Apologies if this has already been shared - wanted to post the link to this statement in case any academics/students/alumni would like to add their support:

@BlackLambAndGreyFalcon, I did exactly the same as you when signing, for the same reasons.

girafferafferaffe · 13/10/2021 20:37

I can see why people aren't though. A public list of people who will be abused online, jobs threatened, doxxed etc. frightening.

I work somewhere that Is particularly woke.

Keyboardkaterina · 13/10/2021 20:29

Also see that quite a few alumni from my university employer have signed it and only 2 staff. From a workforce of thousands. Very sad.

Keyboardkaterina · 13/10/2021 20:27

Tony, sadly I wish I could sign it but have recently started a new job at a woke university and feel I cannot risk it.

GameofPhones · 13/10/2021 20:27

Signed.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 13/10/2021 20:02

I work in a university. I did sign the letter, but unfortunately I wasn't brave enough to give my full name and I also put the insituton affiliation as a former student of X university where I did my undergraduate degree, rather than a member of staff at Y University. Cowardly perhaps, but neither the university nor my union would have my back if any complaint was made and I'm PS staff so can't even claim to have academic freedom.

IamAporcupine · 13/10/2021 19:16

@IamAporcupine

Did you all have to request access to sign it?
Argh - still can't sign!
girafferafferaffe · 13/10/2021 19:07

I'm frightened to sign in my full name. I feel that I must though.

AlfonsoTheDinosaur · 13/10/2021 18:57

I signed.

I don't really worry about my job if I expressed GC views at work. My academic specialism isn't relevant, our HR dept is cautious, and actually my UCU rep has replied to yesterday's flounce with a gentle offer to help me if I ever need it anyway. She didn't seem to know much about the whole issue, actually.

I still don't want to come out as GC because I worry about the impact this would have on transgender students. I don't want them to stop existing, or to reject or disrespect their choices. But that's the message they are getting around GC academics, isn't it. So I don't think they have reason to feel less safe around me - but I do think they're likely to feel that way and I'd hate that.

Conversely, students rarely show much interest in my religious beliefs, though they could draw conclusions, rightly or wrongly, from my ethnicity. I'd never ask directly about theirs, but very occasionally they'll offer that information, in the classroom. Even more rarely, they'll ask me, and I'll usually offer a bland partial response.

I'd be fairly sure that most of my classes feature some combination of Christians and Muslims from lapsed to devout, as well as atheists. Students clearly make the same assumption. None of us seems to feel less safe for it.

This is such a toxic situation.

jhuizinga · 13/10/2021 18:07

I've signed. It's good to see so many signatures, many of which are from fellow academics.

Onyernelly · 13/10/2021 18:04

@JaninaDuszejko

I sent cards to JK publishers and received lovely replies that my dd has taken ownership of and displays proudly in her bedroom.

2319inprogress · 13/10/2021 17:57

Done/bump

JaninaDuszejko · 13/10/2021 17:41

@Cailin66

Signed, and will get others to sign. Also sent Stock an email of support last week and she kindly replied.

[email protected].

I gave my full name etc. Because I'm sure she gets hate mail.

I think when JK Rowling first came out as gender critical we decided cards and letters would be a good way to get to her because the TRAs would be much less likely than us middle aged women to write a proper letter and she might turn off her social media and email if she's getting a lot of abuse.

Signed. So heartening to see so many people using their own names, even though there's a chance things will be difficult for them as a result.

RaininSummer · 13/10/2021 13:10

Signed

Blessex · 13/10/2021 13:10

Signed as alumna. Full name and everything. Am off the bloody fence! The emperor is wearing no clothes!!!!!! Hahahahahahaha

VillKrill · 13/10/2021 13:02

@TonyThreePies absolutely - and I don't judge any woman who feels unable to speak out. I'm in the fortunate position of my academic job not being my only source of income so I feel that a) it's a risk I can justify taking and b) it's incumbent on those of us who are in a similarly fortunate position to speak out. But yes, the fear is still very real and I know many other GC feminists who feel the same.

I still feel that my job is at risk if I come out as GC. Is anyone else feeling this still?

Me. I'm a teacher and I don't believe my union would support me if I were sacked for having GC views.

SirSamuelVimes · 13/10/2021 12:57

Happily I've changed jobs recently and now feel able to put my name. When I was a teacher I didn't though.

TonyThreePies · 13/10/2021 12:53

Thank you for sharing this. I still feel that my job is at risk if I come out as GC. Is anyone else feeling this still?

VillKrill · 13/10/2021 12:51

Wow, thanks everyone. I was also heartened to see the names of a couple of colleagues on there. I hesitated about putting my name "out there" at first but after years of being nervous about voicing my GC views at work for fear of threats/discipline etc I've decided fuck it, I'm going to nail my colours to the mast and stop letting MRAs and their abuse frighten me into silence. Enough is enough.
