Not enjoying the Janey Godley pile on....

Haven't seen a thread on this, although there is a bit on the end of the NS thread at the moment.

But Godley was very outspoken against anyone questioning the trans rights agenda, and is someone who gleefully and happily reports, blocks and let's lose a barrage of very foul mouthed abuse to anyone who disagrees with her on twitter.

However, I am not enjoying her twitter take down this evening. I would much prefer a complete turn around and all the oldest voices to use this as an opportunity to call for a more reasonable debate.

That's how I understood your post and Sinha's comment ItllBeOverByChristmas.

Ekofisk · 10/09/2021 09:36

Godley Tweeted more than 200 times at 50 Cent in 2012, picked up on this thread in 2019:

KimikosNightmare · 10/09/2021 09:36

The hypocrisy on display by Mhairi Hunter is awesome.

ItllBeOverByChristmas I haven't seen anything criticising Godley on the basis you suggest.

Not enjoying the Janey Godley pile on....
ItllBeOverByChristmas · 10/09/2021 09:32

I simply meant that my suspicion, based on Sinha's tweet is that some incels/misogynists have gleefully taken the opportunity to make grim misogynist attacks on a woman under the fig leaf of her being in the wrong. We've all seen the sort of thing that happens - personal sex-based attacks which have nothing to do with the pretext of the thing that she did wrong.

Not talking about people who just point out how wrong the things she said were.

merrymouse · 10/09/2021 09:30

You'd think the bright young things in the Scottish Parly would have all this covered.

Agree, but the assumption seems to be that somebody who regularly spouts off on Twitter must be fine if they seem to be in the right tribe, not that somebody who regularly spouts off on Twitter could be a liability and may at the very least have upset lots of people. The naivety is surprising.

@ItllBeOverByChristmas

I haven't really followed this story at all, not being Scottish, but I do follow Paul Sinha, who seems to have been on the receiving end of one unpleasant tweet from JG, and his comment was. "Checking the Janey Godley tag. When incel meets cancel it is pretty damn ugly."

I can't face checking myself, but can imagine that this has given an excuse to the usual suspects to pile on in a fully misogynistic way.

FloralBunting's post explains it well. Who are "the usual suspects"?

What is "misogynistic" about pointing out how odious her tweets were? And what a hypocrite she , and for that matter, her apologists are?

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 10/09/2021 09:19

Glinner is a bit gleeful but then I can see his point. Interesting comments, worth reading, including pointing me to this:

Schadenfreude is understandable but I find that post rebarbative.

Yes, to the Hunter comment and her belief in her unwavering compass in allocating redemption.

I've also seen an interesting comment (that I don't think is equivalent) challenging who gets to write the handbook of acceptable behaviour when Sturgeon is shouting and heckling in the govt. chamber.

@Ekofisk

The journo is Jamie Ross - he’s a Scottish reporter based in London, formerly Scotland correspondent for Buzzfeed and ex BBC Scotland.
Thanks for the explanation.
FloralBunting · 10/09/2021 08:53

So, how are we defining 'pile on' here? Those of us who give no fucks about Godley are being tutted at for our callous dismissal of her 'heartfelt apology' because it's wrong for lots of people to angrily criticize racist and ableist language?

Because I thought a pile on was when a person with a very large and loyal following picks on someone smaller with whom they have an disagreement and that person then has to deal with an avalance of notifications and abuse.

I see it happening to small TRA accounts from some GCs who like the argy bargy, and I avoid it because it looks like a complete waste of time, so if you meant that sort of pile on, then sure, not great, best avoided.

But I am quite happy for shits like Boyle and Godley to see very clearly what people think of their nasty statements. That's what should happen when people say these things. It's not about whether or not her apology is genuine. I don't care either way. She definitely should apologize, but apologies aren't magic wands that make everything disappear. If it is genuine and she is honestly mortified that she said those things, then she'll be agreeing with everyone who is reiterating how bloody awful it is to say those things.

