I’ve just followed an ad on here for the Hana contraceptive pill and I was pleased to see that it said it was for women and people with uteruses.

I just wanted to say well done to them on the wording.

It is quite hilarious when looked at objectively.

The movement redefines Woman as something in one’s personality instead of a simple description of physical sex, then finds it needs ever more hair-splitting labels for all the people who are not women by the new definition but still need to be included in the group that now has no name.

Keeping the word woman as a simple physical descriptor and putting the effort into refuting cultural gender constructions tied to sex would have been so much simpler and also genuinely progressive.

And of course, there’s no reason that keeping the word Woman’s original and useful meaning precludes the gender identity currently labelled as woman also existing and have its own, separate name as well.

(However, given that we are where we are and gender ideology has managed to make an incoherent mess out of a previously useful and indeed, when it comes to fighting sexism, essential word, Hana’s phrasing is fair enough)

A more liberal and progressive society for whom exactly? Women? By denying biological sex exists and women need to move over and be more understanding? By making it impossible to talk about sexism as you can't identify the group of humans who are more likely to experience it? By obscuring women in healthcare even more?

Don't make me laugh. First change the language for men and people with penises, then we can talk.

Enough4me · 28/08/2021 11:10

Why not use the word female then?

If women means women and men, just refer to females TM are still female so it is inclusive for them.

I think you’ll find this movement identifies as being liberal and inclusive, but is in fact regressive, sexist and authoritarian.

As one gets older, one learns that how people describe themselves, and often honestly think of themselves, can be quite different to who they really are, or at least how they act in the world, which from the point of view of everyone who is not them is the thing that matters.

Or more succinctly, if you want to know who someone is, ignore what they say and watch what they do.

CMcA21 · 28/08/2021 11:04

@KittenKong that’s the whole point of contraception really isn’t it

KittenKong · 28/08/2021 11:03

Lord help them of the get pregnant. That won’t work with their narrative will it?

GCmiddle · 28/08/2021 11:01

Who/where are all these men who are having penetrative vaginal sex with people who aren't women ?

CMcA21 · 28/08/2021 10:56

@MrsOvertonsWindow 😂😂😂

@Tibtom a more inclusive and liberal society

Tibtom · 28/08/2021 10:53

the term ‘women and people with uteruses’ is progressive

Progressing to where exactly?

Whatwouldscullydo · 28/08/2021 10:50

Being an adult and human of the female sex class is not an identity but a physical reality.
@AnneLovesGilbert some people are women but don’t have a uterus for medical reasons or have transitioned from male. Hope that helps on educating you on the matter
Not sure you're educating anyone CMcA21 More attempting to indoctrinate people into believing an incoherent regressive ideology ,

CMcA21 · 28/08/2021 10:46

@Whatwouldscullydo irrelevant to you but not to those people who have gender dysphoria or are questioning identity. Not sure why it bothers you if you don’t fall in to that group of people?

ArtemesiaK · 28/08/2021 10:43

I can't believe that there are people out there, having sex with men and knowing that they need contraception, who will still insist that they're not included in the word "woman" and need their own special term!?

Whatwouldscullydo · 28/08/2021 10:42

Woman is not an identity though.

Its a word used to describe females of the human species. That's it.

Contraception is based on sex. Identity is irrelevant

Cailleach1 · 28/08/2021 10:33

Since we're not just doing biological.

Cailleach1 · 28/08/2021 10:33

@EastWestWhosBest

I like that they have the word women there but are also acknowledging that some people who have a uterus don’t identify as a women. I much prefer this wording, with women front and centre, than the removal of the word women all together.
What about Catholics who don't follow the church's teaching on contraception? They should be added if you want to cover multiple identities?

I'm sure there are many more identities who could as validly be put in there.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 28/08/2021 09:39

Under the circumstances, and given the number of enby children of family friends, I have to wonder what wouldn't be distressing to them? Some of them are 'male presenting' or 'female presenting' but others have opted for neutrois.

NotDonna · 28/08/2021 09:34

This still baffles me. Does woman refer to gender rather than sex? And female refer to sex rather than gender?
Are trans men happy to be referred to as female or not? I understand in this instance a female would include children and thus not appropriate.
I think women/people with uteruses (like the / rather than and) as it’s the same group not two different groups.

Whatwouldscullydo · 28/08/2021 09:17

The only reason any of these people can get away with using the phrase " people with uteruses " etc

Is because someone else was the " bad guy" and explained about biological sex.

It infuriates me because they cash in on all the benefits of people they often publically denounce , but they couldn't do it with out us.

KittenKong · 28/08/2021 09:14

‘Identify as’ isn’t the same as is. Why be so coy?
Whatwouldscullydo · 28/08/2021 09:12

Its better than not using the word woman.

However woman just means adult human female so its about sex not identity. So the word woman is already inclusive of all or no gender identities amongst those born female.

Tibtom · 28/08/2021 09:08

As others have said, it is trying to divorce the word woman from its meaning. It is part insidious undermining of language that identifies half the adult population.

EishetChayil · 28/08/2021 08:55

People with uteruses is unnecessary.

I've never seen a Viagra advert targeted at "men and people with penises." Funny, that.

AnneLovesGilbert · 28/08/2021 08:45

There’s nothing remotely funny about dehumanising women as being people who have uteruses. Women who don’t have uteruses aren’t going to be customers for any sort of contraceptive pill. This one, along with all the others, can only be of use to women who have uteruses.

I was hoping to educate myself about how you can have a uterus in a non biological way but sadly that hasn’t happened yet.
