We must have a tolerent debate.... Trans community are the most marginalised community of all

....and 'Only women have a cervix' is, "Something that should not be said."

I saw your post EdgeOfACoin and I'm shocked it was deleted.

merrymouse · 26/09/2021 19:18

Julia Long just asked Emily Thornberry "Emily, do only women have cervixes?" Emily's reply "My cousin has a cervix and he's a man".

But anybody giving Emily Thornberry’s cousin medical treatment needs to know that this isn’t true.

Datun · 26/09/2021 19:17

@PronounssheRa

I suspect Indias understanding of what a cervix is, and what a cervix actually is, are two very different things.

I agree with a previous posters observation that India seems to be spiralling.

On the Julia Hartley Brewer show a couple of years ago in a discussion about prisons, India seem to think that transwomen were just like women, because there were 140 women in prison for sex offences, and a similar number for transwomen.

Not at all grasping that transwomen come from a cohort of about, what is it, a quarter of a million? And women come from a cohort of what is it 25, 30 million?

ScreamingMeMe · 26/09/2021 19:17

"Trans" and "Onlywomenhaveacervix" have been trending on twitter all day. I doubt that this is what Keir wanted to be the take away from his interview.

ANewCreation · 26/09/2021 19:17

My theory is that Labour don't actually want to be in power at the moment. I don't know why.

There is a wide open goal - we have an openly corrupt government, the tail end of a global pandemic, a climate emergency, a self inflicted worsening of our economy together with a venal leader who seems at his happiest lying and who blows with the wind with regard to policy - and instead of taking them on, KS is deliberately booting the ball off the pitch into the stands to the rapturous applause of a bunch of blue hairs...

Beyond parody

Julia Long just asked Emily Thornberry "Emily, do only women have cervixes?" Emily's reply "My cousin has a cervix and he's a man".

Whatthechicken · 26/09/2021 19:08

@PronounssheRa I said that on another thread, looking at IW tweets in recent days, I don’t think IW is in a good place, and I don’t think IW is getting the traction and validation IW expects. I think a lot of followers didn’t take too kindly to her tweets about JHB.

Datun · 26/09/2021 19:07

To me, this really feels like critical mass. Finally.

Many people would accommodate transwomen (because let's face it, it's transwomen, not transmen), by being courteous, in terms of pronouns etc.

But saying that women are not allowed to identify their sex and that men have cervices is just a departure from any kind of reality.

Sticking to the party line, in the teeth of mass challenge, just makes it all worse. It looks like unhinged zealotry.

Which, of course, it is. And many women saw it coming.

I can remember talking about sport, I think it was, and being scoffed at with posters saying oh come on, datun, men would never be allowed to compete with women...

@EdgeOfACoin

Okay. Mumsnet have said they are looking at reinstating my post. Let's see.
I’d be interested to see if it’s reinstated

If its not its quite the most ludicrous thing i have ever ever heard on mumsnet and ive lurked on loads of brexit threads

Imnobody4 · 26/09/2021 19:04

And another one John McDonnell
womansplaceuk.org/2021/09/26/john-mcdonnell-on-lbc/amp/?__twitter_impression=true&s=09

John McDonnell was asked the same question, “Is it transphobic to say only women have a cervix” Answer “It all depends on the context”
The same question was asked in various ways..read on for all the ways ‘context’ can be used.

I honestly believe many, many more summits have been reached this weekend. I told my husband about Marr this morning and he said ‘well that’s it then for Labour’. He thought what Starmer said was worse than the ‘bodies with vaginas’. I disagree, but whatever, scales are falling everywhere, light is streaming in. I feel women have been seriously under attack in these last two weeks, but I think it’s ‘jumped the shark’ (is that the phrase?) now. Doesn’t help us politically in the short term mind, and we are relying on the appalling Tories to hold the line on this issue, and if the ‘TWAW’ people all double down then we are particularly vulnerable, but I do have heart that the majority of the population now know that this is complete batshit.

@donquixotedelamancha

India believes India has a cervix? The mind boggles!

The question is: who's cervix is it and where is the rest of them?

"It rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again."

This didn't make me laugh. Have they all rehearsed this.

ANewCreation · 26/09/2021 18:57

Well, cervix = neck so technically we all have a neck...

SpindleWorld · 26/09/2021 18:57

It's inverted penile tissue that needs periodic testing for HPV-related cancer.

Sophoclesthefox · 26/09/2021 18:52

@Datun

I have a cervix. Get checked by the NHS every few years. Demeaning talking about it @AndrewMarr9. You absolutely know this a work-around way of calling women who are T men, leading into all the other bigotry. #Marr

This is the problem. Saying only women have cervices is not a 'work around'. It's not code, it's not an agenda, it's not reading between the lines.

It's a fact. It's a fact that certain people do not want us to say. We are not the ones with the agenda.

Absolutely. Willoughby’s interpretation is an absolute poster child for what a bad faith engagement that jumps immediately to the worst possible interpretation looks like.
MidsomerMurmurs · 26/09/2021 18:51

@deadleaves

Brendan Clarke-Smith MP *@Bren4Bassetlaw6h* Only women have a cervix. There, I said it. It’s not difficult. Women also have a right to women-only spaces. Speaking up in defence of women’s rights doesn’t mean we can’t respect how others wish to live their lives

It shouldn't be difficult, no.

And so the Tories are waking up to the open goal. See also Javid earlier on. Expect much much more of this. And Labour will deserve the ridicule.

Where does India think the cervix is?

I couldn't show anyone my cervix without the aid of a medical bed, speculum and strong lighting.

Alekto · 26/09/2021 18:49

A few years ago a GP surgery of my acquaintance in a UK university city was put in the position of fending off demands from a man of diverse gender identity who wanted a smear test performed. I do not know where he wanted the brush inserted.

[quote OldCrone]They took exactly the stance a centre left party would be expected to take and the stance logically consistent with left wing ideology.

Why is this 'expected' of centre left parties? And why is it logically consistent with left wing ideology? Left wing parties such as the communists tend to be against this.

The present debate around self-identification conflates “sex” and “gender” and fails to understand that challenging the specific discrimination faced by trans people is not served by undermining resistance to the centuries-old oppression of women as a biological sex.

For women, the result is that their collective rights as a group are currently being undermined through the weaponisation of a post-modern identity politics, focused solely on the rights of individuals.
