I'm not a huge user of Twitter but I do follow Phillip Pullman who seems to have stepped out on this issue now. I'm gutted!

I hope Kit is a bit like he's portrayed on Upstart Crow.
Or like Blackadder's Lord Flasheart. Woof!

I've only read one of his books, 'The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ'. I can honestly remember very little about it, except that I read it quickly as it was quite short and the prose style very plain. I find a lot of professional atheists like him to be tiresome and pompous, they seem to just enjoy trying to demonstrate their superior intellects - often imagined - by pre-empting what they assume to be others' ignorance on any given topic and trying to set you straight before you've even hinted at your opinion (I had in-laws like this who assumed because I had done a humanities degree I must be an irrational creature who believed in auras, fairy dust and the like). That said, at least Dawkins has now hinted at gender critical leanings, although it's about time. Funny how so many atheists swell with pride at how very reasonable they are and how brave to take on religiosity, except on the concept of female and male souls, or 'female brains' accidentally put (by who - god? The brain fairy?) into male bodies.

Also should mention that all my kids gave up on his books saying they found them humourless and boring. Even though I read them all it was a chore, and felt like a tediously long children's book written by an adult who does not like children.

Slythermum · 22/07/2021 19:32

I think he and Neil Gaiman both have been secretly enjoying watching JK burn otherwise why not keep their wokey blokey mouths shut? However "Non-magic people (more commonly known as Muggles) were particularly afraid of magic in medieval times, but not very good at recognising it. On the rare occasion that they did catch a real witch or wizard, burning had no effect whatsoever. The witch or wizard would perform a basic Flame Freezing Charm and then pretend to shriek with pain while enjoying a gentle, tickling sensation. Indeed, Wendelin the Weird enjoyed being burned so much that she allowed herself to be caught no less than forty-seven times in various disguises."

I honestly believe that Pullman is taking the absolute piss out of women. He knows his books can be interpreted as pro-GC so he can 100% see the issues. He takes a lot of pleasure in hurting his female readers who probably placed a lot of faith in him...that he would understand. He is one of those men who like to kick vulnerable people when they're down, I think.

He is utterly revolting and I hope women now stop trying to see humanity within this man. Many, many men have sacrificed their humanity JUST to dominate women. We rise above them.

OldCrone · 22/07/2021 19:19

Some TRAs genuinely think gender critical means upholding gender stereotypes.

They either believe this or it suits their purposes to try to convince others that this is what 'gender critical' means.

SirVixofVixHall · 22/07/2021 19:10

@ValancyRedfern

justspeculation that book sounds fascinating.

His Dark Materials is literally about how evil it is to freeze kids pre-puberty. What an absolute tool.

Yes, i find it totally bizarre that he wrote that trilogy and yet seems to not want to see the parallels.
LastSummerHere · 22/07/2021 19:08

@NotTerfNorCis

Noticed a lot of TRAs giving misleading or downright dishonest answers to his 'GC' question.

🥴 Stay away from the trans cult, kids. It makes you stupid.

Breathe, yes. The man is a gutless wonder. Throws a hand grenade and sits back while everyone takes his bait. I actually despise him.

BreatheAndFocus · 22/07/2021 18:45

@AmericanSlang

God, he's tweeting "GC? What does that mean?" now, after yesterday lecturing everyone about how well informed he is. Honestly I really think he's just being a goady fucker at this point.
Yes, he thinks he’s being clever. He’s put that out there knowing TRAs will come along and provide their usual fake descriptions - KM’s being a particularly daft one as often is. So he’s sitting back smirking as others label GC people “anti-trans” or, like Katie, simply say it means the exact opposite of what it does. All this adds adds to the swirl of confusion and adds the attempt to sideline anyone who dares to say women’s rights matter.
KittenKong · 22/07/2021 18:29

He wouldn’t. I couldn’t have seen that happen.

HelenJoyce · 22/07/2021 18:28

Never thought I’d say it, but when I read tweets like this it makes me thankful TP died when he did. I couldn’t bear it if he did similar.

LastSummerHere · 22/07/2021 18:25

@PieceOfString that is exactly it. It's disgusting how GC people, both men and women, are demonised for being the only people fighting for liberation from oppressive stereotypes.

I like this answer... Gender extremists say we must change our sexed bodies to match our personalities

Religious Right says our sexed body dictates the personality we're allowed to have

GC feminism says we shouldn't change our sexed bodies to match our personalities;any body can have any personality

@LittlePearl

Fortunately I have always thought he was vile, so no disappointment here.

A pompous man acting according to type.

It's all hijinks to him and to every privileged man. They are so rich and privileged that life is boring - shitting on women gives them a fun distraction.

@TheSlayer

Well, he's off my imaginary authors dinner party. JK, Edith Nesbitt, Bram Stoker, Kit Marlowe, Mary Shelly, HC Anderson(if he promises not to be weird)

Obviously they're all on one table and I've been assigned to the kiddy table, as not equal to towering intellects.

I hope Kit is a bit like he's portrayed on Upstart Crow.
Freespeecher · 22/07/2021 16:58

Tanith
Thanks - I initially had the impression it was an aggressive type going around demanding why certain celebs hadn't signed up which obviously isn't the case regarding Pullman weaseling out of a prior commitment.

cocoapopfan · 22/07/2021 14:47

Wow. That's quite a tweet.

I mean, always good to admit to ignorance, but maybe not after you've just claimed a deep knowledge of the arguments ...

Tanith · 22/07/2021 14:46

"is the issue less that he didn't sign and more that he took off on the petitioner?"

As I recall, the petition went out and he tweeted that he would have signed, had he been asked. That prompted replies that it wasn't too late, he could still sign. He then backed off, saying he couldn't possibly sign something he hadn't read and didn't know about.

Signing, or not, isn't a problem.
Claiming you would have signed, if only you'd been asked, then backtracking and attacking the people who offer you that option is disingenuous.

TheSlayer · 22/07/2021 14:31

And God does his dark material's work well as a gender ideology analogy.
Operating on children to keep them in arrested development.
Having one rule for your children and another for hypothetical (how many parents would honestly cheerlead unnecessary surgery for their own child)

Phillip's Daemon is definitely a dog(in the books these are people who follow orders and ideology without question)

He either knows literally nothing about this debate, in which case he should start listening & stop claiming to be Mr Expert, or he's just shit stirring & laughing at us all, in which case he should just fuck right off

I am sure of it. His faux ignorance wore thin months ago and I see that's still his tedious shtick.