Yes, the schadenfreude is one thing. But this is not 'a pile on'. She's getting just desserts and everyone who is racist, ableist, homophobic and sexist should.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 10/09/2021 08:50

@KittenKong

I love the idea of her apologising to Snoop and her saying ‘and who the hell are you?’
I may be wrong but I take Godley was abhorrently inappropriate in her comments about young, black performers on a television competition?

And there seem to be (possibly very unpleasant) Twitter users to whom she responded and directed (?) others.

They might not accept her apology but she needs to make those apologies not least because she currently has some understanding of what it is like to be criticised to a large audience.

And, yes to the sinister overtones of the people who are convinced that they have an infallible moral compass for deciding who should be excluded from 'communities' (after failing re-education).

MorrisZapp · 10/09/2021 08:50

I thought her voice overs were brilliant, but then she came for the feminists and I got blocked.

Sturgeon giving her a paid job reeks of cronyism and the lack of due diligence is mind boggling.

Someone called it 'offence archaeology', digging deep into someone's social media to pull out something cancel worthy. You'd think the bright young things in the Scottish Parly would have all this covered.

Who wins? Cancel culture keeps on thriving, because it's just the sweetest feeling when the people who love to play the good guys shitting on the baddies turn out to be just as hateful themselves.

Godley cancelled feminism so she can enjoy her erasure as far as I'm concerned, but as a human being I hope she's OK.

KittenKong · 10/09/2021 08:41

(She was sorry that she got called out..., not sorry that she did it).

KittenKong · 10/09/2021 08:41

Sorry she got called out. Like bringing on board Chubby Brown or Bernard Manning for a public facing campaign.

KimikosNightmare · 10/09/2021 08:39

@QueenPeary

Hmmmm - but there are numerous slebs with plenty of good advice and coaching who can only manage rubbish apologies.

Ugh I feel like I’m still coming over like i’m on her side and I’m not. But I do think if someone apologises, you can’t somehow magically know it’s not real. Plenty of people do that crappy half apology (“sorry IF I offended anyone”) and get lambasted for it not being a proper, full apology. She’s done a proper full apology - it can’t make up for her nastiness but it is a full apology. And now you say well it’s just an act.

This the kind of pile-on mentality I don’t like. The person did wrong so they must be destroyed and anyone who doesn’t agree with the pile on is also fair game.

Not buying the "full apology" at all. She is odious. She knew perfectly well how vile she was being and she intended to hurt. Her apology is simply better written than most.
KittenKong · 10/09/2021 08:32

Him not her. Snoop...

KittenKong · 10/09/2021 08:31

OperationDessertStorm · 10/09/2021 08:31

“Removing them from communities” sounds sinister as fuck.

QueenPeary · 10/09/2021 08:31

I agree the individuals she’s abused should get apologies too. Same goes for frankie Boyle, etc.

KittenKong · 10/09/2021 08:28

@Bluesheep8

Never heard of her
She’s been on Have I Got News for you a few times. Plays the professional weegie.
RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 10/09/2021 08:28

Should have refreshed as ive basically said what embarrassing said….I…got distracted by the tv

KittenKong · 10/09/2021 08:27

I can’t stand her - she is cringey and reminds me of the embarrassing weegie auntie that turns up at family dos, gets ratted, gets loud, then tries to snog the vicar.

This is what the Scottish government want - the public stocks for anyone found to have hurt anyone’s feelz.

Marion Milar has been dragged to court for less, to much cheering from people like Janey.

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 10/09/2021 08:27

@ChaToilLeam

She’s awful, vociferous against anyone disagreeing with her agenda, and a bit thick. Afraid I cannot muster up much sympathy for her, seeing as how she is such a fan of cancel culture herself.
She obviously been enjoying cancel culture up til now

She should be dead chuffed that its still working well

I know people use the words ‘pile on’ on here, which seems to mean ‘everyone is disagreeing with me’ and is telling me so

Is it the same sort of thing on twitter? Or due to the set up is it worse?
