This from FPFW site.

This MSc student is looking at public attitudes to transgender prisoners. It takes about 10 minutes to complete and could be an important measure of public opinion. Please take a moment to fill in.
t.co/LXpRTvw8Ji?amp=1study and please share.

I think this is bona fide. It's on FPFW site so nothing to suggest otherwise

I posted a link to an article in the Express about them earlier today. That should explain a lot.

user888 · 16/07/2021 16:37

If it were a university other than Goldsmiths I would participate.

My opinion of Goldsmiths was already low

I don't know anything about Goldsmiths, but am now curious. Can someone explain?

@ahagwearsapointybonnet

The tweet with the survey seems to have been taken down now! Maybe they saw the feedback Grin
Maybe they didn't want the wrong sort of people answering...
Megasausagehead · 16/07/2021 16:36

Oops

I agree about the weird darning questions being a measure of conservatism, and I could forgive those. I suppose the general questions about rehabilitation etc could also be a measure of views.

Fairly obvious the scenario changes are about how degree of transition / severity of offence impact peoples views about putting men in women's prisons.

Unless anyone else had a completely different backstory (Robin liked stereotypically "girly" things, unsupportive parents) then that scenario was hardly presented neutrally, which it should have been.

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/07/2021 15:52

It may not be poorly constructed.

The questions about conservatism will just be a bought test of values, verified and probably American. It isn't on to design, test and verify a psychometric test of your own for every study. There's no point.

Robin's scenario changes every time so they are probably testing something more subtle. Often Psychology tests look stupid because they aren't testing what you think they're testing.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 16/07/2021 15:43

That survey was utterly bizarre Hmm

The quote from a PP described it well

"Here's the story of poor, poor Robin now let's subtly discover if you're a religious fanatic or a time traveller from 1840 so we can write off your opinion that prisons should be single sex."

My Robin was on hormones and physically assaulted a woman.

Incredibly badly constructed survey - far too much room for different interpretations of the questions asked. As someone already said O think extensive rehabilitation should be able to all prisoners, not just Robin, so all of the questions along those lines don't give any info on what people think about Robin in general. There is no way to find out if people think Robin should be treated better / worse / the same as other prisoners.

Dryadia · 16/07/2021 15:23

Oh and the statement I had was an physical attack on a female at a party, nothing sexual mentioned.

Dryadia · 16/07/2021 15:21

Had to read the statement a few times, but given it says "awaiting sentence" to me indicates found guilty, even if it doesn't specify the actual crime, it was at least a physical attack. Based all my answers off that.

GreenWhiteViolet · 16/07/2021 14:52

Mine said that Robin had had surgery, so no longer had male genitals, but was being sentenced for a sexual assault on his flatmate. I said that he shouldn't be in a women's prison. I think, as others suspected, that the nature of the crime and how far into 'transition' he is are the variables. For lots of the other questions, though, the real answer is that I'd need much more information about the case to say.

Likewise with the measures of conservativism. I think everyone should hold open doors, anyone who wants to can darn socks, and it's none of my business if someone's a virgin when they marry or not. Lots of 'neither agree nor disagree' with varying explanations behind the choice!

Imnobody4 · 16/07/2021 14:25

Very bizarre. I had to put neutral answers because there was no info to base an opinion on, but now I'm thinking how that will be interpreted.

Megasausagehead · 16/07/2021 14:21

Might get the ex to take it up, I cba

Floisme · 16/07/2021 14:20

I don't darn but I plan to learn and I regret making fun of my mum for doing it - not just with socks but any knitwear. It's not only the skill itself - undervalued as it is - I think it taps into the philosophy of buying the best you can and making it last as long as you can, and if there are right wing Christian women still doing it then good for them.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 16/07/2021 14:14

I read it as he had been convicted since he was awaiting the sentence and you don't do that until being found guilty so I answered accordingly.

The pre-marital virginity one was odd, I had to put neutral because regardless of what they were trying to ascertain I don't give a damn if someone wants or doesn't want to wait until marriage to have sex.

InspiralCoalescenceRingdown · 16/07/2021 13:28

@OldCrone that's the one I had. I found it really weird that they skipped straight from the accusation to the sentencing. Like they wanted to gloss over the crime.

That was a really weird survey.

Ladies, gentlemen, darning socks, locomotives?!

I couldn't really answer the questions about Robin as it just said he'd been accused of an assault. So like pps I had to put neutral answers on a lot of the prison/punishment questions.

HavelockVetinari · 16/07/2021 12:52

@allmywhat

Also the sock darning! I had no idea how to answer that since in truth I think it is ridiculous for anyone to darn socks in a world where you can buy five pairs for two pounds. Has sock darning become cool among time-rich green crunchy types? Am I going to feel guilty for not darning my socks two years from now? But they always get eaten by the washing machine long before they reach darning stage!
Indeed, and should you actually ever need to darn them, you will get itchy feet from the weird criss-cross patches!

HavelockVetinari · 16/07/2021 12:51

It's a bit of a weird study, the scenario isn't clear whether the person had committed a crime or not, so all the follow up questions about whether they should go to prison are a tricky to answer - is the person guilty or not?

I hadn't done the survey when I posted but will give it a go this afternoon

It’s practically illiterate in some places. I completed it, but had to put “neutral” or “neither agree nor disagree” on all the questions that made no sense, like the question on how severely the non-convicted offender, whose crime we don’t even know the details of, should be punished.
