I am not informed enough in this space to make serious comment on whether there are legal grounds etc so I’ll just share the tweet with archive article link, to show what’s going on here. twitter.com/satirianews/status/1416286186994376708?s=21

The total fucking irony of this is that Tasmania is a redneck homophobic state, in a pretty redneck homophobic country (I lived there for 30 years, I know the place). Or rather, lesbophobic. Gay men are acceptable now in Australia if they're funny & camp & cute.

But the arguments and the misogyny and lesbophobia rampant in the Sydney Mardi Gras organisation when I lived in Sydney in the 1980s was unbelievable.

And in Tasmania, lesbophobia also rampant (just listen to Hannah Gadsby), together with homophobia. So this move to "inclusion" is just grandstanding.

But basically, Australia is a misogynist's paradise. Think about why some of the most kick ass feminist come from there - Germaine Greer, Carmen Calil ...

*Agreed, I think for any rational person it's bizarre to try and get our heads round this.
Unfortunately, many of these people aren't like that. Many of them actively enjoy making women uncomfortable by knowingly invading their space and gloating about it.

Actually, I think your reasonable attitude is one the sticking points for why so many people don't see or want to see the extremes that some are going to in all this.
So many think that is must be a mistake/ an overreaction etc. because they could never imagine being so ridiculous to demand that others comply with their delusion.
So they refuse to believe there's a problem, it must be women being hysterical about nothing.*

Totally agree Mulletsaremisunderstood
Reasonable people don't understand or believe that other people do not have the same standards of politeness and reasonableness. They just don't believe there is a problem.

@Gottalife

"Bid to exclude ‘people with penises’ "

They are going to demand to see what attendees have between their legs? Should be interesting.

And heaven forbid anyone should just expect males to have the courtesy to stay away from something they’re not invited to…

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's a duck.

@ClumpingBambooIsALie

I don't understand the mentality of people who would want to go to something like that when they weren't in the intended group. I'd feel uncomfortable and bad about muscling my way into something for a minority group I didn't belong to :-/ I get intellectually that they want validation, and think they're punching up for some topsy-turvy reason, but intuitively I can't think myself into that headspace. Bizarre
That is exactly what men have done throughout history. Entitlement over women in every way.

UK the law allows for orgs etc to have a blanket exemption.

Unfortunately loads of orgs were advised otherwise by... Various groups etc.

FannyCann · 18/07/2021 10:06

I don't know about Australia but in the U.K. as I understand it the single sex exemption is allowable on a case by case system?(Happy to be corrected). This hardly fills one with confidence for how such a system could work.

Naunet · 18/07/2021 09:11

So the Freemasons are allowed to exclude women, but lesbians aren’t allowed to exclude men?

CardinalLolzy · 18/07/2021 08:52

What's interesting is the law she quotes on order to ban this which I would say is reaching quite a lot - they might have to establish someone's sex in a way that would lead to insult, humiliation etc.

--.
In her decision, Ms Bolt said the application sought to go further than exemptions granted in other states by “requiring people to provide intimate information about their body to gain access to the proposed events”.
“This is problematic as it may result in potential breaches of the act under section 17, which makes offensive, humiliating, intimidating, insulting and ridiculing conduct on the basis of gender, gender identity and intersex variations of sex characteristics unlawful,” Ms Bolt ruled.
“I consider the risk of unlawful conduct under such an exemption … to be significant. As I see it, an exemption should not be granted in circumstances where the conduct permitted could foreseeably be in contradiction with the principles of the act.”

NotYourCisterinAus · 18/07/2021 07:43

There's an article on it 8n the Launceston Examiner (behind a pay wall so I'm going on the headline).

I'm not surprised that the story is only appearing in The Australian. Trans stories tend to disappear behind a woke wall of silence in the Australian media. The ABC (our national broadcaster) only has stunning-and-brave fluff pieces about Janet who used to be John and who can now play women's rugby, or "men" who give birth. I'm reduced to being a cranky old woman yelling at the TV screen. (And more seriously, it has lead me to question EVERYTHING from sources I used to trust.)

NiceGerbil · 18/07/2021 03:20

I can only find it on LGB alliance Twitter and the piece linked.

I'm surprised it's not got more hits seeing as it's a govt thing.

Taking it as face value I'm dismayed.

In the past this has been done by targeting venues to get them not to host, and getting loads of people to bombard them.

A decision like this from a govt person is different.

Megasausagehead · 18/07/2021 03:17

I must say, I don't get it.

I don't understand to any extent how this is considered in any way just or fair. It is so ridiculous that it is an insult to anyone with a modicum of intelligence.

Thinking that actual lesbians want to include people with penises. It's like once they added gender reassignment to equalities considerations, everyone else's rights were deleted.

NotYourCisterinAus · 18/07/2021 03:11

Back into the closet for lesbians in Tasmania. How progressive. Sad

SoftDay · 18/07/2021 00:58

I believe David Bennett actually popped in here to say hello when there was a thread about that at the time, Fanny. Nice bloke, as I recall!

His response to the demand for obeisance to the genderist dogma is a master class in how it should be done.

And another screenshot from the item.

FannyCann · 17/07/2021 23:25

Just for comparison sake let's remind ourselves what happened when a gay group decided to exclude females (albeit identifying as men).

timeisnotaline · 17/07/2021 23:13

@theinebriati I thought about explaining that re the account but the article is indeed in one of our main, more right wing, newspapers.

Satiria News is a satirical account; but the report is genuine.

littlbrowndog · 17/07/2021 12:58

It’s lesbians being erased.

Wonder if this is happening to gay men

YetAnotherSpartacus · 17/07/2021 12:42

Appalling. This puts womyn in actual danger.

FloralBunting · 17/07/2021 12:34

Jesus. Clown world is right. If it's baffling to you that a lesbian event would exclude males, let me make it crystal clear, once more - If you have or have ever had a cock, you are not and will never be a lesbian.
