Gay man 'bullied' off Manchester Pride for wearing LGB Alliance hat and t-shirt

LibDem activist delighted by this. Here are two of her tweets. The gay man who turned up in an LGB hat and t-shirt was allegedly advised by police to leave for his own safety and seems to have had the hat stolen.

Another young fool tweeted that 'bullying the guy in the LGB Alliance shirt who came to the protest march is my favourit part of Pride so far xx'. He has since deleted this (possibly because he is now sober and/or has seen how many people had reported this to his employers) and now claims he was just chanting 'Trans lives matter!'. 'Bullying' is an odd choice of words for this. How could anyone think admitting publicly to 'bullying' was a good look?

The LGB Alliance man has been advised that people shouting at him is actually assault if he wants to take it further. Doesn't sound like he does, though.

Unedifying, to say the least.

What about the cats? Will no one think of the cats?

alkanet · 29/08/2021 16:06

April is a dachshund enthusiast? Does that mean she's a raging spanielist? (Not very inclusive.🤔)

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 29/08/2021 16:02

@beastlyslumber

It's unapologetically divisive in nature and the complete antithesis of what Pride is about - inclusivity. So I don't really get why this man thought it was the time and place to promote division and exclusion at an event that centres on inclusion.

Pride isn't about 'inclusivity.' Being gay is exclusive by nature. In fact, all sexuality is exclusive (with the exception of pan-sexuality, I guess.) Pride used to be GAY and excluded straight people. You could go along I guess but it wasn't for you. It was a gay event for gay people: i.e. homosexuals. The point was not 'inclusivity' but GAY PRIDE.

Now Pride is full of straight people pretending to be 'queer' and kicking out any actual homosexuals who they don't think the men's rights movement should take over gay spaces.

It was literally NEVER about inclusivity.

Well said.

April is a dog? She identifies as a sausage dog? Wtf? Is this some kind of joke?
Although trans species or Otherkin is definitely a 'thing', I think in this case it just means April is an enthusiast of the Dachshund breed, not that she actually is one. Although, as this is the LibDems website, I'm willing to be corrected . Wink

@FloralBunting

I think the gist of the pro-bully crowd is that 'Sure, you can be homosexual. But if you are clear that means you are exclusively same sex attracted and you don't at least keep that quiet when there are people of the opposite sex around that don't like that, and you dare to suggest that there are some conflicts between being homosexual and being a Genderist, you should expect to be intimidated and threatened, because that's the kind thing to do.'
Quite.
Helleofabore · 29/08/2021 15:58

One of the key messages of LGB Alliance is that people should have freedom of speech. Well, what do you think this crowd were doing - exactly that, exercising their right to free speech.

Even those caught up in the action had the honesty to admit what it was… bullying! A crowd targeting one gay man and he walked away and they followed.

But maybe the cold light of honesty is uncomfortable to some eyes.

RedDogsBeg · 29/08/2021 15:57

That crowd were a whisker away from being a lynch mob and the fact you are applauding there actions says so much about you and the rabid, dangerous intolerance of TRAs and their supporters.

yourhairiswinterfire · 29/08/2021 15:56

The LGB Alliance was formed in opposition to trans issues being included in with gay issues wasn't it?

Same-sex attraction was re-written as same ''gender'' attraction, and homosexuals (mainly lesbians at the time) were being sexually harassed, abused and hounded from their own spaces by people telling them they were bigots if they wouldn't accept penis, telling them to just ''try it to see, because you might like dick after all''. Hmm

They were sick of these conversion therapy fans telling them they needed to ''get over their genital preferences'', and so formed their own group, now a legally registered charity.

So they were set up to welcome those sick of being abused by homophobes within their own ''community'', who seem to think homophobia is fine as long as you chant ''trans rights'', wave a flag and call yourself 'queer' when you do it.

Jorriss · 29/08/2021 15:56

Yes well these these homophobic bullies can fuck off to the far side of fuck, and then fuck off some more.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 29/08/2021 15:54

Ah here they come, the ppl who think same sex attraction is just so mean and hand waving away the fear that gay & lesbian ppl feel about having what it means to be gay & lesbian redefined

Are we to take it then that no group representing LGB people only is allowed to exist to support the interests of only those who define themselves as same sex attracted? And those trans people who belong to the Alliance are to be ignored too?

AfternoonToffee · 29/08/2021 15:53

That is not how free speech works.

