Labour's batshit opinions on women's rights

Conference season is highlighting some interesting opinions from Labour mps on women's rights (although when asked about women's rights they always turn this into a discussion on trans issues)

I thought it would be useful to collate into one thread, feel free to add.

Starmer 'Only women have a cervix' is, "Something that should not be said."

@PoisoningPigeons

Alex Sobel MP in a now deleted tweet said women should have no single sex spaces

That's my brave and stunning MP Angry

At least it's clear though, none of the waffle there. I have some respect for that.

Jesus wept.
Genuinely, I don’t believe the UK public are on board with the reality this whatsoever, if they realise what it actually means for women and girls.

StarryGazeyEyes · 28/09/2021 11:41

I'm really pissed off that I decided to leave Labour a few months ago, after a lifetime of being a supporter. I'd give a lot to be able to tell them where to go all over again! What on earth have they come to :(.

Labour MP Barry Gardiner has told a constituent that not allowing a male access to a women's space such as a changing room when he says he is a woman is the equivalent of the forced segregation of black Africans in South Africa in the 1960s and 1970s

twitter.com/ripx4nutmeg/status/1442377290185203714

Barry denies this, and posts the letter on twitter, which shows that is exactly what he did twitter.com/BarryGardiner/status/1442598243095941122

From another thread

Nicky Campbell asked if someone with a penis was a woman this morning. It was to a Labour person, presumably male, going by the voice and name( sorry I didn't catch their name, I'd never heard of them before) just before 8 am on 5 live. He followed it up by asking if a woman with a penis should be in women's places such as prisons.

More sputtering from Labour as a reply, with a smattering of most marginalised, and toxic, and so on and so forth.

That may have been Nick Thomas-Symonds,Shadow Home Secretary

It was indeed Nick Thomas-Symonds!
RoyalCorgi · 28/09/2021 10:57

The fact they are all reading from a script,

The script seems to go: "Um, er, it's very complicated. I don't want to answer that. Er, er, trans people are the most marginalised people in the country. Er, er, please can we talk about something else [frightened look in eyes]."

GrandmaMazur · 28/09/2021 10:56

@EdgeOfACoin

You're correct, OvaHere. I feel like Lisa Nandy has pledged her allegiance to this one family and promised them her unfailing support. It's the 'I have a lovely trans friend' narrative which underpins her entire attitude towards policy.

She is so blinkered, it is dangerous. I know people who could drink alcohol and drive perfectly well afterwards. We don't base drink driving policy on the people who are really good at driving while drink. For good reason!

Why so focused on this one constituent though? Doesn’t she have any female constituents who have been raped and might want single sex services, or who have been victims of domestic violence and might want single sex refuges etc? Has she not met any of them at all?

Amazing to see them all floundering like this. I think it's partly because some of them are too stupid to understand what the debate is about, too incurious to find out, and too frightened of trans activists to deviate from the new orthodoxy

Its probably partly a result of our political system. MPs aren't rewarded for interrogating policy. They build their careers on following the party line and voting as they are told.

deadleaves · 28/09/2021 10:21

I’m another one who will be voting Tory for the first time in my voting life (25 years)

I voted Tory in the last election. The candidate was the only one who responded to my query about their position on sex based rights. So they got my vote., Not voting for cowards who won't even explain their position. (Actually Labour did respond but cowardly waited till AFTER the election).

jenny5000 · 28/09/2021 10:21

But are they out of touch with society? Sadly, I'm not so sure.

ChattyLion · 28/09/2021 10:20

I thought Labour got on board with male sexual rights and genderism because they were courting the youth and/or privileged middle class vote. Which they’ve done/retained with some success, but now with Starmer in charge to get actually into elected power they need to be ready to be elected by everyone of any age.

So the gender identity issue, a classic one of drawing support from people in a position of privilege enough not to need to ever rely on single sex public services and/or relying on support from the life inexperience and the political idealism of youth, is a catastrophic electoral fuck up on Labour’s part.

And if Labour don’t want to get into power and don’t want to be an effective opposition either (or can’t be due to constantly looking inwards) WTF are they?

PronounssheRa · 28/09/2021 10:18

@Fariha31

The fact they are all reading from a script, litterly it seems to me indicates he is trying for a Cambell style obiediance push.
There is an actual script. Look at the clip around 20 seconds in Rachel starts reading from something on her desk. twitter.com/LBC/status/1442380463298027520

Wow, they are so out of step with society as a whole, running scared of saying the wrong thing and not looking super-woke at all times. What have they become? I've never voted Labour and after this, I most definitely never will. Shame on them.

Fariha31 · 28/09/2021 10:02

I think Starmer has decided to come down on the TRA side, he thinks it will be a figleaf as he purges the left.
What a dumdum, he thinks its politically harmless and will provide cover while getting rid of left wing members.
About as politically harmless and ditching Brexit lets hope.

RoyalCorgi · 28/09/2021 09:59

Back in the Blair days, Labour comms was a tightly run ship. Alastair Campbell would decide the exact wording of the party line and no MP could deviate from it publicly. Anyone who did was taken out the back and shot (metaphorically).

Amazing to see them all floundering like this. I think it's partly because some of them are too stupid to understand what the debate is about, too incurious to find out, and too frightened of trans activists to deviate from the new orthodoxy.

dianebrewster · 28/09/2021 09:58

@Deliriumoftheendless

My (Labour controlled) town is trying to pull itself out of high unemployment, high rates of teen pregnancy, very high rates of permanent exclusions from schools, high rates of male suicide, food banks, homeless people on the increase, businesses folding and low wages but yeah, the most important thing is minding who you say has a cervix.
Well yes because it tells us a hell of a lot about the politicians and the party eg any of the following...

They have lost touch with reality.
They are willing to say whatever they think will make them popular.
They are not critical thinkers.
They are unwilling to engage in debate by first listening to their opponents views.
.... etc

This issue is a litmus test for who many of us would vote for BECAUSE it shows up the difference between those willing to engage and those who simply dismiss opposing views.

Iv just cancelled my membership and am feeling a bit all over the place.

I think you're probably in good company on this thread Thanks I left in 2019

Jaysmith71 · 28/09/2021 09:37

Lucy Powell, another one bites the dust.

"....some of the most abused, marginalised, scared, suicidal..." (etc etc etc)

Fariha31 · 28/09/2021 09:30

@Ereshkigalangcleg

If you dont get why women want rights and respect and safety in their society, why are you on the feminism board?

I think that was maybe a criticism of Labour for their priorities?

Opps, sorry to Delirium. I missunderstood. Iv just cancelled my membership and am feeling a bit all over the place.
jenny5000 · 28/09/2021 09:18

Obviously, this is batshit and infuriating. But I'm still unclear about why Labour is doing this. Have they decided this isn't a vote loser or that on balance, keeping younger/urban voters and members on board is more important than our votes? Does their polling suggest that most people don't care about this enough to change votes?

Either way, the strategy seems bonkers to me given the seats they'll need to win. Am I missing something?

Fariha31 · 28/09/2021 09:11

@EdgeOfACoin

I've written to my Labour MP expressing my concern about these issues and asking her to confirm that she will stand up for women's right to single-sex spaces.

I would suggest that everyone write to their MP. Make it clear that this is something that matters to women.

Already have, twice. Got now response. I guess Im lucky tho, as friends had had the 'trans are the most marginalised' response. I actually thought she was better than that. I will be holding my nose and voting tory untill any other party can name a woman as a woman.
