I'm glad she's said this. It's despicable that TRA's subjected children to this in the first instance but even more so that they double down to blame the woman they targeted.

Andrew Doyle: The attacks on JK Rowling are unhinged and based on a complete misrepresentation of her views. [Tweet has an embedded interview with GBNews]

@ScreamingMeMe

I mean you could turn that on its head and say that Spurling is responsible for rhe threats to JK, couldn't you? If you wanted to go down that "logic" route.
Having a look at the screenshot Spurling posted, I'm very sceptical that it's even genuine. It reads just like every single threat JK has received from angry little incels that hate women has received. I would be absolutely SHOCKED to find out a TRA had created that account with the intention of posting that to make GC women look "violent".

I don't doubt there is genuine transphobia in the world, but this ain't it. I'd love to see further evidence of all the so called violence and death threats made by feminists, too bad the receipts are never forthcoming.

@ScreamingMeMe

Also I should point out that Spurling isn't just some twitter random: they are a member of the Green Party in British Columbia.
How surprising! Green Party! Canada! It's almost as though there was a pattern.

FloralBunting · 20/07/2021 13:08

Yes "Waah, the woman I libelled is successful enough to call me to account" isn't quite the devastating victim stance Spurling thinks it is.

AlfonsoTheMango · 20/07/2021 13:04

I guess Spurling found out who has the bigger hammer.

And, Spurling, stop with the childish "You started it" nonsense and the whining about wealth. Rowling's wealth is entirely self-made and she has used it to support women and children.

FannyCann · 20/07/2021 12:22

I wouldn't have accepted that non apology, I wonder what Spurling's lawyer's advice was with respect to that.

I think JK isn't that keen to waste time and effort on legal cases, especially with nonentities, though there are probably quite a few warning letters sent that we never hear about because most people with any sense recognise when they are outgunned and quickly back down. I suspect she's waiting for a bigger fish to catch but then again, she's a very magnanimous woman and probably just doesn't want to go down that route unless she really is driven to it.

ScreamingMeMe · 20/07/2021 12:02

Here's the interaction between Spurling and Rowling, including a nonapology from Spurling ("she's using her wealth to silence meeeee"), for context.

@ScreamingMeMe

JK Rowling is responsible for a trans person getting threats, apparently (they haven't clarified how).
That is appalling. First, J K Rowling has received thousands - not hundreds - of threats. Second, Rowling is not responsible for any threats - and I doubt they number in the thousands as barely anyone knows who Spurling is - Spurling has received.

Spurling's tweet is menacing - "a bigger hammer" and "who started it". But Twitter will ignore it, of course.

Yes. Thank you. That is the one. I hadn't seen the thread on MN but read about it elsewhere.

ScreamingMeMe · 20/07/2021 11:44

But to accuse someone who has never interacted with you or probably even knows of your existence to have 'caused' them is a very wild accusation.

They have interacted. Spurling wrote an article about her and tweeted that she was a danger to children, and JK replied to that. That still doesn't mean she has responsibility for the threats to Spurling, of course.

ScreamingMeMe · 20/07/2021 11:40

@thirdfiddle

Excuse cynicism, it's not without basis in experience.
Oh I know.

So, again the misogynistic view that females are responsible for male violence.

That Spurling has received threats is, of course, reprehensible. But to accuse someone who has never interacted with you or probably even knows of your existence to have 'caused' them is a very wild accusation. But it is very much the current tactic and it has been clear to me exactly what sex the people deploying that tactic are.

thirdfiddle · 20/07/2021 11:33

Ok fair enough, that is horrible and I hope she's reported it.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 20/07/2021 11:32

It's always distressing to receive such messages.

I don't think I know anyone (except the sort of person who thinks it's OK to send death messages, threats, and abuse to (say) JKR or pretty much any human) who would not decry the content of those screenshots.

ScreamingMeMe · 20/07/2021 11:29

@thirdfiddle

If you live in a world where misgendering is "literal violence", who knows what constitutes a threat. Mild disagreement? Kittens?
They've told her to kill herself (you can sew the posts in the screenshot), so it is actually awful.

FloralBunting · 20/07/2021 11:24

Obviously a threat is wrong. That needs no clarification or qualification at all.

So why the 'You started it' schtick? (Which is nonsensical because iirc, Spurling said that JKR was a danger to children after her essay).

If threats are wrong, they're wrong, aren't they? People are wrong to send Spurling threats and they're wrong to send Rowling threats. It's very hard to miss that Rowling is getting told by a number of high profile professional kind people that the threats she receives are entirely her own fault for speaking. Including, it seems, Spurling of the Eager Defamation.

Mermaids twitter being run by Violet Bott I see. "Dispicable"?
Dispicable, indeed. As well as ridiculous.

She is receiving threats from threatening people, some of whom are transactivists, some aren't, some are trans, some aren't.

Did Mermaids actually respond to J. K. Rowling posting a bomb threat and saying she had been threatened hundreds of times, saying they were sad to see her casting these people as a threat?

🤣

Kinell. It's just beyond parody.

I've received all these threats! It's so sad to see you framing these threats as threatening.