This caused me to raise an eyebrow:

twitter.com/CormacS63/status/1431970759048634368

in which the charming Mr Smith wonders whether LGBA is "2 twisted dykes or something more?"

If you check out the bio of this professional communicator and diplomat and follow the link you find:

The stakes are higher than ever and media missteps are legendary career breakers. But, there’s a much more common risk: failing to seize the opportunity that an interview or media appearance offers. What if no-one remembers you or anything you had to say? Good media training makes you memorable for the right reasons.

Baird’s CMC brings almost four decades of media training experience globally. We’ll make sure your people get complex messages across under pressure.

Trans activism destroys people's reason.

What is divisive is saying that same-sex attraction doesn't exist and only gender matters. How do you think that works for people who are attracted to people of the same sex?

How is it inclusive to harass a gay man to the extent that he needs a police escort to leave before the howling mob physically attack him?

One of the key messages of LGB Alliance is that people should have freedom of speech. Well, what do you think this crowd were doing - exactly that, exercising their right to free speech.

You have a very odd idea about what freedom of speech means. You seem to be saying that a gay man can't wear a t-shirt showing support for a group which fights for the rights of LGB people.

What the mob were doing was harassing someone for exercising his right to free speech.

Jorriss · 29/08/2021 15:52

Is that your version of free speech? Hundreds of people intimidating a gay man and stealing from him? Because those people don't like his clothing? You think that behaviour is acceptable do you? Because to me it looks like intimidation with a very real threat of phyiscal violence. So much so that the police needed to move him to a place of safety.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 29/08/2021 15:52

Exactly what Bilinda ?

Hate to disagree with someone?

Hate to have a sexual preference?

Hate to have a sexual preference that is single sex?

Hate not to include every cohort of humans in the aims of a single charity?

Exactly what?

Artichokeleaves · 29/08/2021 15:51

What was the intent behind his t-shirt and hat? I can only think it was to say something along the lines of 'Trans people should not be welcomed at Pride events'

That's a rather radical interpretation of the text. Grin Bit of a crowbar needed to see how the two things connect.

But yes, helpful to see how homosexuality is interpreted by some in this rather oddly paranoid way, that stating a personal choice to have a sex based sexual orientation equals being actively threatening to people who are trans.

There isn't a way to stop this being homophobic. It is.

beastlyslumber · 29/08/2021 15:51

"And yet there were hundreds of gay men there who weren't kicked out so it's almost like the issue wasn't that he was gay, but that he turned up wearing apparel from a hate group to an event supposed to celebrate the very people that hate group targets"

How do you know he was the only person wearing that Tshirt? Did you personally check them all?
The issue was that he ran into a gobby, homophobic group of TRAs. You know - the ones on film shown bullying a gay man to the point where he needed police protection from them.

What was the intent behind his t-shirt and hat? I can only think it was to say something along the lines of 'Trans people should not be welcomed at Pride events' . Yeah that's really not going to go down well with 99% of Pride attenders.

There's a weird logic from some in this thread that these circumstances were homophobic because he is gay. I imagine there were hundreds of gay men there, I wonder why they felt welcome and this man didn't?

One of the key messages of LGB Alliance is that people should have freedom of speech. Well, what do you think this crowd were doing - exactly that, exercising their right to free speech.

So are all the single issue trans orgs divisive too because they don't include the LGB?

Is there anyway for an organisation based on shared sexuality to exist without it being transphobic in your eyes?

Are people allowed to be same sex attracted and seek advocacy and representation as they see fit?

HDDD · 29/08/2021 15:48

Are T shirts literal violence?

FloralBunting · 29/08/2021 15:47

There's a video of a few minutes earlier in the march where he is just walking along with a friend and talking, just another person marching.

It's very helpful to have the nasty bunch make it so clear that unapologetic lesbian and gay people are not welcome at Pride events if one of the QT kicks off.

LGB people have the right to organize for their specific issues. If you think that their existence is unacceptable and they should be driven out of Pride, you have simply underlined why LGB Alliance is needed and that Pride is not a safe place for LGB people anymore.

Homophobia is the shorthand for that kind of thinking.

AfternoonToffee · 29/08/2021 15:46

@NoNotMeNoSiree

That bullying verbal abuse and theft was justified

Nowhere have I said that, and don't think anyone else was either.
If you read what you quoted again, you'll see it was in response to '' it's almost like the issue wasn't that he was gay'' bit.

It absolutely 100% implies that it was his fault for turning up in that t-shirt.
