Are there many?
When I'm over this hacking covid cough I'd love to meet up for coffee.

Me! County Durham, the North Yorkshire end. I don't post a huge amount here but this was where my GC awakening properly began.

MsMarvellous · 29/07/2021 20:01

Grin so so painful 🤣. I've moved now! You'll have to come down here though, it's a much nicer view!

ShangaLangCleg · 29/07/2021 19:26

Mrs M, I'm the one who came to your house with the thumbscrews etc. You still have the scars, no doubt. Grin

MsMarvellous · 29/07/2021 18:58

@ShangaLangCleg Brewhave a solidarity cuppa

MsMarvellous · 29/07/2021 18:57

Too many of you @ShangaLangCleg and I'm rubbish at keeping track, even with real names 🤣

StealthPolarBear · 29/07/2021 17:29

Hello everyone! I both forgot about and lost this thread. Will read through properly but nice to know there are other GC women locally.

CrlyWrly
Hi, nice to see you here. I've realised who a few posters are and they are in our local groups anyway.

CrlyWrly · 28/07/2021 16:29

NC to say "Hi everyone!" from North of The Tyne Smile

Thank you for the advice TheShadowyFeminist

MsMarvellous I would be happy to use Slack or another platform to chat (you and I have chatted recently elsewhere Smile).

There are existing "Private Places" covering this part of the world on other platforms, on at least one of which it is easy to be anonymous if you want to be.

There are benefits to duplication and overlap of membership across different platforms, in that if one haven gets infiltrated or nuked we don't all lose contact with one another.

MsMarvellous · 28/07/2021 08:45

Are those interested in meeting happy to use an app outside of MN to chat? I was thinking something like Slack gives people the chance to keep anonymity? Would need a group setting up and someone to vet people before inviting via dm?

MsMarvellous · 28/07/2021 08:43

I love me a group of the like minded!

WarriorN · 28/07/2021 07:19

Can vouch for the NE groups, I'm in both if anyone wants to pm.

ShangaLangCleg · 27/07/2021 17:37

I'm in the area too. There are other groups of north east women set up already and one of the admins has started to make contact via some DMs here but no replies yet altho some have DMs turned off. Can peeps check their message inboxes over the next days if poss?

ThreeB · 27/07/2021 13:57

Waves at the Northern cohort!

Teesside/N York's/County Durham border here.

TheShadowyFeminist · 27/07/2021 13:15

Spy nicknames are the best part! 😁

MsMarvellous · 27/07/2021 12:44

Agreed @TheShadowyFeminist there needs to be trust and common sense. And possibly code names, for that spy film feel?

TheShadowyFeminist · 27/07/2021 10:50

It takes a leap of faith & huge amount of trust to get the vetting side of connecting with others right - or as safe as it's possible to be.

FWIW from my experience, you need to be certain the person who you are allowing into your group is real, who they say they are, and are happy to disclose their online ID/accounts for checking. I'd also recommend meeting in person in a public place to be able to have a conversation in person as it's far easier to maintain a false front online than it is in person.

These are all steps I've taken when agreeing to include someone in private spaces/groups with other women & even with those steps you can never guarantee the person/people you are dealing with won't turn out to be a problem.

Never give away personal info that can be used to cause you trouble. Don't mention your place of work, your home town, your kids, any schools or other identifying information to anyone unless you can be sure they're trustworthy. Even then I'd urge caution. And I'd ask others to think about the sort of Qs you are asking in a group like this that you want to be part of - asking others for identifying personal info is unnecessary & actually places suspicion on you. In most other settings, it's probably a natural way to try & get to know people - but in the context of these groups, it's really not appropriate.

Just my tuppance-worth. Feel free to ignore.Smile

Starbar66 · 27/07/2021 09:25

Agree Marvellous. When I queried safety, I didn't mean being in public as a group; I meant that being anonymous means we don't know everyone reading this and joining in has the best intentions. Being 'outed' beyond this kind of (lovely-sounding) group is a problem for me because of work (Durham is a small place I tell you), but I appreciate I may be being hyper-anxious...

Nimora · 27/07/2021 07:54

I'm a bit further up in Northumberland, but can travel. It would be awesome to meet like-minded women.

ixqik · 27/07/2021 07:50

I'm from Co Durham too. What about a zoom chat for starters?

MsMarvellous · 27/07/2021 07:20

How to do this and be safe is interesting. One group I am in vets people carefully before you're allowed over the threshold. Harder for us all being anon.

We could do with a secret group somewhere to chat. There aren't many of us, which is a good thing.
