JKR takes on the victim blamers over the pornography tweeted at children

I'm glad she's said this. It's despicable that TRA's subjected children to this in the first instance but even more so that they double down to blame the woman they targeted.

So on the one hand he's saying this:

"Perplexed by that tweet. You said the Ickabog was for seven to nine year olds. The lower age limit for twitter is 13."

So he knows that children aged 13 are allowed onto the site and many will be following JKR.

But when it's pointed out that for younger children, their parents will be tweeting their artwork he says this:

"But it raises the question why Jo is talking about needing to protect children"

I'm sure he already knows this but Jo is talking about needing to protect children because:

  1. 13 year olds ARE children.
  1. Younger children still might have some access to the site, regardless of whether or not they should and responsible adults know this.
  1. By reporting the perverts responsible but refusing to otherwise engage with them, she's protecting everyone else from having to see the images (including the people in the images should they need to be protected) in the best way possible, regardless of how old they may be because it's not just children who don't want to see it (and that's exactly while the vile fuckers posting it are doing it, because they know that and do does he).

I don't use social media = It doesn't count when I do it.

TinselAngel · 18/07/2021 23:21

I don't use social media

Is MN not social media?

ScreamingMeMe · 18/07/2021 23:19

@Ereshkigalangcleg

"I don't use social media so miss all the drama but know the minutiae of JK Rowling's tweets last year"
Yes, I was struck by the faux naivety too.
Congressdingo · 18/07/2021 22:20

I’m glad I don’t use Twitter. It sounds grim. Why would you run a promotion aimed at kids on a site that has porn on it. The whole thing is disgusting

Can you be more specific? What's disgusting? Twitter? The porn on there? Kids promotion? Those posting the porn?

I mean if it was only fans then you would have a point, but Twitter is a cesspit if that's all you look at, like Facebook they use an algorithm that send you more of what you look at. So you see porn, because that's what you look for. Who's fault is that? JKR doesn't make you.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/07/2021 22:14

I’m confused. I though she did say that last year when she was arguing on Twitter? Or was it a fake tweet? I don’t use social media so I miss all this drama.

Surprisingly well informed about what happens on Twitter for someone who doesn't use social media, aren't you? I know various people who wouldn't have a clue what this was about.

Mollyollydolly · 18/07/2021 21:37

She should have her devices taken off her so she doesn't keep posting on Twitter.
That's what your mum says to you isn't it?

I think a lot of these people are children, or at least very young. In kids, I think it's forgivable, they just don't understand the full extent of what's going on and want to fit in with whatever's fashionable. Their brains haven't fully developed until their mid-twenties (no offence to all the wonderful young people who aren't like this, but it's a fact). The older ones have only misogyny and narcissism to blame.
I agree, for some of them it's just a game to get attention. they say outlandish things and then just wait for the responses. Or add to a pile-on and feel big and clever.

Imagine your whole claim to fame being 'I harassed JKRowling'?
I'm actually embarrassed for them.

I often wonder if these people will look back in shame at some of their online antics in years to come. I certainly cringe at some of the stupid sh!t I did as a teenager, but theirs in online forever in all it's glory.

littlbrowndog · 18/07/2021 21:08

It’s the people that pos5 porn that you should be disgusted at

Why would you choose to characterise what she did as 'running a promotion on a site that has porn on it', as though Twitter itself was solely a porn site? What, like Facebook, then? Or any other social media place. And the only reason there was porn connected with her promotion was the actions of disgusting people. Blame them, not her.

What social media platform has ‘no porn’ ? Genuinely, can you tell us what Joanne Rowling SHOULD have used to try to provide some entertainment for locked down kids?

And do you think that those posting porn and horrific threats were righteous in their tactics then? Do you support the attacks on Joanne Rowling or indeed any person disagreeing with the current rhetoric?

I really don’t want to be rude (but I’m sooooooooooooo tempted)

I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt…..do you honestly stand by what you just wrote or are you on a wind up?

@Novelusername

I feel bad such an intelligent, sensitive, caring and thoughtful woman has to deal with such infuriating idiots, idiots who will doubtless never do for others a fraction of what she has. There's something gone very wrong somewhere when this is happening. What a bunch of narcissistic, ungrateful muppets.
Me too. Having to deal with the sheer volume of knobheads, must be mind crushingly tedious and depressing.

The Internet has a lot to answer for. Bringing all these inadequate twats together to encourage each other in their unoriginal misogyny.

WarOnWoman · 18/07/2021 19:10

@Maerchentante

A lot of the TRAs on Twitter remind me of little children saying "Mummy, such and such called me xxx" but never get the "and what did you do?" response.

That is why I loved JKR's tweet: "I'll give you a moment to think hard about..." Exactly how one talks to a child. Bloody brilliant.

To be fair to you it's probably the only sort of punishment you've been on the receiving end of. Your poor mum....

Absolutely Pathetic 🤣

ScreamingMeMe · 18/07/2021 18:50

Way to infantilise a grown woman btw, RaindropsOnRosie. That's some stellar feminism!

Taken off her by who? The Thought Police?
Ifyourefeelingsinister · 18/07/2021 18:10

I hope she is considering suing them - rather a defamatory tweet

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 18/07/2021 18:04

Because that's not the majority. If you rule out that, better avoid Facebook or Instagram as things fall through there that you wouldn't want children to see.

And TikTok.

Better give Pride and public libraries a swerve too!

True. And bookshops. (Weren't people complaining about a JKR or similar author's book being promoted at Waterstones a while ago?)

FloralBunting · 18/07/2021 18:03

I first saw a porn mag flapping about discarded on a pathway.
My own fault for walking outside the house, I'm sure.
