I thought this article might be worth a read. I’m intrigued how cultural appropriation and institutional racism got caught up with veganism and transphobia.

Yes, pretty much what korawick12345 said. To be fair it's definitely not always the case that they're connected everywhere, but there are plenty of people who are just jumping on whatever bandwagon is going with whom it's impossible to have any open conversation. Though there are also leaders in the charity sector who haven't thought enough about this before and are now either out of their depth and highly repentant and grovelling (I've seen mainly women in this category) or completely ignoring it (more men) so it's a mess from both ends.

@WhereYouLeftIt

"The "queer" thing has been linked in with racism in lots of cases, which isn't helping if you want to challenge racism but can't buy into queer and gender identity."

Can you explain this a bit further @TabbyStar? how are they connected?

They aren’t connected, that’s the whole point. The problem is when someone basicallly sets themselves up as a professional victim it means that when they are a victim of an actual injustice it’s hard to believe them. Given that this clearly female person considers it an affront if anyone would dare to refer to her as she, I can’t really trust her judgement on any other type of discrimination.

Especially PETA!Hmm

@FluffyBattleKitten

Agh posted too soon. I wouldn't take any vegan organisation as representative of vegans. They tend to attract an extreme element. We're mostly normal people who eat grains and tofu.
Thank you, @FluffyBattleKitten, that is reassuring!
aliensprig · 01/08/2021 19:51

Christ on a bike. No wonder people think vegans are all pathetic snowflakes! Cultural appropriation?! Where is the cultural appropriation in reducing your meat intake for your health, for the planet and for animal suffering? Are we supposed to just live off plain beans, rice and veg? Mad, completely mad. It is actually possible (far fetched though it may seem) to be vegan and not a delusional idiot. Grin

TabbyStar · 01/08/2021 19:47

The articles seem very different. One painting a picture of genuine racism in which case this thread isnt very nice.

It does seem likely that there is genuine racism and probably other issues as well, as there are in all charities, I've seen some charities working constructively together to address racism and similar, and others descend into accusations and counter-accusations and people being too scared to speak from all angles. Most people are somewhere in the middle and able to have constructive conversations, but others have extremes on both ends and just become paralysed and acrimonious. The "queer" thing has been linked in with racism in lots of cases, which isn't helping if you want to challenge racism but can't buy into queer and gender identity. It needs people with enough life experience and emotional maturity to steer a path through, but it might be a while before this happens.

Alfonso, I would tak

AlfonsoTheMango · 01/08/2021 19:36

All I learnt from the "exclusive" article in The Vegan Review and the resignation letter was that the former vice chair is disabled, queer, black and from a working class background.

Did you know that the former vice chair is disabled, queer, black and from a working class background?

In case I didn't make it clear before, the former vice chair is disabled, queer, black and from a working class background.

I am all for animal welfare, which is why I rarely eat meat but there is no way I could become a vegan if it meant being represented by The Vegan Society, even if the former vice chair is disabled, queer, black and from a working class background.

I got about a quarter of the way through that letter. It’s a masterpiece of self-victimising woke bullshit. I’m sure the Vegan Society is devastated to have seen the back of that individual.

The British Left really is completely & permanently fucked if that 🤡 is representative of its young activists.

WildishBambino · 01/08/2021 19:17

Here's the actual resignation letter. This person has gone full Titania McGrath.

TabbyStar · 01/08/2021 18:24

Is it just me who got stuck at a giant cleavage shot in that second article?

Nearly, though I wish I had because I feel none the wiser having read all of it!

korawick12345 · 01/08/2021 18:16

From the article
'Zuri's resignation letter states they had been 'naive' joining the council in 2019 as a 'multiply marginalised trustee, being black, queer, disabled and working class'

She really is trying to win protected characteristics top trumps isn't she.

Imnobody4 · 01/08/2021 18:12

MattDamon · 01/08/2021 18:06

Zuri said they resigned before their motion for the charity to join the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign in support of Palestine was put to vote, but they believe it will fail as they are already “being labelled as anti-semitic”.

Pushing special interests like above, it's no wonder there was friction. I have special interests too, but I wouldn't push them on a group meant to represent all vegans.

BraveBananaBadge · 01/08/2021 18:05

So they have fluffy it has been pointed out in reports eg:

ScreamingMeMe · 01/08/2021 17:50

@FluffyBattleKitten

I can't make head nor tail of that article. I do find it disappointing as a vegan though, as v society usually take a moderate view. I don't like being lumped in with gender ideology though. Me and husband are both vegan and GC. We just are vegan for ethical reasons and it's right and possible for us to live vegan lives.
I couldn't really understand either of them, but this seems quite usual with this sort of thing.

I did pick out that someone used the n-word, which is totally out of order. And their hiring processes were probably discriminatory? But they have taken steps to address this but they're not satisfactory?

I dunno, I think I'm coming down with a headache so that might be affecting my reading comprehension.

Absolutely hilarious. The website of the ex chair is a masterpiece of word salad. The ex chair seems to think they are an 25 year old expert in pretty much everything you can think of despite not really having any real skills, qualifications or experience.

The level of self indulgence is unbelievable

FluffyBattleKitten · 01/08/2021 17:33

@BraveBananaBadge

That is interesting - I read a thing this week about how ethical veganism is now a protected belief, with regards to people refusing the covid vaccine. Just made me think it's probably easier to be taken seriously for that than to stand up for women.

(Not being flippant, I've a close relative falls into that camp and it's made things difficult for years)

The vegan society endorsed the vaccine though. An example of their usual moderate stance.
