I thought this may be of interest:

www.mpts-uk.org/hearings-and-decisions/medical-practitioners-tribunals/dr-adrian-harrop-nov-21

The tribunal will inquire into the allegation that from 10 May 2018 to 23 November 2019, Dr Harrop inappropriately used his Twitter account to post tweets that were offensive and/or insulting and/or inappropriate in nature and some of which were intended to intimidate.

Shocking when you see all this stuff together, he really is a nasty piece of work. He must be shitting himself now though.

BreadInCaptivity · 20/10/2021 14:24

I think the problem for Harrop's defence is going to be that (assuming these examples fall within the timescales cited re: the hearing) I can think off the top of my head of 2 examples where he admitted himself that he'd crossed the line.

One in doxing a fellow GC HCP on Twitter (I think someone's posted the screenshots on this thread) and the others where he challenged people to find evidence of his misogyny and if they did he'd make a donation to Women's Aid (I think it was). Receipts were provided and he posted about having coughed up the money.

The issue here is that these examples demonstrate a self awareness of inappropriate SM postings yet his behaviour did not change for a considerable period after these episodes and only allegedly/suspectedly after many complaints were made to the GMC and he perceived a threat to his career - he stopped posting what many people feel were offensive/misogynistic comments only when he stopped posting anything and left Twitter altogether.

Essentially it can be alleged he was only acting out of self preservation/interest rather than a demonstration of remorse for his comments and awareness of their inappropriate nature.

@nauticant

I doubt that Hayden is responsible for the defence and isn't actually stating this.
I was getting over-excited. Wink

Doctors have insurance to cover qualified and specialist legal representation in the event of an investigation or tribunal.

It sounds like Stephanie is well-briefed nonetheless.

I agree that nobody should go and protest. Although it is satisfying to see him have to account for his behaviour, the safety of patients is at stake so nobody should give the tribunal any grounds to believe that Dr Harrop is the victim of a campaign.

The thread linked to on the previous page is jaw dropping and being constantly updated.

Instead of thinking about protesting outside the venue please think about attending the hearing. You can apply to observe by clicking on a link within the MPTS statement. Much more interesting to be at the hearing, not to mention warmer.
It’s getting better and better. Look who is conducting the defence.

I don't think they are saying that they are conducting the defence? (I don't think even Harrop would be that daft...)

This has utterly made my day!!

PronounssheRa · 20/10/2021 12:53
@Terfasaurus they've straight out misunderstood the process then. It's being passed to the MPTS because that's the body which deals with concerns about the Fitness to Practice of doctors.
Imagine my surprise Grin

MrsKeats · 20/10/2021 12:52

So what are people thinking is the most likely outcome?

@YetAnotherSpartacus

Depends on how steeped in gender ideology the old boy's club are, looking at what is going on in the NHS I'd be surprised if they weren't fully paid up members

Or just plain misogyny.

Excellent point, that too.

The medical profession as a whole is very misogynistic.

Terfasaurus · 20/10/2021 12:17

This is an interesting take.

twitter.com/setoacnna/status/1450760136272891904?s=21

Apparently the GMC are passing the buck to the tribunal service, instead of acting themselves.

All cases involving misconduct are automatically passed to the tribunal service after review by the GMC. It’s part of the statute. www.gmc-uk.org/concerns/information-for-doctors-under-investigation/our-sanctions/referral-for-a-hearing-at-the-mpts

I believe that if Dr Harrop is unsatisfied with the outcome then he has to appeal to the High Court.

Joss Prior says they know everything that’s going on with Adrian and that GC people are going to be disappointed. It’s all going to be fine…Confused 🍿

Also it won't be 'old boys club'. It'll be a panel of three - a lawyer chairing, a doctor, and a lay person. They are totally independent of the GMC. (And, if my experience of other regulators is anything to go by, take their roles seriously and aren't fools.)

RoyalCorgi · 20/10/2021 11:23

@Cwenthryth

It seems like undermining the trust of patients is perhaps the key to assessing the severity of there types of offences? The fact that many many women find Harrop’s actions deeply offensive and would be fearful to need medical treatment from him due to his openly stated prejudice against women who hold certain beliefs, that is the problem for the GMC. Right?
You'd really hope so. It's about how seriously they regard misogyny. You can't rely on it, can you?

Though I also wonder about the couple of times where he's explicitly discussed patients he's treating, like the trans woman he prescribed HRT to. Even though he didn't name the patient, that strikes me as highly unprofessional. Certainly if I were the patient in question I wouldn't be happy about it.

is anyone live tweeting?

RedDogsBeg · 20/10/2021 11:14

@Rhannion

I have a gut feeling that the old boys club won’t work here.

@YetAnotherSpartacus

I reckon the boys' club will say "you've been a very naughty boy now don't (let us catch you)do(ing) it again". Wink, wink, nudge, nudge.
Highly unlikely. Some examples:

Pate (dentist) suspended for 4 months initially, has now been suspended for years due to lack of insight, due to Islamophobic comments on a closed forum. Googling Pate and GDC will find it.

Fisher (mental health nurse) struck off for abusive comments. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-essex-38102949

There's also been a nurse suspended for sectarian comments on FB, but I can't remember the details of the case.

Generally this sort of stuff is taken very seriously because it undermines the trust of patients.

I suspect so, however, the sunlight being shone on him and his actions and the fact he is not untouchable as he thought he was will also be a form of punishment for him. I hope the MSM pick it up and report it as that will add to the humiliation for him and he will forever be recognised and associated with his actions whatever the outcome of the Tribunal.

This! Please don’t think about any protests, it will look very bad for us and would be used by his side.

Absolutely, let Harrops tweets do the talking
