Apologies if this is already a thread…
Anyone seen the amendment relating to sex offenders changing aspects of their identity?

Thoughts?

@Imnobody4

Yes it's a promising move, but I'm a bit bemused by the names attached, it includes Caroline Noakes and Maria Miller.
Do you think there is a chance these women have been paying lip service to TWAW, but when it comes to the crunch and actual legislation they're not quite as without understanding as they seemed?

Wouldn't be entirely surprised. Tgese are ambitious politicians, they're not in it for a deep commitment to LGBTQI rights.

It doesn’t say they have to consult with victims of sexual crimes or any of the major women’s charities, so that’s a shame.

Interesting. Because as I think we know from correspondence with the DBS, essentially they take it on trust whether you disclose previous names or not.

Lets hope this is good news.

I can't eyeroll hard enough at this, its what us 'purported feminists' have been saying for years.
There are currently loopholes in safeguarding big enough for convicted sex offenders to stroll through, because these women pushed 'acceptance without exception' and called us bad names.

Me too. Makes me think what's the catch here?

Being generous to them perhaps they've realised it helps nobody if there's constantly media headlines about sex offenders who have adopted new identities, some of them post arrest.

It does rather fly in the face of 'no reported issues with Self ID' though.

It's interesting given the outcome of the JR today.

Taken from that thread Data shows a prevalence of sexual offending by the known transgender prison population of over 50% compared to a prevalence of around 18% in male prisons generally and around 4% in female prisons generally.

Both self ID and the GRC process allow for a change in identity, the current process doesn't prevent someone with a criminal record for sexual offending obtaining a GRC. How's Maria Miller going to square that circle?

Promising?

ArabellaScott · 02/07/2021 10:41

Hadn't seen. That sounds like a sensible first step. I'm staggered at how this loophole was created with apparently no consideration of the bleeding obvious.
