Such an inspirational story.

Started archery at the age of 37. Is representing Canada in the Olympics in Archery at the age of 42. How lucky that Stephanie just happens to have an Olympic level talent for archery. I wonder what it is that sets this athlete apart from the much younger women in the category, apart from their height?

@TheLovleyChebbyMcGee

Oh right, well it doesn't change what I said before, best of luck to her!
It changes everything, you just want to keep living in your bubble.

I actually live in Canada and near where this person is from. I had never heard of this athlete until I read this on mumsnet. Probably most people here don't know anything about this, tbh. And if they did, well, Canadians are the most complacent people in existence so there's not much hope of outrage over women losing out....

Thanks Betty for the info. I'll send a consolation card.

'But we still don’t know how Barrett got from club competitions for fun to, well, this (the Olympics.'

I feel that comparatively few other people would find this at all perplexing.

(And, yes, I feel the rage - not only for this but for the brazen nature of the gaslighting by what should be a reputable media outlet.)

I’ll tell them.

They got there because they couldn’t cut it competing against their peers and CHOSE to compete against people who have a physical disadvantage.

That is how you get from ‘for fun’ to the Lympics.

If your reporters can’t figure that out or you are not willing to print it then that is on you.

@EmbarrassingAdmissions

Glinner has the story from ripixitnutmeg

Olympics

That Toronto Star article is giving me the rage. 'But we still don’t know how Barrett got from club competitions for fun to, well, this (the Olympics.'

Fuck off, you lying, dissembling bastards. FUCK OFF!!

Truthlikeness · 11/07/2021 19:02

I'm not particularly into watching sport - I'd much rather play it myself - but I've always really loved the Olympics and always got into watching and supporting all the diverse sports. I remember standing at a bus stop, repeatedly refreshing my phone as Nick Skelton was in the jump-off at Rio, eventually winning the gold, trying to hide my tears of joy so the other commuters didn't think I was a bit strange. Grin.

The IOC letting men compete against women has completely ruined the Olympics for me - all of it, not just the most obviously ruined sports. It's a complete travesty and I don't think I can watch any of it this year.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 11/07/2021 15:44

Sold.

We can go into drinky mode.

I’m only in it about once a year/when I feel like it, but that seems to work for some… Wink

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 11/07/2021 13:57

Room for a fat womanly arse alongside betty ?

It is the only part I worry about. Thankfully I don’t have a neck the same width as one of my fat thighs.

I don't know full details but here in the UK funding, not just of an individual athlete but also of a sport on the whole, is linked to results so if a UK women is bumped from say 12th to 13th because a TW finishes in say 9th she could have her funding reduced or even removed and other women in that sport could also have their funding reduced/removed so it can be targeted elsewhere. It's so not just about medals.

It is a shame that nobody cares about the hurtyfeeleys caused by that eh?

It's only women though so who cares ehhh? Hmm

@FannyCann yes MNHQ removed my message to you. I have an image of it....

Maybe it was because it looked like I was trying to spam and start campaign to send cards to the IOC... I've emailed them to ask why it was deleted.

I'm not trying to start a campaign - it was a vague idea and something I'm going to do.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 11/07/2021 12:51

It is a bit like A Few Good Men betty

Except there is no ‘good’ about it.

And they can’t handle the truth…

FannyCann · 11/07/2021 12:50

And the one you agreed with.
