Lammy… again!

Apparently an adult male can get a cervix through hormones and surgery!

Who knew?

I’m equally embarrassed for him and bloody livid that this moron is in government.

@TatoAndBeans It seems to be a back of the fag packet policy.

@MissLucyEyelesbarrow

Labour are taking up the space where an opposition should be

Exactly right. They are a dying party - deservedly so.

Hear hear
MrsWinkly · 29/09/2021 11:04

I was listening to him wittering on about violence against women and all the super-duper things Labour would do to keep women safe. Funny that he hasn't quite made the link between self-id and obliterating the fucking meagre safeguards women currently have. I nearly bit into my coffee mug listening to his hypocrisy. Still, no surprises here from Labour really.
endofagain Yes to disenfranchised women setting up a party. Impossible in this climate but we can dream.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 29/09/2021 11:01

@RoyalCorgi

It's interesting that he's waded into the debate without understanding it. Say what you like about Emily Thornberry, but she has understood that the objection to the phrase "only women have cervixes" is that trans men also have a cervix. Lammy hasn't grasped this at all, so he thinks it's about trans women having medical procedures to create a cervix. Which would, frankly, be insane. What's the point in having a cervix if you haven't got a uterus?
Maybe he has it confused with clitoris. Both things that only women have, beginning with c.

Or maybe the other c-word.

WomaninBoots · 29/09/2021 11:00

That's a very good point Jojoba... how many of these politicians getting flustered by the population distribution of the cervix could actually find one on a map.

7H9g5Kj · 29/09/2021 11:00

He sounds very transphobic as he clearly thinks transwomen aren’t women, judging by that ludicrous answer.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 29/09/2021 11:00

I've checked and David Lammy is old enough to be my father. So surely he's the dinosaur, not me?

TheElementsSong · 29/09/2021 10:59

To be fair, Lammy probably thinks "vaginas = fuck-holes for the all-important cock" then "cervixes = ends of fuck-hole for the all-important cock" Angry

JojobaFromOctober · 29/09/2021 10:56

Surely the next question someone needs to ask him is "What is a cervix?" Could be enlightening to hear the answer.

It's as embarrassing as those people who think women piss out of their vaginas or can hold their periods in or something. Aren't women mysterious!

[quote PurgatoryOfPotholes]This is him on Radio 5 today. Well worth a listen/watch. Don't throw anything...

Fitt · 29/09/2021 10:54

Why does Lammy consider his ageism to be a legitimate form of prejudice?

endofagain · 29/09/2021 10:51

I wish the sensible women in the labour party would set up a separate party. I would vote for them. I am disenfranchised at the moment, just as women were disenfranchised a hundred years ago. There is just a different way of achieving it this time.

Kosmoceratops · 29/09/2021 10:46

Another privileged Labour Party politician (like Lisa Nandy) who consistently harks back to an imaginary deprived childhood. He has benefitted at every turn from his Guyanese heritage - scholarship to an exclusive private school, entry to SOAS and the first black Briton to study at Harvard law school.

Must have failed biology O level though.

TatoAndBeans · 29/09/2021 10:45

@PiglingBlonde

Lanny also had the 'brilliant' idea yesterday that city solicitors should each give 35 free hours to help get rape convictions up.

I'm all in favour of a windfall tax on city firm profits which would be used to support legal aid firms but Lammy's idea is completely ridiculous:

  1. very few city solicitors do criminal work and when they do it is corporate or regulatory (much of which doesn't go to court). A mergers and acquisitions specialist is going to be less than useless on a criminal trial;

  2. 35 hours across the year will not provide continuity of support so potentially victims having to tell their story over and over again with no progress;

  3. criminal law is a vital part of a functioning legal system which should be properly funded, not passed over to rich kids on holiday.

Please tell me this was just his random musings and not a proposed policy? The state of the Shadow Cabinet….. it breaks my heart that their incompetence is going to get us another 5 years of Tory cronyism. But seriously, if the Shadow Justice Secretary cannot see what a ridiculous idea this is (when even lay-people like me can) Labour are fucked.

Agree with @Fariha31, they just need to step the fuck away now, split up into the Momentum party and a centre-left party. As it is, the dwindling pool of talent in the party is being drowned out by the likes of Lammy, Rayner, Nandy etc who are only there to appease Momentum and stop a leadership challenge.

Cabinfever10 · 29/09/2021 10:45

And people wonder why Labour can't get elected

Ghostsintheshelf · 29/09/2021 10:44

It's just a continuation of language being hijacked. If woman can include men, and males can be female, and periods can mean the tummy upsets that men get from taking hormones, I'm sure cervix can stretch to mean the top of a neovagina - or even a toenail, if that would stop certain people getting their feelings hurt.

ByGrabtharsHammerWhatASavings · 29/09/2021 10:41

I'm continually amazed by how low the level of anatomical/medical science knowledge in the general population is, even amongst really well educated people. I mean, I get that the finer points of embryology and genetics aren't exactly common knowledge but they aren't super complicated either if you're motivated to learn about them. If you're reasonably bright then you should be able to teach yourself at least the basics if it's something that interests you, and if you're relying heavily on that kind of information in an argument then you'd think that it would interest you. So when I hear TRAs spouting absolutely garbage about super complicated chromosomes and different DSDs and what is and is isn't achievable via SRS, stuff that is obviously false and easily disprovable, I can only conclude that one of three things is true: 1) they don't understand what they're talking about and they aren't smart enough to find out, 2) they don't understand what they're talking about and they aren't interested enough to find out, or 3) they know what they're saying is wrong and they're just flat out lying about it. Which leads me to question, which of these 3 people is David Lammy?

Sexnotgender · 29/09/2021 10:40

@endofagain

It comes back to the same point about the changing language on screening publicity. If a highly privileged, educated man has no clue what a cervix is, how can a poorly educated girl/ woman, or one who doesn't speak much English, be expected to understand that she is a "Person with a cervix".
Exactly. It absolutely infuriates me. By being “inclusive” we possibly exclude women with English as a second language, or those who have poor educational attainment, or have a learning disability or… like David, have zero idea what a cervix even is or if they have one.

@Doglicks

I went to school with him. He peddles this "born and brought up on the mean streets of Tottenham" nonsense, but he was actually a full boarder at The Kings Cathedral School in Peterborough, and was a chorister in the Cathedral choir. I have a cassette tape of him singing "Old Father Time" in a high soprano solo, from a school play in 1985. Barely went home apart from 3 times a year for 7 years. Then off to Oxford and then Harvard. When exactly was he down living the rough life in the ghetto, that he bases his politics on?

(Sorry that was just an aside from your thread) :-)

Oh, that makes me feel a bit sorry for him.

Only briefly! Thank goodness he's here to tell us we can't have any rights because of us being dinosaurs!

BlackForestCake · 29/09/2021 10:36

Endofagain that's a really good point and perhaps making that point again and again would mean something positive comes out of this embarrassing gaffe.

Fitt · 29/09/2021 10:35

When asked if only women have a cervix he replies transwomen can too.

So quite clearly he does NOT consider them to be women.

He got that bit right!

So

Gastonia · 29/09/2021 10:34

On a positive note, my recent change of name to that of a dinosaur seems to have been strangely prescient. Grin

So you’re saying your school has a good singing programme but is terrible at teaching biology?😆

Honestly, I despair about this guy. How can he be so stupid?
