I'm a 5 year old boy.

Feeling depressed. What the hell is the point of education?
We have a 15 year old house guest from Germany. Goes to a grammar school and is bright and interested in things.
I gave her the Youtube video to watch which shows a man asking American university students about whether they believe him if he (a medium height 40 year white old man) tells them that he's a completely different type of person. She watched it and then told me she would have believed the man. I asked her if she would believe me if I, a middle-aged woman, told her I was a 5 year old boy. She said she would. If I say I am a 5 year old boy, then I am.
Does the human species deserve to survive?

@Xoxoxoxoxoxox

You're making her into some sort of weird German ambassador. Let he enjoy her holiday.

Two females having a discussion why do you assume she didn't want to?

Probably because her response is a pretty classic teenager way to try and get out of a conversation.
BlueberryCheezecake · 28/07/2021 15:42

@Chickenyhead

Pro-women, not anti-trans.

But you already know that.

I wonder how many years it will take for this generation to be grounded in reality.

I can't think of a single thing that's pro-woman about the video or the exchange you've described. How does it help women to make stupid false equivalencies like "lol if you believe trans people exist you must believe I'm a 5 year old or that cats are dogs". That's clearly an attempt at an anti-trans gotcha, it's got nothing whatsoever to do with women's rights, and honestly it's such a stupid argument it deserves the stupid response your house guest gave you. She probably thinks you're nuts.

She is enjoying her holiday. Which is in large part about cultural exchange / new experiences.

In my (fairly considerable) experience, bright, well-educated teenage girls tend to enjoy discussing things that are relevant to their lives. Weird, that.

@567fedup

On the plus side, she tells me (and why wouldn't I believe her on this) that relations between boys and girls are very good at her school, and she has never come across any kind of sexual harassment at the school, or any indication that the boys are watching porn. Again - what are they doing that we're not?
Well, one thing they're clearly not doing is forcing anti-trans rhetoric down their children's throat so maybe you should take a leaf out of their book.

@EishetChayil

Bit of a weird thing to do, to be fair...
It's not weird if they were already talking about gender ideology is it?

After all, if you vehemently believe that men can actually be women, then presumably you believe that white people can actually be black, or that adult females can actually be 5 year old boys? And what's wrong with asking someone to back that up?

Xoxoxoxoxoxox · 28/07/2021 15:05

The poor girl is on holiday and your firing all these bizarre questions at her.

Sounds like you've worried some posters OP by having an open debate with her, I wonder why?.....

567fedup · 28/07/2021 15:00

Nope. She's very self confident and was expressing her views.
I'm not sure how the Germans do it, but all the German children I come across are extremely self-assured.

It doesn't really sound like you've just been having a conversation with her though, it sounds like you've been badgering her relentlessly because she dared have a different opinion than you, and now you've cornered her into a position where she can only hope that if she doesn't budge, you'll finally give up and leave her alone.

dyslek · 28/07/2021 14:53

I agree schools should be speaking up for reality and the importance of critical thinking and safeguarding, that they are not is surely a scandal.

567fedup · 28/07/2021 14:48

Is it so unusual for teenagers to have conversations with adults?
This is what teachers should be doing, in my view. The school system should not be looking on (at best) while our young people are brainwashed. I hope that I may at least have sown a germ of doubt in her mind, even if she's not prepared to admit it.

I feel for them. They have been indoctrinated in purity spirals and told that critical thinking keeping quiet or debating is not good enough.

dyslek · 28/07/2021 14:42

I would agree that common sense says that its too batshit to survive long, but horrifyingly crazy shit has taken over society before.
You would probably have to go back to the middle ages for ideas as toxic as these about women, but absolutly bartking shit has been accepted, sometimes for hundreds of years.
Espicially woman and imigrants are vulernable because they are always an outgroup in society anyway.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/07/2021 14:38

Does the human species deserve to survive?

The odd thing is, that despite some youngsters blithely claiming to think sex has no importance or even reality vs 'gender', somehow it miraculously will survive.

TonkinLenkicks · 28/07/2021 14:36

Sounds like a barrel of fun at your house Hmm

Jackgrealishscurtains · 28/07/2021 14:35

Its amazing that anyone can push the nothing to see here line in the face of at least one generation being indoctranated to publically deny the informaiton of their own eyes, ears and brain. Denying basic reality to fit in with an idology is very new in our society.

Well this is the very crux of the issue with trans ideology in general. If you follow it to all of its logical conclusions then you end up in some crazy places, like believing that grown women can be 5 year old boys if they so identify.

It is largely for this reason, as well as the glaring clashes with women's rights, that the whole thing is destined to collapse, and soon. Its just too batshit.

BlueberryCheezecake · 28/07/2021 14:33

She probably just wants to disengage from the topic, either because she's not actually that interested, or she recognises you're going to keep on and on about it otherwise, so she's just being ridiculous to try and bring things to a close. As a good host, you should probably take the hint and stop trying to browbeat your young guest with youtube gotchas.

dyslek · 28/07/2021 14:29

Technically you could draw paralells with neoconservative economic and pro-war idololgy, but even with that propaganda you did not need to deny such basic reality right in front of you to go along with it.
I struggle to undersand anyone who isent horrified and facinated in equal measure.

567fedup · 28/07/2021 14:26

The German grammar school system may not teach children to distinguish men from women, but it does a really good job of teaching them English.

The topic came up in conversation, and I naively thought that the video would make her think about things a bit.
Our cat loves going for walks with people, so I have now decided that she is in fact a dog and should be treated accordingly.
