Women must resist arrest by any male police officer and demand the presence of a policewoman

I've never posted on mumsnet before but I'm compelled to after reading reports of the kidnap, rape and murder of Sarah Everard.

Any woman who finds herself in a situation where she faces arrest by a male police officer must resist and obstruct that arrest at all costs. She must not face charges for doing either, since it is potentially dangerous for a woman to be taken away by a male police officer. We can no longer trust the police.

Rather, a woman must be able to demand that a policewoman be present before any arrest takes place. We can no longer assume that there is any rigour in the recruitment process involving male police officers.

Do you think I am being fair? After what happened to Sarah Everard, I think that resisting arrest and insisting a woman be present is essential to women's safety. See below for some recent cases involving the police.

Detective Inspector Neil Corbel was charged with 19 counts of voyeurism in the Greater London, Manchester and Brighton areas.

Wayne Couzens.

Deniz Jaffer and Jamie Lewis taking unofficial pictures of Bibaa Henry and Nicole Smallman after they were stabbed to death.

I’m sure there are more incidents where male police officers hold women in contempt and would harm them if they could.

The police are not under funded. They have the resources to dance at every pride parade and pet people dressed in puppy costumes, they have the resources to ask people on social media to get in touch if they’ve been offended by anything as it might be a hate crime, they have the resources to send 2 officer to a different county on an overnight stay to interview a mum about her views, they have the resources to turn up at workplaces to “check your thinking”.

They just don’t care about women

Quite
IntermittentParps · 30/09/2021 13:49

@Soubriquet

Fair? Yes

Realistic? No

No policeman will accept you kicking off because you want a female police officer

I don't care. I'd rather be alive and deal with any consequences than be dragged off to be killed.

@ABCDEF1234

What a ridiculous idea. Maybe all women now need to stay at home just incase they come across the 0.00001% of men who harm them? Maybe they shouldn't even stay at home incase their husband is one of these 0.00001% of men. Should we disown teenage boys as soon as they turn 16?18? just incase they turn out to be one of the 0.00001% of men?
Is that 1 in 10 million? So, in a population of (say) 65million people, knocking off 10 million for children and young people etc., leaving 56 million, with 28 million adult males…Are you claiming there are

Floisme · 30/09/2021 13:42

Imagine a world where men took responsibility for male violence.

Nah, you're right - ridiculous idea.

happydappy2 · 30/09/2021 13:41

Bearing in mind, if Wayne cousins identifies as a woman, he'll no doubt be transferred to a womens prison.

That is how shit the reality is for women.

Where are you getting these numbers from? What are those men doing?

I don't disagree with the principle, but personally I will going forward only allow myself to be apprehended either if there are two officers (don't mind which sex) or they're happy to call the control room in my presence.
And I would not go anywhere with one officer on their own, regardless of sex.

LK1972 · 30/09/2021 13:18

Ah, good advice on r4 right now from someone- do not get into unmarked car, insist they call marked backup. If you feel unsafe call 999 and talk through what makes you feel unsafe.
@Pumperthepumper no, she got kicked because she was assaulting an officer. If she had been just standing and not on top of an officer assaulting him then the other officer would have passed her by and went straight to assist his colleague, bypassing her completely.
No. The consequence to assaulting an officer could have been a number of things - arrest. Restraint.

The consequence to him kicking her in the stomach was: she got kicked in the stomach. That was his choice, not hers.

Pumperthepumper · 30/09/2021 13:15

We don't know. However I presume that he wouldn't kick another person who was assaulting his colleague if they weren't in fact, assaulting his colleague.

@AwaAnBileYerHeid so if we don’t know, what happens if he kills someone by kicking them in the stomach?

LK1972 · 30/09/2021 13:15

And I would not get in the car with a lone male police officer , as that in current circumstances would not make me feel safe

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 30/09/2021 13:13
@AwaAnBileYerHeid so how do we know he wouldn’t kick another child in the stomach?
yourhairiswinterfire · 30/09/2021 13:13

Perhaps the police and society in general need to be a bit more heavy handed with these scumbags.

I think a grown man who is more than capable of safely restraining a 15 year old girl but choses to boot her in stomach instead is the scumbag 🤷

PlanDeRaccordement · 30/09/2021 13:12

@Northernlurker

I have told my daughters not to accept arrest by a sole officer. I will not do so myself. Frankly I don't ever expect any of us to do anything to merit arrest and that's the point. Neither did Sarah. After this case I would hope any lone male policeman would detain at the scene and request officers attend before trying to move a lone female. They must know how terrifying this is. So we make a fuss, we make a noise, we refuse to move, we attract attention and we support other lone women we see in this position. Because if the police are on the level then it's no issue to get somebody else, a marked car etc. What's the worse that can happen? Resisting arrest in these circumstances or what happened to Sarah. Women need to be heard, be loud,make your presence felt. That's the way to safety in an unsafe world.
What’s the worst that can happen? The police can kill you that’s what can happen. This thread is full of white privileged middle class attitude that the police wouldn’t dare to harm a woman throwing a fit.

I’m not advising my daughters to be so reckless. What might work for your average middle class white woman, would not work for them.

LK1972 · 30/09/2021 13:12

Could there possibly be a specific independent, though government sponsored, helpline/text service for women and girls to call when they feel unsafe being arrested? Maybe modeled on domestic violence helplines, but enabled and authorized to check that the arrest is being entered as a legitimate arrest into a police database. Bet this bastard wouldn't have done that, as it was not a legitimate arrest - we need additional safeguards to protect females from predators in the police, as current ones are not working.

MargaritaPie · 30/09/2021 13:11

Don't you think the police resources are stretched enough without an additional requirement to ensure a female cop is present whenever a woman is being arrested? And what if it just happened that only male cops were on duty (since more than half of police tend to be men) and a woman needed arrested?

Don't officers have bodycams anyway, and if you think an arrest has been excessive in force you can make a complaint and request the bodycam footage? Or is that just in America?

But if you think it would be helpful go ahead and ask your local MP or MSP to push for it to become law. Interesting to see how far it would go.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 30/09/2021 13:11

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 30/09/2021 13:09

@Pumperthepumper

The person I feel for is the officer who was trying to do his job and was pounced on by another party who could easily, in a split second, have went from what she was doing, hitting and pulling, to a kick to the officers head

Or his stomach?

Don't assault an officer then 🤷‍♀️
Pumperthepumper · 30/09/2021 13:05
@pumperthepumper I didn't say that there was nothing he could have done differently. Did I? I said that I don't care that he was heavy handed and that she shouldn't have been assaulting a police officer and that she got kicked because of her actions.
She didn’t though. She got kicked because he, a police officer with a huge amount of power, was violent to her.

Rainbow decals on cars, ££££ on Stonewall membership, hours spent recording daft videos

Yeah I don't buy the resource issue either, more a problem of how they choose to use resource.

@FrancescaContini not derailing a thread at all, I made a point which was very in line with the thread and I'm subsequently replying to people who replied to that comment. Bye.

Applemaggot · 30/09/2021 13:04

RE: the video, the female police officer ran in and clearly didn’t view that girl as a threat. In no way was that kick to the stomach the appropriate first reaction. He could have easily subdued her in another way.

My adoptive daughter’s birth mum was kicked in the stomach by a man - unfortunately she was pregnant with my AD at the time, this resulted in my AD being born at 27 weeks - she shouldn’t be here now. She spent 3 months in SCBU and at 6 years old, she still has issues that she will have to learn to live with. The man in question probably doesn’t even remember doing it.
