In yesterday's Times, in response to the judgemental statements made by certain male commentators about Emma Raducanu:

"Middle-aged men should generally avoid commenting on the physical or mental well-being of teenage girls. They will never experience or fully understand that world."

Nonsense. What if it was a female commentator and a teenage boy?

They'd never comment like that. Sexism.

Buffoonborisisatwat · 12/09/2021 01:15

@lolacola77

Nonsense. What if it was a female commentator and a teenage boy? I'm no fan of McEnroe but he was right. She's clearly not ready to compete at that level. I personally think she's a flash in the pan and we'll probably never hear of her again. Apart from reality shows.
Well you got that wrong 🤣
LobsterNapkin · 12/09/2021 01:06

I don't agree with the idea that men, of whatever age, have no clue what teenage girls are like.

I have three girls. My husband has a much better sense of the mental make-up of the younger one than I do, having a similar personality. I expect he could make some fairly reasonable assessments about a teenage girl he met, having raised three of his own, and being reasonably observant. I think many women could do the same with regards to teenage boys.

McEnroe's main issue is that he is and always has been inclined to be a twat, and spout off about things he doesn't really have much information about. On the other hand, you can probably make a general statement that elite sports including tennis are an extremely high pressure environment that is going to be hard on almost any teen, and maybe especially teen girls.

So pleased for Emma, what a superstar! Please can the women on FWR flood the Sports Personality Of The Year phone lines in December, and make sure Emma wins this year. Last time we had a female winner was, I think, the wonderful Dame Kelly Holmes in 2004. We are long overdue another female winner.

@lolacola77, care to review those thoughts?
Casmama · 12/09/2021 00:51

Maybe we could just be delighted for Emma's success and resist crowing about someone's inappropriate comment and a whole thread mocking the poster who made it?

larkstar · 12/09/2021 00:49

I think @lolacola77 is ""a flash in the pan and we'll probably never hear of her again."

AdoptedBumpkin · 12/09/2021 00:44

@Lalliella

Morgan and McEnroe are twats.

@lolacola77 do you prefer cream or custard with your humble pie?

😂

This post aged well Grin
FannyCann · 12/09/2021 00:38

Fabulous performance. She's a star act in every way, on court, in interviews, her acceptance speech (and Laylah Fernandez' speech as well) could teach a few Oscar winners a thing or two. And great A level results also.
I think we'll be hearing a lot more of her for many years to come and I highly doubt she'll ever need to lower herself to a reality show.

@lolacola77 Grin

namechange786578 · 12/09/2021 00:26

Huge congratulations to the flash in the pan this evening, I've already forgotten her name obviously.

Melroses · 12/09/2021 00:26

That was amazing Grin

RedDogsBeg · 12/09/2021 00:24

Do you think lolacola77 would like something to wash those words down, like a can of Coke maybe?Grin.

Some people can't abide successful young woman and must denigrate them at every opportunity.

Well done to Emma Radacanu, a truly class act and what a wonderful achievement.

tunnocksreturns2019 · 12/09/2021 00:23

Ooh I would LOVE to be a 100th of this sort of a flash in the pan Grin incredible

Heidi1982 · 12/09/2021 00:13

I was wondering what was better, getting a cheque for 2.5million or a trophy from Billy Jean King. Amazing.

HopeClearwater · 12/09/2021 00:07

If she never won another tennis match in the rest of her life she’s still written tennis history and taken home 2.5m dollars … reality shows indeed!!!

HopeClearwater · 12/09/2021 00:05

@lolacola77 haha
@JMcEnroe hahahaha
@Judy Murray, Billie-Jean King and Virginia Wade - carry on being the brilliant women you are

Congratulations to Emma. She was amazing!

Ha ha ha ha. Emma is fab. She's just won 2.5million. Flash in the pan, my arse. Judy Murray is fab too. McEnroe was being an arse and I hope he apologises.
nettie434 · 11/09/2021 23:57

^Are you sure, I thought Boris Becker did that.
Happy to stand corrected though?^

I think he was unseeded rather than having to go through the qualifiers. I wouldn't have known this but the commentators have been talking about how Emma is 1st person to have won this way.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 11/09/2021 23:39

So thrilled for her!

FannyCann · 10/09/2021 14:01

She's done fantastically and obtained stellar results in her A levels too, A* maths is not to be sniffed at. She conducts herself beautifully and is a joy to watch.

Thanks for reviving the thread. Grin

mytortoiseisill · 10/09/2021 13:30

Emma has inspired my son who has suffered from anxiety this summer.

She has helped him see that anxiety can be just a part - hopefully not the biggest -of his story.

So thanks Emma x
