Much as I'd like Edinburgh lesbians to have their own space, taking a look at the founder I'm not sure that this space is going to be it.

@QueenPeary

I mean to be fair a gay bar for "trans lesbians" to meet each other is a good idea and I am not being sneery saying that. The dating pool for them should include only those who consider them women, so that's themselves and any female lesbians who believe TWAW and want to date them (of which there are some, I know one). They could head to that bar and then homosexual lesbians who aren't interested could have their own spaces.

I'm not naive enough to think they would be left alone, but I'd support the setting up of a bar for translesbians to meet each other, which makes total sense. TLs see themselves as women, and they are attracted to women, so dating each other is the obvious solution.

Of course it's totally unclear what this prospective bar owner intends so you can't tell.

I agree, and whoever goes, goes. Anyone who doesn't like the idea, or who the owner rules inadmissible, won't. Whether that leaves a viable business will be an interesting experiment. (Ignoring the fact that it won't happen because an "outpouring of love" won't open a bar, it needs an outpouring of money.)

But the switching back and forth of pronouns in that article does my head in!

And as for this
Can someone please explain what a “non-binary trans lesbian” actually presents as?

Non-binary = neither masculine nor feminine gender identity
Trans = transgendered person (m2f)
Lesbian = person of the female sex attracted sexually to other persons of the female sex.

It just seems like you pick a selection of words and labels that looks good on twitter to prove just how "out-there" you are, deconstructing gender norms, challenging the heteronormative hegemony, shocking your granny. What any of them actually means and whether they are consistent with each other is entirely irrelevant!

@QueenPeary

I read it as “I am a homosexual” being the one thing they felt did qualify them to open a lesbian bar (in the absence of cash, a venue or business sense) - but it’s not clear if by homosexual they mean same sex attraction (which is what homosexual means I.e. male to male attraction in this case) or trans lesbian ie mtf attracted to women.

I thought homosexual was a banned word for genderism types what with its references to sex.

Me too QueenPeary.

I'm no good with money, but am homosexual' so qualified to open a gay bar.

Should go down very well with potential loaners of cash.

I do agree that there are lots of situations where the cause is bigger than the individual. Climate change, refugee support, services for vulnerable people, animal welfare etc etc.

Not sure that this is quite up there with them though.

LizzieMacQueen · 22/08/2021 10:28

So a bar for people born M who now self ID as F who are only sexually attracted to the same as themselves?

So not lesbian then?

Naunet · 22/08/2021 10:23

Well if it goes ahead, a hope a bus load of bearded men turn up every night, identifying as lesbians, so that this idiot has to suffer by their own woke ideology.

‘‘Emily readily admits that she’s not a money person – “I’m no expert on finance,” she says, “I am a homosexual” – ‘

Am I reading something into this or is this person implying being gay makes you bad at finance? Wtf?

Mrsjamin · 22/08/2021 09:54

@Tisha0 exactly. It's like a modern day riddle. I miss the days where words meant something.

Tisha0 · 22/08/2021 09:48

Zeev · 21/08/2021 23:29

Say whaaaat? I've been to a lesbian bar in Edinburgh. In 1998.

magicstar1 · 21/08/2021 22:47

I just find the idea of opening night, and crowd consisting completely of trans non binary “lesbians” to be hilarious. Imagine their disappointment .

LifeIsBusy · 21/08/2021 22:46

@FatAnkles, I live in Edinburgh and can confirm it does accept all walks of life.

Perhaps this person is more annoyed at the lack of diversity in the Edinburgh LGBTQ+ scene as the regular bars are over crowded with straight girls and their gay best boyfriends (nothing wrong with that, it's a safe space for all).

FloralBunting · 21/08/2021 22:38

This is one of the single most bizarre stories I've come across, tbh. Guidelines preclude from a simple precis that would make it as plain as it is, but essentially a person who is of the sex class that typically produces small gametes, and apparently has a heterosexual orientation, has dropped out of a Masters at Uni with a fond hope to set up a lesbian bar with no funding or expertise. Apparently Emily was serious enough about the idea to post about it on the 24th of July where Emily said that Edinburgh really needs a D*ke bar and that Emily would be happy to give it a go.

I think my favourite bit is the way the bollocks pronouns shenanigans make the already incompetent writing almost illegible.

Emily has lived in Edinburgh for the past five years, having been based in Scotland since they moved from Australia aged 15. She considers herself a local, but balk at the suggestion she is “well placed” to start a lesbian bar in Edinburgh.

I mean, deciphering this, sure, I would also baulk at the suggestion Emily is well placed to start a lesbian bar in Edinburgh, for financial reasons, for skills reasons and indeed for the glaringly obvious XY reasons.

“Other people have thought about [opening a lesbian bar in Edinburgh], too,” they say. “It sounds super cheesy, but this is one of those things where the cause is bigger than me.”

Yes, we know.

zanahoria · 21/08/2021 22:35

I am absolutely gutted that I have been banned from this non-existent bar

QueenPeary · 21/08/2021 21:55

They have actually written it as if dropping out of university is in itself an amazing achievement.

"And while the bar is still in the early planning stages, the big hurdle for Emily was getting past the fear of quitting university – which they’ve now done. The next stage is raising the funds, probably through crowdfunding campaigns."

Unfortunately...

"Emily readily admits that she’s not a money person – “I’m no expert on finance,” she says"

EastWestWhosBest · 21/08/2021 21:43

So the story here is ‘student drops out if uni saying that they are going to start a business’. How is that news? I said all sorts of shit at that age.

QueenPeary · 21/08/2021 21:37

I wonder if there are possibly lesbian venues in Edinburgh that Pink News doesn't know about.

Griefmonster · 21/08/2021 21:17

@Mrsjamin

£10 says it never happens. I still have absolutely no idea how you can be lesbian / gay and nonbinary. I just don't get the mental gymnastics that says that you're into people the same sex as you when you say you have no gender. If you have no gender how are other people the same sex? If you are nonbinary, how can you define your sexuality if you're not pansexual? HmmConfused
Agree. There is zero chance this person will open a bar of any kind under their own steam.
AtlasNeverShrugged · 21/08/2021 21:06

Let's face it, Pink News would never celebrate a genuine lesbian bar. There's only one type of "lesbian" they like...

Mrsjamin · 21/08/2021 19:56

@Jinkiesfred Sorry I see your follow up. Indeed.

Griefmonster · 21/08/2021 19:26

@Jinkiesfred How does this bar in Soho define a lesbian? Or indeed a woman?

Jinkiesfred · 21/08/2021 19:23

"The history of gender, particularly within the lesbian community, is so complex."

...its actually really bloody not that complex, the history of lesbians IS EXCLUSIVELY WOMEN. THATS THE POINT

Jinkiesfred · 21/08/2021 19:21

There's a bar in soho that doesn't allow men in full stop unless they have a female handler/ escort so along the lines of no cis men etc ...it works quite well as a female only space

CovidCorvid · 21/08/2021 19:14

Funny you should say that........

Quite! Grin

And yes, I’d have thought that not allowing entrance on the basis of sexuality would fall foul of equality laws?
