.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 23/10/2021 19:01

It's so telling isn't it Mrsjamin ? Every bloody time it's women who get marginalised, compromised and must include men, even in their very definition. Angry

Hoardasaurusterf · 23/10/2021 18:20

@FindTheTruth

Not a chance *@EdgeOfTheSky* the marginalised person (an artist who supports sex workers) was all ME ME ME it's all about ME. that our teen agers apologise to and submit is horrifying and shows that feminism, real feminism, is missing from education. On a positive note the clearest voices I've heard this week at Filia and LGB were from teenagers and women aged 21, 22 standing up and speaking up in the audience.
It's so depressing to see these young women bowing down as soon as a man complains that he's not included. I work with a large team of varied ages and feel that a lot of young women have become dick panderers & accept some truly awful behaviour from men compared to those slightly older. Good to hear of young feminists speaking up at Filia. We need more of them or the future is bleak for our daughters, nieces etc.

Can anyone point me to the trans voices calling for and end to violence and spiking by men? Supporting their young cis siblings ?

There must be some.

Surely.

Surely?

thevassal · 23/10/2021 16:43

@KimikosNightmare

It’s the groveling apology for me

The apology to the trans woman makes no sense. The response should have been "but you are a girl! "

exactly!If TWAW then surely TGAG so are automatically included in a girls night in. And if TMAM then they are not at risk?
So confused...
LonginesPrime · 23/10/2021 16:34

@FindTheTruth

the person who said girlsnightin was marginalizing them
So essentially, they've been bullied by the "all lives matter" brigade.

I can't believe we've reached a point where women get attacked and are so concerned about checking their own privilege that they're unable to organise in any meaningful or useful way. This is horrific.

It doesn't matter what sex or gender identity the people who complained are - they're misogynists, plain and simple.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 23/10/2021 16:17

The response should have been "but you are a girl! "

It shouldn't, but point taken.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 23/10/2021 14:36

Fucking hell I could cry for those girls. Socialised by the Internet to be so quick and eager to placate & please the moment a man says he feels sad

Their sadness and fear counts for literally nothing

Those young women who abased themselves - I've just been reading round on NecessaryScene 's Lifton link. It couldn't be clearer.

*In the book, Lifton outlines the "Eight Criteria for Thought Reform":

Milieu Control. This involves the control of information and communication both within the environment and, ultimately, within the individual, resulting in a significant degree of isolation from society at large.

Mystical Manipulation. The manipulation of experiences that appears spontaneous but is, in fact, planned and orchestrated by the group or its leaders to demonstrate divine authority, spiritual advancement, or some exceptional talent or insight that sets the leader and/or group apart from humanity, and that allows a reinterpretation of historical events, scripture, and other experiences. Coincidences and happenstance oddities are interpreted as omens or prophecies.

Demand for Purity. The world is viewed as black and white and the members are constantly exhorted to conform to the ideology of the group and strive for perfection. The induction of guilt and/or shame is a powerful control device used here.

Confession. Sins, as defined by the group, are to be confessed either to a personal monitor or publicly to the group. There is no confidentiality; members' "sins," "attitudes," and "faults" are discussed and exploited by the leaders.

Sacred Science. The group's doctrine or ideology is considered to be the ultimate Truth, beyond all questioning or dispute. Truth is not to be found outside the group. The leader, as the spokesperson for God or all humanity, is likewise above criticism.

Loading the Language. The group interprets or uses words and phrases in new ways so that often the outside world does not understand. This jargon consists of thought-terminating clichés, which serve to alter members' thought processes to conform to the group's way of thinking.

Doctrine over person. Members' personal experiences are subordinated to the sacred science and any contrary experiences must be denied or reinterpreted to fit the ideology of the group.

Dispensing of existence. The group has the prerogative to decide who has the right to exist and who does not. This is usually not literal but means that those in the outside world are not saved, unenlightened, unconscious, and must be converted to the group's ideology. If they do not join the group or are critical of the group, then they must be rejected by the members. Thus, the outside world loses all credibility. In conjunction, should any member leave the group, he or she must be rejected also.[3]

On a personal level, this shit makes me grateful to be old enough and tired enough that every night is a Durham night in for me. How is any of this any better for young women than the 80s were?

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 23/10/2021 13:21

That is so clear - I've just created a thread about Solzhenitsyn's Live Not By Lies - it would be good to have this in the same thread (I've not seen Lifton before).

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 23/10/2021 13:05

But why can’t everyone who identifies as something other than a girl just make their own movement or shut up. Pathetic.

It has to be for a reason beyond the lack of a straightforward name for the campaign.

I acknowledge the difficulty of forming a pithy way to describe:
NBs who present as female but don't acknowledge themselves as women are conflicted about the possibility of sustaining an assault that is so far media-reported as largely targeted at women.
NBs who were OFAB and are male presenting but still understand that they are at a notional risk of sustaining…
NBs who adopt a neutrois but still suspect that there is a notional risk of sustaining…

I'm so sorry these young women were oppressed into issuing these grovelling apologies. It's very Cialdini - social psychologists in years to come will have so much research on this if we're not all living in some authoritarian social, political, and academic system.

"An amazing example is the prison-camp program in Korean War where the Chinese used commitment and consistency pressures to gain compliance from prisoners. Although the American servicemen had been trained to give minimal details (name, rank and number), they gave away much more. How? The Chinese first asked prisoners to “make statements so mildly anti-American or pro-Communist as to seem inconsequential” such as “The United States is not perfect.” Then, once they’d complied with these minor requests, they were gradually pushed to make bigger and bigger declarations. Once they’d agreed that the US was not perfect, they would be pushed to expand on ways in which this was the case – not wanting to be inconsistent, they complied. Then, to remain consistent, they would agree to read their statements aloud in a discussion group, then maybe record it as an anti-American radio broadcast. Finding themselves a “collaborator”, without any physical coercion, the men changed their self-image and performed even more extensive acts of collaboration. The majority of prisoners collaborated at some time. Nobody wanted to appear inconsistent.

The critical act here, apparently, was that they wrote it down. They couldn’t deny the previous step, and pushed themselves into further acts of collaboration to prove their consistency (probably to themselves more than anyone else)."

My heart is aching for these young women.

Wish they’d stood up for themselves.

That would have guaranteed the failure of their campaign as they’d have been labelled TERFs, the campaign would then be a TERF campaign and it would get no traction. Even if the organisers are personally 100% immune to the gaslighting and 100% unafraid of personal consequences for themselves if they get labelled TERFs (and who wouldn’t be afraid? Especially at that age surrounded by woke students and with no career or power) they’d still have to capitulate to do what they’re trying to do.
